best fanmade HoMM 1 & 2 maps
After a couple of years I've returned to H2 and will also hopefully play H1 a bit these days. So, that got me wondering, are there any particularly interesting fanmade maps for these two installments? H3 has many great maps representing Europe (I have no idea how many times I've replayed "A Viking We Shall Go"...) or the entire world, or ones with interesting and creative stories. Is there any equivalent of those for these two early games?

The best and quick option is find heroes1 and heroes2 map databases and browse map by rating filter.

Enroth forum
In H12 most important is better faction and unit ballance than map. AI is very intelligent and if you play genius lvl game is very very interesting for each map! Ive using moded exe and its greatest games than original. Not only warlock playing!

Interesting, I'll definitely dig through the sites a bit! Admittedly, those filters that sort maps by highest rating usually aren't very reliable (an obscure map with only one 5/5 rating ends up in a higher place than a very popular one whose average rating is 4.5/5), so I wanted to hear what are your personal favourites as well.
