Update to v.2.5.0

-Improved Amethyst: Emerald Tower now work even with save play. Implemented Preventive Counter Strike, Range Retaliation and Reduce Defense. Defense Bonus and Protection from Shooting could be implemented in the next Update.
-Fixed AI in Creature Bank Creator by PerryR.
-Loopsounds plugin implemented, thanks to Strigo.
-Added content pertaining to the VCMI expansion mod "The Tides of War": 21 new creatures, 12 new dwellings, and 6 new creature banks.
-3 new creatures along with their respective dwellings were additionally created.
-Fixed some menor bugs in Third Upgrade Mod.erm.
-Minor balances for Divine Phoenix and Spectral Behemoth.

I've started playing with it, and it looks magnificent! Not only is it even richer in different kinds of creatures and associated structures, but it seems to have solved the problem of upgrade structures built by the AI not being recognized properly when a human player conquered the town. (Maybe that was fixed in an earlier update since you didn't mention it in your last post, but either way, it's a great step forward.

You mean, use no HD? That's the only other mod that's installed. I'll try that, sure.

Edit: And I'll play a random map, this time.

In the bug report there are files registered from other mods like Era Scripts or Unleashed.

Ok. So I've been doing some testing with the mods and scripts I play with, and found out the "Neutral Town and Creature Bank Growth", that is part of WoG Scripts, is what is causing the crashes. It, apparently, conflicts with your mod. Don't think it's buggy, though, because I've been using it before, and it never made the game CTD.

Anyway, I'm glad I don't have to choose between those mods and yours

Cheers!

I've been getting a similar crash on my version. I removed all the other mods except the "Wog (Core)" so that it would just run alone.  So far it seems to crash when a unit is shooting.
Here's the crash report:

I'm having a similar issue fanofheroes is having. I'll put a link to the crash log below, but it always includes this: No Files.ini for 'C:GOG GamesHoMM 3 Complete ERA 3 WOG 3U_HD3_DataPacksForHdCompatibility'
This seems to be a ridiculous message in that I've checked other installations with no problems, and none of them seem to have a Files.ini file in the suggested location.

Specifics: On a clean installation of HoMM3, I installed the latest gaming build (which includes ERA 3.04). Then I installed version 2.5 of the Third Upgrade mod and nothing else. I was playing a random map. Everything was fine until I saved, quit, and returned some time later. The game loaded but then crashed within about thirty seconds, whether I just sitting there or actually doing something. I have experienced the same basic problem on two different maps. Since the error message related to HD, I also tried running without HD. In that case, I couldn't even start the game. It froze when I clicked on single scenario.

Link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kLXHPqEtEc-GMr8tCB8V-vA2294pi-bf/view?usp=sharing

Edit: I just reread fanofheroes' last post. It appears our problems are not the same. I don't have the WOG option selected that he identified as the problem. If it isn't clear from the crash file what options I'm using, I'm happy to provide that information.

Truthfully I assumed the wog core was an essential item to play the game, so I left it enabled. When I get home later I'll try it without that mod enabled to see if I get the same error.

Ideally, it would be nice if a mod was compatible with all the ERA and WOG basics. But when I think about how complicated modding is, especially with an ambitious mod such as this one, it's amazing there aren't a lot more issues. I'll also troubleshoot a bit as I get time, but I imagine as more people play the mod, it will become more apparent what the issue may be. I'm sure V Maiko will fix it if there's enough data to tell what it is.

Edit: I discovered something interesting that may or may not be relevant. The version of the map editor that ships with the latest gaming build seems glitchy. At least three times now, it's generated random maps in which one of the players got two towns at startup. That's easy enough to fix if you notice it, so I just fixed it and went on. The maps play normally without the Third Upgrades mod enabled. Right now, I'm going to start playing a new 3U game using a random map generated by one of the earlier versions to see if it makes a difference. It will be a while before I know, since for me, the crashes start after about three months of game time, but I'll report back if I discover that may be the problem.

Edit again: Experiment failed because for some reason the map editor that shipped with later versions of ERA II isn't compatible with ERA III for reasons that are not immediately apparent. When I selected the map, I got a whole string of error messages like "could not load mask for avtwoodl.def! Type: resource. I got some for resources, monsters, campfires, seer's huts. When the map finally finished loading, I exited the game and checked the map in the latest version of map editor. It had all kinds of obvious errors indicated on the map by a circle with a diagonal line through it for missing graphics. Weird! Anyway, I could easily see the game crashing under these conditions for reasons having nothing to do with the earlier issue, so it's not a good test. I'm going to try to play with a map generated by the current editor and see if I can get one that doesn't require multiple starting towns correction. Sigh! Oh, I can generate one using the ingame routine. That one doesn't produce multiple towns for the same player at startup. I just tested, and the same problem doesn't occur.

Final Edit: That experiment also failed. The game based on the new map started, but on the second round, my hero attacked some skeletons, and I got a whole bunch of messages like, Resourcemanager: get sample could not find sfx resource: kill.82M, after which the game crashed with the same irrelevant error message. From earlier testing, I know that random maps work without any unusual error messages when Third Upgrades mod is not installed. I can play complete games with no problem. However, I don't know whether the issue is the 3U mod or some change made in recent ERA updates. It does appear that the way in which the map is generated may have something to do with the issue, whatever it may be, but beyond that, not being a programmer, I have no idea what it is.

Several anomalies have been reported in my mod, crashes of different types that even I have experienced, it is hoped that ERA contributors can diagnose what the problems are so that it can be resolved as quickly as possible, sorry for the inconvenience everyone.

Thanks for being so on top of this, but no apology is necessary. As I've often said, modding is a complicated business, particularly for a mod that does as much as yours does. It's almost inevitable that there will be some bugs. In this case, the situation is further complicated by the arrival of ERA III, which changes a great deal. I'm sure everything will get sorted out eventually. It's a tribute to how good this mod is that people are interested in seeing it fixed rather than just moving on.

Ok, temporary solution, go to my mod folder, in data folder, open amethyst.cfg with a notepad and put "SavePreserve=0"

It's amazing that such a small thing makes all the difference. I can confirm it works perfectly. I tried it with a saved game and with a newly started game, and it both cases, it ironed out the glitch. (I did have one crash, with the same error message as before, but this time, I successfully continued the game after reloading a save. It's been my experience that major mods in HoMM3 and in other games do tend to crash from time to time. As long as it's not a permanent thing, where the games keeps crashing in the same spot, it's no big deal.

I did notice one other odd thing which may or may not be intentional. After fighting in a magical utopia, I was offered a primal faerie dragon. I had no space for one. In earlier versions of the mod, that just meant the extra troops just disappeared. But in this case, the primal faerie dragon replaced one of my existing troops. (Powerful as it seems to be, I'm not sure it's worth 693 centagnolls. It seems as if the player should be given a choice to replace troops in this way or not.

Otherwise, everything is going well. As I may have said before, the variety is amanzing.

I'm glad everything has been resolved, sadly it was expected that SavePreserve configuration could save the modified parameters of the creatures in the emerald tower, but apparently there are shortcomings and we fell back to once again the lack of ability to save the changes of the creatures, sorry for the inconvenience.

Mine is still producing the same error. I've added a few shooting units and only some (not all the shooters) produce the same error.

maybe just to clarify, I changed the "1" to a "0" in the SavePreserve.  Or should there be 2 lines reading:

SavePreserve=1
SavePreserve=0

Just one line for SavePreserve=0.

Most likely you need to start a new game for it. The savegame with SavePreserve=1 has been corrupted.

That's what I had, the one line. I re-installed the mod from new just to make sure. But ah well. Maybe the next version/update will give me better luck. But thank you for your help

That's odd, but perhaps there's more than one problem. I had the same error message, but it didn't seem to be connected to shooting troops (of which I've had plenty since this thing started). Here's a potential way to see if your issue really is with shooting troops: try the Gog setting in which shooters don't shoot. (I forget exactly what it's called, but I think it gives more hit points and removes shooting ability.) I don't know why anyone would want that setting, but it might be a good way to test the problem if it is connected to shooting.

Which ERA version are you using? Mine is 3.04 and seems to work with 2.5 (with the suggested save preserve setting). (I tried ERA 3.20 and experienced all kinds of problems with it.) 3.04 is the latest version in the gaming build.

So I'll describe my situation:

I used the mod to create new creatures.  the non-shooting ones, no problem.  the shooting ones, its like a 50/50 split.  I double checked to see if they each had a .def file associated to each creature that shoots.  I checked to make sure there were the right animations, and sounds.

I went even further and made the specific shooters into non-shooters.  WHen I did that it didn't crash and it worked perfectly.

Mind you, after reading your response, its possible I may not have the correct ERA version.  The one I'm using is from:

HoMM3 ERA 3.0.3 + HD-mod 5.0 RC94 + ERA SCRIPTS
v1.35

http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=46111&pagenumber=1

I have the latest version of that one, and whenever updates are available I have it set up to update.  I don't know if I'm using the correct one or not, but if I am not, could you kindly please send the link to the version you're using and I'll give it a go

I got mine from here: http://heroes3wog.net/homm3-era-hd-era-scripts-gaming-build-download/

I believe you said you were using 3.03, and the one that comes with the gaming build is 3.04, which may or may not make a difference. I'm not sure which one(s) VMaiko tested on.

When I read your last comment, I remembered that you have customized earlier versions of the mod as well, which means you know far more about the programming aspect than I do. That means I probably don't know enough to give you good advice if updating to a later version of ERA doesn't help. Hopefully, VMaiko will be able to offer some advice.

(Just for the sake of complete information, the newest version of ERA is 3.20, but, as I said, I had a lot of problems with that one. Perhaps you wouldn't, since I think my problems might have been caused by installation. I've had difficulties in the past trying to update individual components that were updated before they got incorporated in the gaming build. This may be a similar case. For one thing, it appears that different ERA versions may need slightly different HD mod versions to function properly. As a result, I usually just wait for the gaming build to update before updating. I mention this only because 3.20 might work better for you. Anyway, if you desperate enough and want to try, the easiest link for that is here: http://heroes3wog.net/how-to-install-wake-of-gods-era-3-with-latest-wog-sripts-and-hd-mod-tutorial/

You're too kind.  I wouldn't say I know anything about the programming part haha.  All I really did with this mod was add some more creatures and artifacts that I found/created to the bunch as I go along.

I only use this mod and ACM.  They're so much fun and have really taken the game on another level for me

I'll wait and see if any updates improve my situation. I just tried version 3.04 that you referenced but no luck.  I haven't tried 3.20 version yet, so I'll wait and see about that one.  But thank you for your advice and help. Any is always appreciated!!

Guys, please upload your savegame + debug folder each time the game crashes with additional info on how to reproduce the bug. That really helps with diagnosis. Thanks.

There is also another way to troubleshoot in the case that you're describing, but it's tedious. Create a clean install of HoMM3, then install version 2.5 of 3U without your additions. Does it work? Then add the new critters and artifacts back in one at a time. Yes, that is tedious, just as I said, but it might enable you to figure out where the problem is. I can't see any reason for that to make a difference, but obviously, something is.

Archer30, I'll certainly upload my saved game file the next time I have a problem. As it happens, after implementing VMaiko's suggestion, even my saved games now work normally. As for the debug folder, I found nothing generated by the crash. This particular crash only generates an HD_CRASH_LOG.TXT file in the main folder, which is what fanofheroes copied into his post.
