Overly sensitive much?

@longtry If you want to go with a 'small nation' feel Karigor Island is probably something you could go with.

Hey, before this thread I barely know about the lore, but after these comments I feel I've learnt a bunch! Moreover, now I know what some of your desire/preference is. @zydar & @LordInsane both plan for a new faction from Jadame, but while zydar kind of wanting the whole continent('s creatures), LI focus on a race & a town named Kontor, which emphasizes trade. @verriker has some very interesting observations & ideas, which I'll cover far down.

LordInsane said:
I firmly disagree on what you define as quality contents. While this site by its nature is Heroes of Might and Magic focused, the original RPG series is still part of Might and Magic, and there too were fine games set in the setting. And is not the biographies of the heroes part of the appeal of Heroes 3?
I don't think I fully understand what you wrote. Of course M&M are fine games, I don't discredit that lineage. For the question, as player, I find little interest in hero bio. Partly because of the tavern interface. We can only read one's bio after hiring them. Before that, right-clicking on those 2 options would only bring up the stats & skills.

We need to keep in mind that different players have different tastes. However, H3 is a TBS game, and I'm 100% sure that the vast majority of its players value the quality of a faction: its town buildings, its heroes abilities, its troops strength... over its history. Proofs for that are all over the place: when we think of Conflux, for example, everyone knows it's the town with those fricking Phoenixes, or with that hero Lunatic firewall, but barely anyone knows what country it's from? Or on this community, most threads regarding HotA discuss how balanced or not Cove is / how pirates are OP, not about the awesomeness of the campaign & its ultimate artifact Horn, or applaud the lore-friendly Satyr.

What I want to say is, we need to know where we should focus on & pay less attention to things that deserve less.

verriker said:
worth pointing that an important part of the spirit is in the lore though, when one looks as the Fortress you can know it is in Tatalia and has a history and authenticity developed by NWC which gives it texture, while if you were to bring Zerg Town or something which makes no sense in the NWC world then it will not feel as authentic to the original spirit as e.g. Tularea or Vori or Phynaxia or Karigor or Welnin or Bracaduun or Jadame or whatelse would lol

That's actually my point too I want to find something that's definitely not Zerg & can fit the description. But other than that, as I said regarding LI's comment just above, while the lore is important, it's not THE MOST important thing. We may as well step in the route HotA has been on, that is to create new content with a measure of liberty in it. As long as our content has both quality & the spirit, it will become the lore, like what we're treating HotA content.

Quote:
to get back on the topic it's fairly difficult to come up with authentic races and monsters for a whole new town because Might and Magic is very big on classical and pop culture monsters but also used up many of them

Yep, what you said, unfortunately, is true. After all, we'd only know about this lore or that monster if it appears in the game, and that very fact means the game has already used it. That's the reason why even HotA didn't come up with many new ones. The Ayssid resemble Rocs, the Nix looks like a buffed Lizardman and the Haspid feels a lot similar to Hydras. But I don't worry too much because M&M world is a big place. The entire continent of Jadame is barely explored, and who knows what lurks there? Just let your imagination loose, and as I said, if our creation got the spirit, it will be accepted.

What I don't consider "having spirit" is, (not) surprisingly, HotA's upcoming town Factory. Of course, not the entire idea, but to be precise, the 6th unit. A human with a longcoat & cowboy hat & shotgun?? It screams Western bullets & XX century films. There's nothing Might nor Magic with that kind of concept. Also, I don't think 'steampunk techs' sits well with the M&M spirit, either. The more techs we discover, the less Magic things are. The more techs we employ, the less Might is needed. Techs will kill M&M. That's the reason I think the next HotA release will be a failure, or at least, wildly not successful as the Cove one.

I am sorry there mate but for a single image, full world map I would be 'avin a laff with you as there are simply not enough facts available to construct one without making some **** up, however if a gun to my head I prefer the map of Katarn from an informative viewpoint as it succeeds in making much less **** up than the very pretty attractive one lol

http://www.gildia.acidcave.net/sphinx/enroth_world_fan2.jpg

what you must completely ignore to have the facts is shape of Karigor, shape of north, east and west Jadame, distance between all continents and freestanding islands as that is just an approximation, relative size of the continents which is also somewhat dodgy or unclear, some of the positioning, and pretty much the entire ocean as we have very little idea what is in the ocean and also where (who says that the southwest area is empty not me, there can even be more continents such as The Price of Loyalty depending on someone's opinion) lol

alternatively for lore friendly just forget all about fool's errand of world map and check the official maps for each continent at Demilich or Acidcave lol

if you would force me to expand the world I would probably add/make up many islands and another obscure continent or two but it would not exactly be this "East Jadame", I also have the opinion that Jadame is bigger and less unconvincingly shaped than the Katarn version with more regions but not that massive sprawl of the Markon one either where you cannot miss it, something between two extremes where it is still an obscure and distant frontier would be good lol

for me if I get a bit analytical about Cove (which I do not like to as it is gorgeous and excellent but anyway) it is a bit weird design-wise or perhaps shows the spontaneous fannish origins as there are many more NWC creatures suitable for a Regnan Pirate town who are not actually in this one, such as the Wererat, Triton, Mermaid, Siren and Dragon Turtle, who could join with the Pirate and Sea Serpent to have a lively lineup without needing the parade of samey humans or making up a new bird or lizard what have you lol

a matter about Cove is that it's basically a human town bar one or two heroes but this was not the NWC approach for any towns outside of the default ass Castle, on paper every other town has at least three races so Regna can also have Wererats and Tritons as the heroes to flesh it out and build on their lore of MM8, that is all less imaginative one may say because it does not make random stuff up but in my mind's eye it would be a much livelier town and even optimises the source material too, so a closely attentive approach can be a win win lol

I will assume you know that sci-fi tech has been a fairly central part of Might and Magic lore from the beginning (if not I will suggest to research this just to be carefully informed),

however in terms of what gels or works with Heroes this one is certainly a matter of opinion which has gone down in the past when you look at Forge, for me I am not aware what is their HotA lore for the Factory, what kingdom it is supposed to be or how it makes sense in their heads so I cannot judge yet whether it is very authentic from that standpoint, but I do certainly like that it is something quite fresh to extend the game world with new influences,

yet in my perspective any higher tech towns such as Factory or Forge should be possible to bar from the game so that players (and importantly mapmakers) who disagree with it and prefer to inhabit the high fantasy/mythological version of the world can pretend it does not exist, if with Factory the goal is to integrate tech with the world in a way that all players must swallow it then I would not personally go for that as it is unlikely to satisfy the widest audience, but we must see how they handle it before passing comment lol

a strangest thing if anything is how a human wearing a coat would ever be level 6 as I do not personally see that, but I am not comfortable to be too hypercritical about it as it is still a very visually impressive town being donated to everybody for free, cheers lol

They are supposed to be located in Eofol after the invasion of the Kreegans ended. The line-up of HotA factory contains halflings which were the inhabitants of Eofol prior to the demonic invasion so the events probably start in Eofol or end there. The town landscape also looks barren like it was scorched by the fire for a long time.

@longtry, Karigor island seems to be mainly ruled by two big factions: The Church of the Sun (Light users) and the Church of the Moon (Shadow users, and might be different from death magic - Necromancy). Keep in mind that we already have a big number of new factions which are still in development, with emphasis on 'still in development', but I like to take them into consideration.

So we could use Grove for the Church of the Moon and Oasis or Bastion (or both) for Church of the Sun.

Of course, your imagination is the limit as in you can come up with a third underground faction or a nearby underwater faction (even if we already have one, Abyss).

There are also a lot of places on Antagarich which have not been used.

For example, the South-East island, Nighon, is home to the dungeon overlords and warlocks, but that is only in the underground and the island is pretty big. What lurks on the surface?

The lore can be molded as you wish since its development stopped not with the end of NWC/3do, but it stopped with The Sword of Frost (Heroes Chronicles) -> HoMM 4 when the world as we know it ended in 'a blinding flash'. Therefore, the story already has an ending: they all die because of two stupid leaders, Gelu and Kilgor, who tried sooo hard to avoid a prophecy (well, mostly Gelu as Kilgor was a brainless barbarian) that they themselves fulfilled it.

What you can do is to UNRAVEL pages of history that lead to the destruction of Enroth (which is called this way by the humans of the continent Enroth and therefore everybody calls it this way because we play the game from their perspective and the world is actually called C.O.L.O.N.Y. by the Ancients). The Ancients are a intergalactic race who seeded the planets with life via CORN and VARN spaceships. (Much like the Titans of World of Warcraft if anybody is a fan here)

Or you can come up with a post-apocalyptic story on the same Enroth about the habitants who found a way to survive with the help of magic or technology (*points at classic Forge*).

We also have other planets in the universe, e.g. Axeoth (the world where the evens of homm 4 happen, probably seeded by the Ancients as well) and you can find a story of a new faction which translocates from planet to planet.
We have two universes as well (the multiverse theory could be applied to the series): the universe of the games HoMM 1 - HoMM 4 + MM 1 - MM IX and the universe of the games HoMM 5 - 7 + MM X and you can borrow races like the dark elves and runic dwarves (if you really like them).

It is really up to you.

That's because Conflux does not originate from any country. It's made up of heroes from all responding to the call of the elements. It's an amalgamation of heroes from other factions.

It's appearance correlates with Heroes Chronicles: Master of the Elements I believe. Something to do with the Elemental Lords wanting to break outta their prison, and after they are quelled a call goes out for people to take up leadership of the elements to help keep balance. Something like that.

I believe all of the "I'll be offended on your behalf" spots are already taken on this message board.

Also, I didn't assume anything about the maker of this thread, just poked fun at his one statement, about Cove being a "H7 rip off".
So you assuming that the OP is "mentally impaired" is actually more offensive than my comment, and is the one deserving of a penalty if we go by your logic.

Now back to Tumblr you go, soyboy.

@Soyrikker: your posted map is also a fan interpretation, based on the name of the file. Thing with NWC is they never really put out a proper full official map, now did they? basic google search gives out most of the fan made stuff already posted here. cheers lol.

@OP: Dude, ideas are fine and dandy, but people here tend to be hostile towards plain text walls of new content proposals (now DJ Soyboy will jump on this and attack me again), so why don't you go work on it a bit more, and present at least some static images of  images for the nerds here to drool and argue over. would be much more entertaining. Because anyone can come up with text walls.

not to go all well ackshually without cause but I am afraid that COLONY name you gave out is just a made up name from the MM Tribute fan project, it is again a fake news and not an accurate or canon name of the planet (the planet is called Enroth) lol

not really Masters of the Elements was back in a historical past, you may have a half-remembered confusion of that with Might and Magic 8 around the same time of Armageddon's Blade where the elemental lords are in prison by Escaton but that is not necessarily here nor there, Conflux appearance in Armageddon's Blade is more of a plain and simple defence of the world lol

"Heroes from the Confluxes tell us the elemental gods have sent them to us, so together, we might destroy Lucifer Kreegan and his quest to set the world on fire."

"My conception of the Conflux was relatively straightforward. Conflux Heroes and the associated Elemental troops were defenders of the natural world. When there is a threat to its continued existence, they make their presence known, assert themselves, and attempt to eliminate the threat. They have no allegiance to anyone or anything, other than the preservation of the world. Anything beyond this was developed after I departed NWC."

@verriker, thanks for that info. I m missing a lot of information from the M&M games and it is probably 80-90% of the lore and i dont know exactly what is false or true.

Though you gotta admit that the term 'Enroth' is used because of the Enrothian Empire being the one who writes history in our area of action. The tatalians probably call the world otherwise in their folk stories, but they are not as evolved as the human/elven civilizations in order to document their folklore. The barbarians too and actually any almost primitive civilization.

Do you know where this piece of information can be found? Is there an in-game book, quest log or anything that lists the three continents on this planet? Im asking because i have not played the M&M games.

And I actually do not remember about the Eofol part. Let's just say that i speculate for now , but that would be awesome to bring back unfinished narrative threads. A lot could have happened in Eofol since the demons were overthrown until the end of the Sword of Frost.

How do you do that, Dj? I want to report, too, but there're no such buttons under any posts.

Regarding the arguments you're exchanging, IMHO forum trolls feed on responses and reactions, so the best way is to ignore them. Of course, there are times when it's hard to ignore, such as those huge unrelated green pictures there - they make the page increase in width, and to read the comments I have to scroll left & right continuously, which is annoying as hell. For that reason, @Kip, I have to ask you to refrain from posting such pics. A wall of text is still way better than those flooding images. If you can't resist the urge, then I suggest to post a link like @verriker does.

for H3 you will be better off integrating units from Jadame into existing towns like Dragon Hunter for Castle or Couatl to Fortress,
an only kingdom really unique enough for its own faction is the Dark Elves for a trade/merchant town as you have said but even that can be a bit tough to flesh out and tie together (it should be more than some halfway house of Rampart Cove and Dungeon), albeit for longtry's idea that would be a good candidate because if Dark Elves sail to the setting of Heroes 3 for any reason they will be persecuted and have no home base there for themselves, so it will be certainly a survival game lol
This is the paragraph that I'd been wanting to expand on cause it gave me such a wonderful idea, but I was a bit lazy yesterday. Today, equipped with those great maps you guys provided, I can create a lore that somewhat is able to bridge @zydar & @LI's ideas to the new town. Keep in mind that because my lore knowledge is limited, the following may contain heaps of errors. Therefore, all the places & hero names & things... are just placeholders and are subjected to change, based on your suggestions for correction.

HISTORY OF THE ACADEMIA
Not too long ago, in a rural province of Kontor, there was a young dark elf named Tani. S/He (we'll vote on the gender, for now I'll use he for short) was born on the day the great traveler Magelan set sail on an ambitious trip around the world by both routes East-West and North-South, visiting all 3 continents in 1 voyage for the 1st time. Growing up, Tani took Magelan as his idol and always wanted to follow his steps, or at least visit him. BTW, Magelan didn't return home, instead he chose to settle in Bracada, the end of his journey and found a league that is very successful and has since spread to every faction in Antagarich: the Mage Guild.

His kingdom of the dark elves now was in a golden age of trading, but it was pretty much limited within the continent, since the intercontinental merchandises were most often intercepted and lost by Regnan pirates. Determined not to let those most lucrative trades to get away from hands, its queen Lisabel announced all over the country, promising great prize for anyone who could come up with an effective measure. Tani, having lost his father and 2 uncles from 1 of those raids, also had been thinking for a way to prevent the Regnans for some time. He came up with many ideas, some good, a few bad, but nobody listened to his best one yet. Heard of the queen's open invitation, he realized this might be his chance to fulfill his childhood dream. Thus he traveled to Kontor for a pitch.

Before the regal yet graceful queen, Tani was in lost of words. Fortunately he regained his wit when asked about his goal for this venture, where he told her many things from Magelan to the pirates' nightmare: the convoy. Despite living in the palace most of her life, the queen was surprisingly adept at the trades of mercantile itself and other things. Luckily for Tani, he has some years of experience on a small merchant ship, thus not a total newbie. He proposed to bring an small armada to Antagarich and settle a base there. From that station, he'd organize monthly, or even biweekly convoys to Enroth as well as receive convoys from his homeland, so now individual ships wouldn't have to go alone into the vast ocean of unknown.

Although her advisors doubted the brand new concept of convoys and scorned the boldness of such a 'green child', Lisabel was persuaded by Tani's youthful passion. But still prudential, she put him on a quest to gather manpower and goods for what would be officially the 1st royal trade mission. Tani would have to prove himself capable of this preparation task before he can head for a new continent.

Thus began the 1st player campaign: The goods of a mission.
(to be continued)

Surprising that with such compelling lore, no one thought making some campaign or even map about, and that for 2 decades. Ok, there are original cd campaigns, but come on, fan mapmakers are light years ahead.

Years ago I wanted to make a MM6 (Enroth) replica in Homm3 but by that time the editor limits were 144x144 so I was not happy with minimap result

yet I managed to put the labyrinths from it quite well, but again,it asked for too much space compared to map max size.

But one thing is decisive today, there is enough material - creatures (about 2000) and dwellings (see the various graphics additions for Era) to complete such projects, towns, campaigns and maps.

Oh well, need two lives or more to do all what we would love to.

BTW, Magelan didn't return home, instead he chose to settle in Bracada, the end of his journey and found a league that is very successful and has since spread to every faction in Antagarich: the Mage Guild.

The Mage Guild is only the building. For example, for the wizards, the institute could be called Council/Committee/Convocation of Bracada. For the druidic elves, Circle of the Elders, for the tatalian witches, Sisterhood of the Swamps.

Or simply apply this formula: magic class name + faction name: the Druids of AvLee, the Wizards of Bracada, the Clerics of Erathia, but I don't find it correct to assume that the Mage Guild league is one and the same for all factions.

Btw, do we have anywhere in the M&M games such terms?

Surprising that with such compelling lore, no one thought making some campaign or even map about, and that for 2 decades. Ok, there are original cd campaigns, but come on, fan mapmakers are light years ahead.

That is because the map editor is primitive and single-use.
In order to represent a world you have to:
1. be able to connect more maps, like get from a map which represents a zone (like Tatalia region) to another without changing the game/match altogether and via an exit that leads directly to another area: East to Erathia, South to Krewlod etc. And you cant do this with our current map editor.
2. be able to place respawnable creatures, revisitable objects
3. online server that can host many users to roam throughout the map.

The way I see the current map editor, lorewise, it s only for a representation of a war, conflict or for the narration of an adventure (of a few heroes). Adding so many bits of lore information would be (doable, yes, but) pointless for the arc story in cause and too difficult. Could VCMI ever accomplish this?

Years ago I wanted to make a MM6 (Enroth) replica in Homm3 but by that time the editor limits were 144x144 so I was not happy with minimap result
Wait I'm confused. What's wrong with the minimap? It looks okay to me? Also isn't 144x144 a small map?

@longtry: If you want to go with Jadame/East Jadame you could add werewolves to the town lineup. Werebeasts have been a part of the lore for sometime, although only werewolves show up. And I think they originate from Jadame.

But you also said you wanted to go with a small nation feel. And Jadame isn't really "small" So I mean, Karigor I guess? Or Emerald Isle. You could base it out of Enroth if you really wanted to. That way you could be able to take creative liberties.

Well no, hope you are not as noob at Enroth map as you are with HoMM3 editor map sizes

After seeing the original, any attempt to translate that in the perfect Homm3 square is looking pathetic.

Honestly I haven't been on the editor in such a long time and I was too lazy to check.

But I see the problem now. HoMM3 maps are all perfectly square, so I can see how that would be hard to replicate.

now that maps are 244x244, I think it could be done reasonably by dividing the whole map in 7x2 squares (as in the image, use 7 for surface, the other 7 for underground and keep in shroud every other region while you visit the current one. So, while you never get to see the whole minimap, you still have in sight each map accurately.

That's a really good idea.

How would you keep each pocket in the shroud? Is that a setting you can do in the editor?
