Misjudging Heroes IV?

I've read and reread all sorts of arguments from people whose opinions I respect at this forum.  I've heard all the arguments both for and against Heroes IV.  I myself don't own a copy, but I think it is folly to compare this game to HOMM III. I think a different standard needs to be applied to the game.

It should not be compared to Heroes III, but to Heroes I.
This may sound strange but think about it honestly.  NWC in my opinion took the Heroes engine to its max and now has had to start over.  Sure they could've kept the same old thing going and added even more structures, creatures, heroes, and artifacts.  But they took a right turn and have tried something entirely new.

Even the most ardent supporters of the game will admit that the heroes in combat are unbalanced.  They are too weak in the beginning and WAY too strong towards the end.  Well, I'm thinking of this game not as an extension of HOMM III, but a beta of HOMM V and possibly VI.

Heroes I kind of sucked as does this game.  But something 'magical' happened with HOMM II.  I don't know if NWC was visited by a muse or what, but they got it right.

So, enjoy this flawed game for what it is, and understand that it is laying the groundwork for something truly incredible.

I REALLLLY like Heroes 4. I think it is almost perfect... (muhahaa, ofcource it isn`t, but still...), but when I think of old Heroes 1-3, I`ll have to say that Heroes II POL is the best one. It`s really like a good illustrated fairy-tale or fantasy book.

I've been there since 1 (never played king's bounty though), and I definitely like this game better than all of them... EXCEPT for the bugs.  If they fix the AI, it will truly be a great game.  I just don't see any other way to look at it.  Different from 3?  God, I sure hope so!  3 was such a regurgitation of two that it wasn't even funny!  I liked 3, so don't get me wrong, but it definitely needed a major change.

Yeah I like HoMM IV but the AI sucks and the memory leak p***es me off. Also the artwork of creatures is a bit childish. But heroes in the battle is the best thing for me.

Get the patch... makes the AI a little better, and the combat grid & shadow are VERY helpful!

Then why are you even commenting? An opinion based solely on what others have said doesn't hold any value. You have to play for yourself not listen to some jackass who flamed the game.

Combat unbalanced? Heroes too powerful? UMM heroes are MEANT to be powerful in case you didn't know and they die so easily in the beginning it only makes sense they become good later on. And even then they can be beaten. Its all about heroes now; creatures are less important and I like that.

WOW! Your powers of deduction are unmatched! Of COURSE its not an extension of heroes III, 3DO said it from day one.
Beta? Umm right whayever.

Why don't you go and do something constructive? Like banging your head on the wall really hard.

I am really sick of people putting this game down ESPECIALLY when they 'don't own a copy' and their opinion is solely derived from others. Get a motherf#cking clue please.

Heh, yes, that is a good point.  I hadn't noticed that he said he didn't own a copy.  Oh well, as they say, it takes all kinds...

I have only heroes IV on my system and no more Heroes III.

Heroes III look very basic compared to the quality and complexity of Heroes IV.

Heroes III was good at its time but now we must make way for the successor.

Embrace the gaming pleasure of heroes IV

A new generation of heroes.

The graphics in HOMM3 are easier on the eyes but HOMM4 is a better game, it will take some getting use to though!
I'm still getting my arse kicked on the advanced level lol!
Still used to running around in HOMM3 and kicking everythings arse on the top level heh heh.
Let's face it they are completely different games and I'm glad. Who wants another carry on from HOMM2 and 3 it needed an overhaul and I think they have done a good job.
Multiplayer would be nice though, in my opinion single player games are boring and hotseat games are a pain in the butt!

To bring the game out without multiplayer was an outrage!!

I think Gootch makes an interesting point.

My first Heroes game was II, so when I bought HOMMI to see where this game came from, I was thoroughly disappointed, but could see that the foundation for HOMMII was laid here.

I must agree...

with Gootch here...

I came to same conclusion even before I tried the game from all the info and opinions I had read about it.

When I played it myself I would say that I wasn't surprised.
It's totally new game and I can see is as start for new series that is based into different issues than previous HoMMs.

As "veteran" of HoMM series I would say that the game lacks the atmosphere that earlier games had and also the things what made the game perfect.
In HoMM3 everything happened so naturally and you knew what to do and you saw all the possibilities intuitively. HoMMIV is much more complex having lot of new things like potions etc. but at the sametime something is missing...
Also I don't approve the new isometric view. All the units and stuff are really small and are hard to notice from background whatever the resolution.

I'm not saying that HoMMIV is bad game but it surely is different and cannot be really compared to HoMM3. I can only compare my experiences and I would say that I like the system of HoMM3 more. I would have expectated some changes to HoMM3 engine and something new units, options and stuff. However this wasn't the case and like I kinda feared they changed the game too much.

In overall HoMMIV is average game in my opinion. There aren't so many flaws unless we count AI as one but I would say that I just don't enjoy it as much as other HoMMs.

I believe many veterans feel this way. Something is missing from HoMMIV. Maybe it's "strategy" or "atmosphere" or something else but the game doesn't inspire me continue to play as those previous versions did.

I'm almost sorry I feel this way as I have enjoyed the gaming series and I try to enjoy HoMMIV too...but something is just not there. The first three HoMMs were magical, but HoMMIV isn't. Maybe HoMMV is.

It's almost a little unsettling when I hear people talking about H5. It almost seems like 3Do or NWO or whoever, can do no wrong. Like, is everybody just going to run right out and pick it up?
I waited and I'm glad. It sounds like the patch has made improvements but that's no excuse.
I guess I'll do like some other games that felt so, so about and wait 'till I find it for $20-$25.
But then again it's like some you said. I may pick it up and be totally (or mostly) satisfied with it. Hoh humm..

Well, I am also a veteran (been there since Heroes 1), and I'd say HOMM 3 was not that fluid or natural, compared to 2.  It was the same game as 2 with a whole slew of things thrown in, and the simplistic beauty thrown out... not to mention the operas.  4 may not be to your liking, but I'd hardly say it's overly complex.  If anything, most "veterans" are complaining that it's too simple!

You don't "approve" of the new view?  Heh, better tell JVC, he'll fix it for you right away!  Approve... that's an interesting choice of words, you sound like you're the marketing director or something...
