I dont think it’s that simple. Are you suggesting that cows, lambs, fish, chicken, etc. all have weaker immune systems over every single virus out there? Each metabolism is stronger or weaker against different types of virus and sometimes they mutate and evolve into a completely new type.

Yeah it just depends on the particular immune system with the particular disease.

When a disease jumps species, the new species usually doesn't have resistance to it. It goes both ways, animals to humans or humans to animals.

I suggest that each species is a carrier of virusses and bacteria, and the better the immune system of a species is, the more generally dangerous stuff they can carry (without becoming victims themselves). Sure, there are other considerations, apart from those little buggers to keep in mind, for example parasites, but in general it would seem to be a good policy to keep a safe distance, not let yourself bite and avoid that stuff on the menu.

I've never had bat before and I feel like I'm missing out. We used to have bats in our attic when a window broke and a few found their way into the main house so I had to beat them with a broom to stun them. I never killed them because they were too cute once you get a close look at them. They only look ominous from a distance.

Animals which I have eaten (in addition to the standard ones):

Boar
Buffalo/bison
Elk
Snake
Turtle
Alligator
Rabbit
Eel
Frog
Bear
Goose
Kangaroo
Squirrel

To my knowledge I've never eaten horse or snail.

As far as safety with mammals: cook the food. Easy.

You didn’t!

Btw, cooking doesnt always work, think of Mad Cow disease.

@JJ

Here’s the thing, if it’s a culture that’s been eating bats for centuries, they are probably already immune at this point. Think of how Europeans were immune to so many diseases because of their domesticated animals, the generations that invaded the Americas were already descendants of survivors. Yet the Native Americans dropped like flies to these unfamiliar diseases in massive numbers.

Yeah Mad Cow is scary.

People became picky with a small list of edible animals relatively recently in human history. Pretty much everywhere (including Europe) people trapped and shot and speared almost anything, although wild hoofed animals were the most popular because of how much meat you get. Bat can be a lot of work for a tiny meal, but in some areas they're a lot bigger and worth the effort so people hunt them.

It all tastes 90% the same. Kangaroo isn't much different from venison.

Some of my students have been telling me everything from libraries to gyms are getting shut down in a lot of places, even in cities like Guangzhou outside of the immediate danger zone.

This is why I don't want to live somewhere too congested. Too many damn variables.
