New King’s Bounty 2 Sequel

Surprised no one else has posted about this here!

OMG this is such cool news. While Heroes of Might & Magic sits dead in the hands of Ubisoft (thank goodness for fan projects) at least 1C appears to be pushing on with the King's Bounty games. The new sequel looks pretty darn epic!!

After all the spin off games to King's Bounty the Legend remake they are finally doing an proper sequel. What's even more interesting is that they've gone in a very serious and high quality graphic direction too. I can see multiple gameplay and graphical influences from Mount & Blade and The Witcher 3. Very excited about this one!

EDIT: If this forum supports custom image resolutions let me know and I'll shrink these down, I tried a number of known combinations but they all failed eg..

I posted info about this in the games your looking forward to thread. Did you seriously thought I would miss news about such a big name in TBS genre?

That said for now I wait for more news. It doesn't quite captivate me yet. I mean, it does look nice, and there are fantasy elements in it (monsters), but I don't want a medieval tbs game with elements of fantasy. I want a fantasy TBS, and Kings Bounty games did quite a good job with capturing a flimsy, fairy tale like atmosphere. They are obviously taking inspiration from things like Witcher 3 or Spellforce 3, but I need more answers

PS: And yeah, seems the discussion intenisty on these forums doesn't exactly sprawl lately...

Blob basically nails my opinion on it so far. I’m excited to hear of sequel cause I love those games, but I need to see more. I’m already not crazy about having multiple units in one stack. That’s something I see in a lot of 4x games. I’ll keep my eye on it for sure. Hoping for the best!

haha opps sorry I don't think I've spent much time in that thread as it's size is intimating lol!

Hmm yeah I talked about this over at CH too but they probably felt a big change was needed as they kinda did the old formula to death haha. I mean think about it.. After releasing King's Bounty The Legend they did Armored Princess, Crossworlds, Warriors of the North, Ice & Fire, Dark Side, and the online KB Legions. Some of those were standalone sequel like releases and continued the cartoonish graphics and humour. If they'd just done that yet again I'm not sure if anyone outside of their core fan base would have noticed lol.

Whereas this very different looking sequel has already been covered on multiple large media sites and is getting some good attention and traction likely due to the new look. So if it plays well they just might have themselves another winner and an expanded fan base!

But yeah there's so little in the trailer in regards to other worlds/realms, races and fantasy units so hopefully more will be revealed soon. I was lurking around their new website and if you go to the 'Lore' and then 'Blight' section you can see background video that shows off some nice cursed undead video sequences not used in the trailer.

Yeah companies that make tbs games need to gain as much attention as possible to get this genre running. I recently noticed there's an influx of advertisment for this kind of games:

- AoW Planetfall has been advertised quite strongly, they make a lot of presentation videos/streams, and recently I've even seen Trumps sponsored video about the game
- Humankind from Amplitude had a lot of coverage during Gamescom. It's not exactly my type of game, but many people like Civilization style tbs games, and this one is shaping up to be one of the stronger competitors to it
- not exactly a tbs per se (rather Company of Heroes like game), but Iron Harvest is also getting some buzz
- multiple adaptations of board games, exact translations to the digital format or sth else entirely like for example Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon digital. And becasue board games are mostly tbs games it might lead to more popularity for the genre
- games like Dark Crystal Tactics or Gears of Wars Tactics

And there's ofc KB2, which might attract people with its more "mature" atmosphere...

Something stirs in the firmament, hopefully this leads to more investments from bigger companies. One way or another we might even see something related HoMM (hopefully not from Ubisoft, but perspective of $ might make them remember about it)...

Oh wow! thank you for mentioning Humankind. That's freaky to see Amplitude doing a Civ game. They've done Master of Orion and Master of Magic so I guess why not do Civ. Hope they do Colonization one day too haha!

I'll just give my unasked for, unknowledgeable opinion on this game just because...

TBS games and extremely good graphics don't get along with each other. I have no idea what KB is, never played it, never watched it being played, but since it is a TBS game it will fail just like H5 did... almost...

I know that my opinion is based only on instinct but lately I have had good instincts

Except that H5 didn't really fail in the end and KB had gorgeous (if cartoonish) graphics and was a massive success.

yes, it failed. Any innovation is supposed to be better than the predecessors, but since H5 has been unable to surpass the best in the series it means that it's failed. And we all know that graphics are one of the reasons it has failed.

Regarding KB... I have no idea how big of a success it's been cause I've never played it, but based on my assumption that strategy and amazing graphics don't go well together I predict KB 2 to be crap. I just hope any of you who defend it before even playing it will have the courage to come back here and tell me I was right... IF I'm right, that is. Otherwise, I apologize here and now, in advance, for my wrong intuition

HoMM V failed catastrophically at the very beginning and left many people with such a bad taste in their mouths that when TotE came out - admittedly a great expansion which fixed quite a few of the original's (it's suckish first expansion) problems and introduced a lot of new stuff at the same time - the audience was largely tired of the whole thing. In this sense you could say that the whole game failed, but not in general.

This new King's Bounty seems to be conceptually closer to Caneghem's game than to The Legend and that's fine with me, even though I like the latter a lot. Graphics take the back seat with this kind of games as usual, as long as it doesn't look completely ridiculous - and this screenshots certainly don't.

Well it depends what your criteria is for failure lol.

If you think HoMM5 failed because it didn't meet the expectations of you and some others then yeah sure it failed in that sense haha but it doesn't mean the game itself was actually a failure. You're just stating that YOU and some other people didn't like it.

It made money, plenty of people DID like it and in the grand scheme of things that's all that matters (to game companies) so it was a success.

Now HoMM6 and 7 you can say were actual failures because regardless of what you, I and others think of them personally as they did not make enough money and flopped. So regardless of how many people liked or didn't like them they absolutely failed.

you do realize that we are talking success from a customer's point of view, not from a gaming company's. If we were to judge by the book, and in favor of the companies then turning even a $1 profit off selling a game you've made then that can be considered success.

Also, I agree that H5 has not been a total failure (the skills system for example is a good thing, which I really like... also, the alternative upgrades), but overall H5 is worse than H3 (which is the reference point in the HoMM franchise), and since it couldn't overshadow H3... well, it's a failure

Imo, the main issue with H5 is that the thing looks like freaking Warcraft. Game mechanics were build upon H3 and extended but the original atmosphere and overall spirit of the game was lost.

H5 failed to satisfy customers? Lol. Maybe in its crappy release, it so happens to be in the top two spots of the series and it's hard to tell if H3 is first or second.

Heroes V is still considered one of the best entries in the series, I've seen many people on forums mentioning it as being close, or even on par with Heroes 3 in their book. I'm somewhere in the middle, I still consider it being Ubis best attempt on making a sequel, and although I enjoyed it (despite the idiotic initiative system), but after all those years the game still fails to actually bring me back to it.

When we look from a financial standpoint at least Heroes 5 made some money. Other two did not from what I know, but the games were severly underbudgeted (and unfinished in consequence when you look at it) either way so Ubisoft didn't probably loose that much. For them it was just one flop in their business, but due to lack of perspectives at that time (or willingness to take more risk, we are talking about a business afterall) they simply put it into the freezer...

That's why I'm mentioning the rise (or at least it looks that way) of TBS games as a good sign. They might consider returning back to the genre, and potential success of KB2 might lead them to consider it as those are very similar games in their overall premise... Ubisoft has the power to do this properly, with all their marketing and financial power. They just need a good reason to invest in it.

A simple idea to make Heroes a possible success? Give it strong modding support. Example: if the game would be around when autochess is still strong, like Warcraft 3 back in its days it could be used to build new games in games...

I think H3 is the most popular, followed by H5.

Blob, H6 is hated by most but sold well, but that is due to its predecessor's success. H7 was a disaster for basically being H6 2.0.

Yet its sales didn't influence them enough to not make 7 severly underbudgeted...

That's not hard at all, Heroes III is a clear winner simply because it's more playable and moddable. Heroes V doesn't even have a functional RMG and map editor...

Also simpler and more dated. Otherwise ofc H3 is a more complete product. As for modding, there's H5.5 that has managed to produce some spectacular things..
