The heroes will all be at least expert combat by the time you buy the dragon, making them hard to kill by a single dragon.

Anyway, I like hydras more which is why I always choose them over dragons even if it doesn't makes sense to get them. Actually, against Order I, too, pick dragons because Order's spells and creatures are nasty as phuck. But against all other factions hydras are the way to go for me.

Hydra is a much more bother job. You need Nature and Death spells also Tactics. Ranger is much comfortable, so you search for martial artifacts to get 50% attack and defense, for example. Asylum doesn't need Death Knight, it takes experience points. A two heroes are enough already. Black Dragons you need Chaos skill. This way Tactics-Combat-Chaos (Fireguard or Pyromancer) and Combat-Scouting-Chaos (Ranger or Fireguard) is right theory. If you take a Nature and Death, it's more expensive and demanding work. Ok didn't you want to Chaos? Asylum campaign, brother slipped away with Nature spell. Is it a coincidence? Ok if you get a Order, so it belong to Sorcerer, not Thief. Sorcerer can use a Hydra. Then Combat-Chaos-Order etc What about Noble? WoW campaign. I don't know which one is a Black Dragon or a Hydra. I think Hydra. But you can buy a Mega Dragon. One Mega Dragon pays 1000 gold. Noble is rarity. It fits Thief, Death Knight or buy a Lord is much better solution. If I'm not Asylum team, I build to Minotaur and Hydra for you Because Heroes 4 is a very deep and hard than easy Heroes 3. Hydra isn't bad. If you replace with Bandits. So Hydra-Orc-Hero-Medusa-?-Hero-Black Dragon is also good. Remember Haste and Confusion spell.

Chaos and only Chaos. Spells and creatures are to my taste, and the Thief hero is one of the most interesting to play with.

@Ghost... why do you need Chaos for Black Dragons? Also, I agree that Hydrae require more work (as you put it) in order to matter, but since H4 is already intended to be played with 2+ heroes in the same army you basically need 2 turns to buff the hydrae good enough to withstand / take down black dragons. 2 heroes both casting twice (first strike is a must, giant strength, slayer and stone skin/bloodlust) is enough to bring the hydrae on par with the dragons. The problem is... the enemy heroes might dispel the buffs

Dispel like Teleport. If you think Order skill is benefit. Then Ring of Permanency may be difficult to find. And your spell system is a good. Ok I use a immune, when I protect against magic, etc I use a Mass Confusion and Black Dragons to beat enemy. Simple is the key to victory. So you use a Sorcerer and Archer or Druid. If you want to get a Nature. You can understand strategy.

If you have expert combat I would probably have expert magic skill and an edge in spells over your heroes. While the hydras get to me I might slow them down or anything untill my blackies provide range defense against your heroes.
This is a never ending discussion, it's not that I don't agree with the points you make but there are ways to counter (almost) everything in the game.
That is why I love it.

@Ghost... yeah, Mass Confusion is a good spell. Now I know why you go for Chaos... and I (finally) understand a point you're making

@TheUnknown... fair points. Consider this discussion closed

in HoMM3, 30% bonus from logistics is considered one of the strongest skills.

In HoMM4, you get 50% with a pathfinding bonus on top of that.

Ergo, you really, really need someone with scouting specs from the scratch. The mobility bonus is just absurdly good.

In HOMM4 movement is not as important because of caravans. In H3 your heroes need to move so you can recruit.

Without a doubt, Caravans are really strong buildings in H4.

But they won't get your units or main armies to locations where you haven't been.

Although it would be quite convenient to be able to caravan your units to the front door of the enemy's town
