How J.R.R. Tolkien spoke about the beauty of Mary

A very interesting and beautiful piece about the presentation of Our Lady in literature.

I am the mother of fair love, and of fear, and of knowledge, and of holy hope. In me is all grace of the way and of the truth; in me is all hope of life and of virtue. Come to me all that desire me and be filled with my fruits.

O Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Grace, Hope of the world.
Hear us, your children, who cry to you.

O God, who by the marvelous protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary has strengthened us firmly in hope, grant we beseech You, that by persevering in prayer at her admonition, we may obtain the favors we devoutly implore. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

O Mary, my Mother, I kneel before you with heavy heart. The burden of my sins oppresses me. The knowledge of my weakness discourages me. I am beset by fears and temptations of every sort. Yet I am so attached to the things of this world that instead of longing for Heaven I am filled with dread at the thought of death.

O Mother of Mercy, have pity on me in my distress. You are all-powerful with your Divine Son. He can refuse no request of your Immaculate Heart. Show yourself a true Mother to me by being my advocate before His throne. O Refuge of Sinners and Hope of the Hopeless, to whom shall I turn if not you?

Obtain for me, then, O Mother of Hope, the grace of true sorrow for my sins, the gift of perfect resignation to God's Holy Will, and the courage to take up my cross and follow Jesus. Beg of His Sacred Heart the special favor that I ask in this novena.

But above all I pray, O dearest Mother, that through your most powerful intercession my heart may be filled with Holy Hope, so that in life's darkest hour I may never fail to trust in God my Savior, but by walking in the way of His commandments I may merit to be united with Him, and with you in the eternal joys of Heaven. Amen.

Mary, our Hope, have pity on us.
Hope of the Hopeless, pray for us.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of death. Glory Be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Peace.

I'd tap that.

Normally I'd feel like an ass going after a married woman, but god had already sullied her honour so fair game.

Galadriel reminds me a lot of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, which many soldiers from the crusades turned to for relief from PTSD following the campaigns.

Baronus

Yes probably Galadriel has something like Mary but ofcourse Lord of the Rings is not a copy paste from Bible. Its far from literally explanations.

The books more so than the movies imho. The extended cut of LOTR maybe a little more.

Sauron is also meant to be a pretty boy, him as Lucifer would be perfect lol. Succeeded far more as a captive using deception and playing to people's fears than he ever did as a 'Dark Lord'. The whole idea of the rings of power are perfect as well. I don't think the movies explain them very well (not that they needed to, I loved how the trilogy never overwhelmed you with information, however at the same time certain things like how the hell is the 'heir' of Gondor just some vagabond needed to be explained). And Arnor is mentioned only once in the whole trilogy lol. Back to Sauron and the rings. They were perfect, give the enemy power to rule and govern themselves, that embedds you in their foundations then all you need to do is take it away and make it all crumble into naught. Now that's Sauron as a great depiction of Evil as something that corrupts you at your roots. It's a false olive branch.

Also Boromir bless him, I think his character went through so much. It's brilliantly done, we never see his land of Gondor (so how can't we feel sympathy for his plight or his people, we ain't invested enough), yet his cause is just and his intentions are pure. Yet, he redeems himself, finally realises that what was his only salvation is a lie, he lost hope/faith, but regains it in the end in his dying moments. I never saw the movie as particularly religious, but can definately see that it was written by someone who took his faith seriously and implemented key themes seamlessly.

@tsar

What about Saruman? One of the best characters in The Lord of the Rings in my opinion. Beautiful example of a character whose self-righteous ambition caused him to fall from the position of respect and power which he so craved. Really love me a good villain.

It helps that he was played brilliantly in the movies by an awesome actor. By contrast, I didn't care very much for Sauron's depiction on film.
