Dragon's Dogma

No, it's not underrated, it sucks.

It's an unfinished game that gets undeserved praise for the combat system, which is pretty much based around spamming your strongest attack until your enemy dies. The strongest attack may be influenced by the element it's tied to.

The story is weird (like a collection of unrelated cutscenes), and the romance is the worst romance ever made (you can romance any NPC in this game, even fat merchants or children, to have a rather harrowing scene of... well, you know what after a certain plot point, UGH).

The game has a tiny ingame map that is mostly corridor based, with infinitely respawning enemies (same every time).

The UI is awful, navigating through two inventory screens is dreadful, and there's so much walking it feels like a walking sim at times. With you losing your breath every 10 seconds because some genius though it would be a nice idea to make a stamina bar outside combat.

There's a lot of ways to customize your char's appearance, but you end up with a tall anorectic character because it's the only way to run faster and regenerate stamina earlier (yes, those things are actually related to your mass and leg length! in a game that is a walking sim. Good luck playing a fat shorty).

The game has DLC dungeon which supposedly (as the say on Steam) "fixes" the game by dropping the plot and focusing on dungeon crawling, but surprise surprise, now you need to grind for items because the damage system sucks (it's just a comparison of attack and defense, if att<def you will do glancing blows only and need to grind for a better weapon).

Progression, after unlocking all skills for each class (which happens rather quickly) is entirely based on getting a new weapon, which in most cases simply adds more STR or MAG, thus pumping your damage output past the threshold and you can finally damage the boss that way.

And wolves hunt in packs.

Best things about it? Music and the ability to climb large opponents (which quickly loses its appeal due how clunky it feels).

Do yourself a favor, don't play it. No, it does not have a "brilliant" combat system, whatever the reddit dogma tells you, unless you like spamming the same thing over and over. Unless you want to romance the fat, old merchant and laugh your butt off seeing the dramatic scene with him. Just cover your eyes when it comes to hanky-panky afterwards.

Never heard of the game. And I doubt it's like Diablo 3 spam (strategic spam), right?

Tbh I didn't know about this game before but I've been known to slack on my gaming in recent years. One day I will make amends but not feeling it just yet

I remember checking dogma's skill system which seemed to be about upgrading the exact same techniques again and again. At first glance it seemed like it had a wealth of techniques but nah. Hearing that you end up spamming the strongest of them is the worst case scenario, byebye replayability.

Respawning enemies at specific places is also not my cap of tea, I don't suppose there is variation in their patrols or at least a different mix of enemy groups? But if you're gonna be spamming the same ability it just as well. I've been spoiled by divinity original sin where you have to time and combo your abilities in a creative and efficiency manner. In fact, go play that.

Walking simulation with 10 sec cooldown out of combat, brilliant ^^ And shorter/heavier characters moving slower haha love it!

DLC dungeon that requires gear grind, pass.

Climbing larger opponents sounds like a great idea. Too bad it's implemented in an unpolished/unfinished game. An rpg should be so much more than gear grind and dps.

Yeah, go get divinity original sin 1&2

Not to necro a thread or anything, but, I really do like Dragon's Dogma. And I don't think it is an unpolished game at all.

As for the combat and the whole "spamming your strongest abilities" that goes for almost all video games out there. There are plenty of main stream games where once you have a specific ability that is all you use.

Yeah the story is a little unorthodox and can be hard to follow if you aren't paying attention, but it is actually pretty deep once you dive into it fully. And the cutscenes aren't what make up the story lol.

Half right. But your inventory weight also affects your stamina and how fast it drains while running/climbing. Bigger, stockier, characters are able to carry more but move slower. Thinner, slimmer, characters can carry less but climb over things like you are a goddamned monkey. I've yet to see a game where your actual character design influences in game mechanics to such a degree.

If that's what you think then you missed the point of the DLC. It doesn't drop the story lol, you still have to do the main story at some point. You can access the new dungeon at any point in the game. You can go to it, progress as far as you can then leave and return to the main story. That is literally it's purpose. If you think that you are supposed to grind out the whole dungeon you are wrong. The dungeon is literally designed to make the end-game sequence of the game look like child's play, and it really does this well. You enter the dungeon, go as far as you can, then go back with the new gear you have acquired and do the main story and level up, then come back and progress further.

I mean your character level affects your stats more than your weapon does. Not to mention that a lot of enemies actually have a "hidden" level. Like any MMO if you are too low level you aren't gonna be one shotting it and are gonna get your snow kicked. In the end-game sequence, yeah your gear matters. Once again though, that can literally be said for most video games out there.

Yup. 100%. Certain enemies have certain strengths and weaknesses. Hell there are some enemies that are completely immune to magic. I learned this the hard way. Gotta learn to balance things out.

Yeah there are different groups of enemies that spawn when you reach the end-game phase of the game. They are tougher and nastier.

Literally my only grip. But once you get the Portcrystals and the Eternal Ferrystone, you can literally teleport to anywhere in the world that you have set a Portcrystal down. And seeing as that you can get 4-5 of them in one playthrough, and set them down anywhere, it cuts down on the walking around quite a bit.
