[Allmir Saga] Shatterlight (OOC)

Time to throw some logs into the Bards Glade Pyre and start off 2020 with a new game.  It's been long since I've actually participated in an RP, let alone make one; figured it would be a good idea to change that.  I call upon you all - youngblood (I'm looking at you, Count and Odball) and old - to join.  This is going to be a nice, easygoing RPG, meaning there won't be any numbers and rolls to overcomplicate it.

                                                                           ***

The Setting:

The story is set in the same world as my previous game, this one taking place at roughly the same time.
The war in the east is about to start.  Many a foolhardy folk from all over the world have already boarded ships and sailed to Svad, but there are other opportunities outside of warzones.  Locals in Essoglen speak of mysterious groups of people that started appearing in Juvan, supposedly looking for something called "Shatterlight", but vanishing without a trace in a matter of days.  Things would've calmed down if it hadn't become almost a weekly occurrence for a new group to appear and then vanish into thin air.  With rumors reaching far and wide about these disappearances, Rebor Dinis - the Lord-Merchant of Juvan - has called for anyone knowledgeable about "Shatterlight" to investigate with the promise of gold upon successful delivery.
Saereh Fireshaper, a high-councilwoman from Niv-Bidi and one of the most renowned elementalists of the age believes she can solve the mystery.  You are a part of her entourage - a group of individuals with varied backgrounds who have decided to accompany her.

                                                                           ***

Map of the region:

                                                                           ***

My characters:

Name - Saereh Fireshaper
Race - Dleth
Age - 52
Appearance - Stands at average height and carries herself with finesse.  Wears white velvet robes with gold rimming that cover her entire body.  She also wears a delicate golden mask that could almost pass as a real face were it not for its color.
Bio - Saereh was born in Niv-Bidi into a family of well-known elementalist.  Her talents and affinity towards fire magic have been noticed early on in her life and she was given the best education available.  She excelled as a student, easily outclassing even more seasoned spellcasters.  Upon finishing her formal studies, she was admitted to the Niv-Bidian Grand Academy as a tutor.  During her years teaching elemental magic she was also able to earn a seat at the Niv-Bidian high council, a most prestigious position one could hold.
Personality - When Saereh speaks it is as if her voice is a flame itself.  She is well spoken and formal in all her dealings.  She is confident and collected, but she's also intolerant to people who ask unnecessary questions and has no patience for idle banter.
Belongings - An ornate staff with a flawless jet at the top of it; a concealed dagger
Magic - Saereh is a master elementalist, specializing in fire magic

Name - Maxus
Race - Hestan
Age - 40
Appearance - Tall and muscular, Maxus towers over most people.  Although he is built like a barbarian, he takes a lot of care about his looks, making sure that his short black hair is never messy and his goatee well kept.  He wears a fine suit for traveling and a warm fur coat over it.
Bio - Maxus never knew his parents as he was orphaned not long after his birth.  Left on the streets of Lisso - Niv-Bidi's capital city - it was only by sheer luck that he was found and taken into Saereh's family where he was raised and cared for.  Upon revealing his magical capabilities he was sent to study magic.  While not as successful and gifted as Saereh, Maxus was able to finish his basic studies.  His interest, however, lay in physical combat, something that seemed only natural given his build.  He has served Saereh as a personal bodyguard of sorts, although their relationship is much closer than just that.
Personality - Maxus is more than meets the eye.  His massive frame belittles his refined tastes, and his manners hide the fierceness he possesses should someone mean harm upon him or Saereh.  He is selfless and loyal, but also stubborn at times.
Belongings - A custom-made basterd sword that he wields as if it were an arming sword; a medium sized steel-reinforced shield; a replacement shortsword
Magic - Knowledge of elementalism, prefering weapon enhancement over casting spells

I intend to participate in this activity, though my slow rate of writing may at some point hinder the progress of the RP... I should probably play as someone quite reserved, so that it appears to be in my character's nature not to talk.

So, should we start writing down our character sheets? Also, are we all expected to wield magic?

I don't see why you wouldn't make your characters already.  And they don't necessarily need to be magic users.  I hate to put any restraints on character creation, but they need to be... believable, for the lack of a better word.  They should be coming along for this quest with a good reason.

So Noobie two questions for ya.

Are there restraints on what "schools" of magic a character can learn? Like can they only learn one? Race restrictions?

And

What elements fall under Elemental Magic? We have the big 4. Fire, Earth, Water, Air. Are there other elements that are subcatagories of those? Like metal being under earth? Or plants/wood or poison?

You'll find most (if not all) things explained in the thread I've linked in the OP.  I figured there's no reason to copy/paste everything from there.

But regarding you question

I said:
Magic

For a person to successfully cast a spell, they need to use their life-force to channel energy in such way that fits the requirements of the certain type of magic.  Elementalists, for example, need to focus on an element, and unleash the energy in a way they want the spell to work.  Mortal races have very limited grasp over magic control and cannot cause firestorms, tsunamis, world destruction, etc.  Gods can and...  maybe they will?

Magic takes effort to be learned, and not all are born with the ability to learn in the first place.  Those that are usually go and join mage communities all around the world.

Elemental Magic comes down to manipulating elements - fire, lightning, water (including ice), air, earth.  Nothing much to be said about it.

Healing Magic, I think it's pretty clear.  No growing new limbs, though, and no reviving dead.

Shadow Magic is the common name for pure magic, which focuses on using magic's true chaotic nature to alter the world, be it through destruction or creation.  Shadow magic is what Zhardir (god of magic) turns into other more commonly used forms.
Shadow magic manifests itself as a visible dark energy, thus its name.  Those who practice this kind of magic spend years learning how to control it, often taking them decades to understand the basics... and driving them mad.

Void Magic is rarely used, as it is highly unstable, and I'm talking opening portals into pure nothingness and summoning forth creatures - out of nothing!  Anything can come and go through these portals, from small worms to structures;  it all depends on the portal size and shape.  Some speculate that even whole worlds could possibly be summoned, but that is beyond the capabilities of any Voidmancer.

Soul Magic is a type of magic that plays with the life energies of mortal beings.  Those who specialize in this magic can weaken their opponents (curses), boost their allies (blessings), etc.

Another thing I should mention:
Enchanting doesn't exist in the classical sense you're used to.  Magic users have the ability to imbue items (usually weapons) with their life-force and add certain effects to them.

Also, there are no race restrictions or restrictions regarding the amount of schools of magic one can try to learn, although mastering them all is nigh-impossible.

Let's see if there are actually any other people willing to join in the end.  It would be a bummer to have such small numbers.

Keeping the thread bumped might help.

Alternatively, pestering people over HCM may prove more effective.
