Up to the 1.0 release this game will be 99.9% the same to the original HoMM2. Without bugs and crashes. Multiplatform, together with higher resolution support.
And I hope this flawless version of fheroes2 would become a starting point for numerous quality mods or even add-ons, which will enliven HoMM2 and revive H2 community.
The first step would be made by our team in a separate add-on, where we will bring some relevant new features into this game, without ruining the original gameplay. Having said that, every old players and newcomers will enjoy Heroes of Might and Magic II.

Yes. This project will definitely run on android devices in future. However, current goal is to make it completely operational on PC platforms first.

Wonderfull! Im waiting with impatience!
First is to have very good HI-II AI. Graphics we have now.
Second modding platform.
If we will have it I see new future for HeroesII!
We can eg. merge Project Ironfist with Heroes III Succesion Wars! Something as VCMI WOG ERA HOTA in HII mode! Thats it!

Dear fans and players of Heroes of Might and Magic II!

We're excited to announce a new release of fheroes2 - 0.8.3 version. This is an intermediate release just before 0.9 version with many interesting changes.
One of them is that AI became even smarter: it properly manipulates castle construction, monster and hero recruitment, creates a complex and optimized routes over map to visit needed objects, fights monsters and collect items on the way.
Also we improved rendering speed of the world map by more than 20%, fixed drawings in castles (the original game draws them improperly), fixed well-known War Troll's stone and Cavalry sprites (also incorrect in the original game) and made many other changes.
Have a look at screenshots from the original game and our project (notice how Tavern or Hut for example are rendered).

As usual we also fixed more than 100 bugs for this release.
We hope, you like the changes in fheroes2 made the past months!

fHeroes2 team.

This beauty graphics! And music. I have big problems with H2 music to run. Which format does it support?! Original old format is inside agg pack but horrible quality in dos version. Midi? Mp3? Or maybe you know way how to have orginal with enough quality?!
And because we have 2 versions of city music switching option a choice will be a good solution.

Good day/evening/morning, fans of Heroes of Might and Magic 2!

We're very excited to reveal a new release of fheroes2 - 0.8.4 version just before Christmas and New Year holidays! The team decided to split 0.9 release and give you an opportunity to enjoy the better game once we polish few more things before major 0.9 release. For this release we made main focus on game's logic and mechanics and fixed many places in the game: scrollbars, unit stack separation by keyboard, UI dialog elements and interaction with objects on maps. More importantly, we improve game's performance on low-profile devices and fixed the issue with full screen for SDL 2 builds. As usual here is a set of screenshots for visual changes of the game:
- Freeman's Foundry (notice that the original game does not show the third monster)
0.8.3 version (before):

0.8.4 version (now):

- Monster's small icons (the original game has the same defects as before 0.8.4)
0.8.3 version (before):

0.8.4 version (now):

We also fixed over 100 bugs for this release.

Enjoy upcoming holidays and the game!
fHeroes2 team

Can't wait to try this out, once the 1.0 version is released. Heroes II is still preferable to me in many aspects compared to III, even with the HD mod and HotA.

I like that you mentioned the OpenXcom project, as at least for me it is the gold standard when it comes to open source remakes. One thing I like is how they provide a completely faithful to the original game experience, but also new features which can be turned on or off by the player depending on what they want. I hope this is how Free Heroes II will handle changes from the original as well (any new features to be optional for people that want a purist Heroes II game, or want only specific changes, rather than all).

Only thing concerning for now is the replaced AI. I understand the logic behind the decision, but this will probably be the biggest thing that can alienate classic Heroes II players, as once changes are on the table, everyone will have their own opinion of what should and shouldn't be done. Changes have to be very very minimal and subtle imo, and again - optional.

Cheers and thanks for all the work you are doing keeping this often overlooked masterpiece relevant.

Thanks, @Wind_Falcon.
Talking about AI... I'm 100% sure, all HoMM2 players would agree with me, that AI is quite weak in the original game. So we'd like to bring it to the higher level, as well as keeping it competitive and fair for the common player.
We're planning to make it really strong and unpredictable at highest difficulty levels, to make a challenge even on old and well known maps. I believe this can bring a completely new experience to players, and restore interest to this fabulous game.

I'm sure there will be plenty of people that like the AI as is, know all the tricks, and love abusing it.

I'm all for improving the AI, as long as it is optional. In Heroes II (like in III) much of the difficulty comes not directly from the AI, but from the maps, so a much improved AI on the already hard maps can lead to unexpected results.

I think a vanilla-like AI with minor tweaks should be in the game.

Currently, we're making an AI completely from scratch... So it won't be completely the same to original one. Even if we'd try to do so.
I'm not sure on the result, but I hope we can recreate AI for the lowest difficuilty levels as close to original one, as we can. But on higher levels it would become more and more complicated.
We want to create AI in a such way, where difficuilty levels really matter, how strong will be your enemy. Not only adding extra resources and army, as it was in the original game.

Hello, @Baronus .
Fheroes2 supports midi music on default. As well as original CD music, which can be switched in option menu in game.
What version of the game are you using? Is it compiled one, that can be download through our github main page? Or have you compiled it by yourself?

@Baronus.
So, don't you even have a music in main menu?

Try to use attached .bat file from the archive to download free demo and extract fheroes2 into this folder? It should work for 100%...
I suppose, something wrong with your files... You can ask for help our dev team in discord chanel. And find a solution together.
