I remember your proposals were always amazing, you did not disappoint! If you don't mind me asking where do you get your artwork?

Thanks! It's always fun venting out some stuff out of the chest. HOHOHO

The images and artwork I usually select on Pinterest, for years now, collecting this and that for those proposals, which are still ongoing. When I don't find on Pinterest something too specific, I try Google. The best Pinterest stuff comes from Artstation and Devianart. Sometimes from certain games Wikifandom and Gamepedias. I try to find things with similar traces and styles for the same faction, not to appear too mixed up. And townscreens I usually grab several of these selected arts and tinker them together.

Regarding units specifically, sometimes I find something quite cool. So, most of the times, I create perks and specials of those creatures fitting how they look, actually and check if it fits the theme and the other units as well. So if you see a rabbit there with a crimson tail, I'll probably add something related to that tail.

Quote:
Heroes: I like how you took classic heroes and completely redid them in a way that still fits them. The one thing I don't understand though is why do they have specializations if they all have their own unique class?

Ah, that – I forgot to mention. Classes are affected by how heroes are played. They may upgrade them, add strats or even lose some effectiveness in favor to something else. I also forgot to describe their role: Commander, Explorer or Ruler. They are set by default in one of these three and their Class is inserted in one of those too. So, when they play the other two roles more than the default one, their classes may change (combination of skills, proficiency, etc.). Specialties are permanent and don't actually change into anything else.

Which is the next faction, then?

Well I was waiting on a few more scores but it doesn't look like they're coming so here are the results:

Rimgrabber - 9

PandaTar - 8.75

Jiriki9 - 8.75

FirePaladin - 7.33

Alon - 6.83

I feel kinda bad about coming in 1st

Anyway, according to my list randomizer, Inferno is next, unless anyone has any objections.

Also, do people want to keep an overall score from across rounds, or just score each round individually? I'm fine either way, I think the cross-round scoring would be a total of all of your final scores rather than an average, to reward people for participating in as many rounds as they can. Not that the points mean anything lol

Either way for me is fine. Although I have not participated of Necropolis thread. Which was one I had a very different suggestion to present.

Anyway, Inferno now (as mine is called Gates). Will try to finish the townscreen for this one. Just finished selecting a huge array of stuff to compose a nice landscape. ^_^

Don't worry about Necropolis we didn't end up scoring it because nobody seemed really into it.

Okay, some scores (which will not change the order because <3 Rimgrabber):

PandaTar

Honestly, the only criticism I have of this is the picture - it portrays Haven as a bit too utopian. But everything else - the implied lore, the complexity of the heroes, the units - is really cool. I especially like the Falconer, who is 100% within the range of what I think Haven/Castle is and also completely original.

Score: 9

FirePaladin

It's hard for me to be objective about this because of the lord/cleric crib. It's a pretty conventional Haven/Castle lineup; the lack of flying units goes back to H2, as opposed to the more symmetric lineup for H3+, and I like that this is well-thought strategically with compensation, i.e. the extra war machines, inc. the trebuchet as an alternative to air support for breaking shieldbearer-archer armies.

Score: 8

Jiriki9

I like what you're implying re the lore, but as with FirePaladin's heroes, it's hard for me to be objective since it's similar to what I've been saying. Not accusing you or FirePaladin of plagiarism, I feel like it's a natural evolution of the H4+ Haven, from crusaders-as-portrayed-by-other-crusaders to crusaders-as-portrayed-by-non-Christians.

That said, bonus points for actually talking about the relationship with the other factions, which I didn't think to do originally even though I 100% should have. And the faction skills are really cool.

Score: 8.5

Rimgrabber

I wanted to be annoying and dock points for the Roman theme because it seemed like pure flavor, and then I saw the barbarian as an auxiliary and . I will say that the classes you use don't quite fit the Roman them but try mixing it up with a medieval one in a way that I don't think works (Romans did not have such a thing as templar), but the unit lineup is cool and plays well with a Haven-as-complex-empire-with-auxiliaries theme.

Score: 9

Edit: I have a slight objection to Inferno since it's so similar to Necropolis (I like that H4 merged them, though not the specific way it did), and the H3 Inferno existed in a specific place in the MM lore that doesn't replicate elsewhere. I can still do it, but it'll be a strange lineup that won't look like the Inferno that you're used to and will be more directly based on Christian mythologies of the devil as a trickster.

It's totally cool if you make it different from classic HoMM Inferno, that's the point of the contest Personally I feel like doing Inferno next feels a bit unnatural, but I also did a randomized list exactly for that reason. If you'd rather do another faction we can. Dungeon was next on the list after Inferno, followed by Rampart.

Nah, it's fine, if I wanted to just do my vision I'd start a thread. Or more likely try to code something and then start a thread. I did write a little piece of code for movement on a hex grid, but every actual programmer I know who saw it mocked me for how bad my coding is.

Actually, to me they are not so similar, it depends on your vision of Necropolis AND your vision of Inferno. Yes, they both are "These are evil, all others hate them" factions, but to me, it feels not so hard to keep them different BOTH in terms of gameplay and lore.

doing this for fun
Haven
"Light and Justice are the most important things, as they will bring peace and harmony to all, Evil and Death must be vanquished forever."

Gameplay
I imagine haven to focus on troops with healing/anti-evil abilities and their troops are usually non-lacking in any category, but not excelling in any category either.

Faction Relations
Tower- Huh, they care for magic more than they do for justice, an ok ally, but not the best one. Peace or Alliance.
Feywilds- the elves care more for plants and trees than humans and wizards, a dangerous personality. Peace.
Catacombs- supreme greedy and domineering violators of justice, they must be vanquished. War.
Hell- the root of all evil and destruction, we must annihilate them all without any mercy. War.
Necropolis- totally injust raisers of the dead, they must be vanquished, as their malicious practices cannot stand. War.
Tribe- the orcs are a bit too uncivilized and brutish to make a friend or ally, but they're always to busy with other countries to bother us. Neutral.
Ziggurat- these lizardmen may hide in their foul, stinky bogs, they have nothing useful, but do not much harm. Neutral.
Atlantis- they seem to value life and justice more than others, making them the best ally. Alliance.
Factory- we just can't understand them not sharing their technology, a sin for sure: selfishness. Neutral shifting to Minor Conflict.

Heroes

Lord
the lords are the rulers of the estates and often serve as combat commanders and warriors for the haven armies.
Starting Stats: Attack: 2. Defense: 2. Spellpower: 1. Knowledge: 1.
Likely Skills: Leadership, Tactics, Attack, Armorer.
Unlikely Skills: Wisdom, Sorcery, Dark Magic, Scholar.

Chaplain
these holy followers of Light and Justice serve as arcane battlefield medics and dealers of divine punishment over haven's armies and enemy armies.
Starting Stats: Attack: 0. Defense: 1. Spellpower: 2. Knowledge: 3.
Likely Skills: Light Magic, Enchantment Magic, Mysticism, Enlightenment.
Unlikely Skills: Dark Magic, Primal Magic, Attack, Artillery.

In Construction...

Hi everyone, this is my (extremely late) entry for your consideration.

My baseline game for this concept is homm5 with 7 creatures/town with 2 upgrades

*Range Penalty: Different creatures may have a specific number of tiles as their ranged penalty, and the damage reduction is also specified.
penalty range: number of tiles that creature must be within to deal max damage
penalty reduction: damage outside of that tile range

1. Peasant -> Conscript / Hunter

Peasant: Typically weak, Peasants at least have the taxpayer ability that contributes gold to your economy

Conscript: With added "training", "weapons", and "armor", conscripts are......still extremely weak.

Hunters: Some lords instead choose to sign local hunters into their army. Their shortbows are fairly effective at extremely short ranges.
+shooter penalty range 4 tiles penalty reduction 30%
+call targets: hit creatures take 10% more damage from other ranged attacks until they move.

2. Crossbowmen-> Marksmen/ Longbowmen

Crossbowmen: Standard ranged unit of the empire.
shooter: penalty range: 6 tiles penalty reduction 50%

Marksmen: Specialized Crossbowmen are so accurate that they can even hit targets in their most vulnerable locations

+No Range Penalty
+Armor Piercing: Negates half of enemy armor

Longbowmen: Though the crossbow is a deadly weapon, some still prefer the classic longbow

+ 2 penalty range
+ 25% penalty reduction
+ Volley: Unit initiative is set to 0.2 after shooting.

3. Footmen -> Squire/Cathar

Footmen: The Standard infantry unit of the Empire
Shielded: -50% damage from ranged attacks

Squire: Squires assist their knights in battle.
+Support Allies: Adjacent allies gain the "Shielded ability". In addition, casting a beneficial spell on this target will change it to a 3x3 area

Cathar: Patrollers of far-flung corners of the Empire, Cathars are trained to be quick to act.
-Shielded
+First Responders: Cathars begin combat with a bonus 0.5 to Initiative. In addition, whenever a friendly stack is dealt damage, they gain a bonus 0.1

4. Spearmen -> Pikemen / Halberdiers

Spearmen: These spear-weilding troops are especially effective against Calvary forces.
First Strike: These units strike first even when they are attacked.
Anti-Calvary: Attacking this unit with a non-flying unit while negate 5% of damage for every tile travelled

Pikemen: These units are a offensive upgrade to the Pikemen

Halberdiers: These units are more defensive upgrade.

5. Monks->Bishops /Zealots

Monks: Worshippers of Elrath can call down light magic to damage opponents at range.
Shooter: Penalty Range: 6 tiles Penalty Reduction 50%
Armor Piercing: See Above Marksmen

Bishops: Bishops not only fight opponents, but can assist them with magic spells.
+Caster: Advanced Bless, Advanced Cleanse

Zealots: Zealots are fanatical and their attacks dispel positive effects on their opponents
+Purging Strike: Hitting a opponent reduces the duration of all positive status effects by 2 turns.

6. Calvary -> Paladin / Champions

Calvary: Mounted quick units that deal more damage per tile walked to a opponent
Jousting: +5% damage per tile walked

Paladin: Paladins automatically cleanse close units at the beginning of their turn.
+Lay Hands: Reduces the duration of all negative effects on self and adjacent units by 2 turns at the start of their tur.

Champions: Champions great spears push aside defensive units for a critical blow
+Break Line: Champions can push aside tier 1-4 units, striking the unit behind them and dealing 50% damage to the first stack.

7. Angel -> Archangel / Seraph

Angel: Divine beings that aid the humans in the quest for Elrath's defense
Flyer

Archangel: Archangels can revive dead stacks
+Caster: Expert Ressurection

Seraph: Seraphs deal deadly blows to their enemies. Strongest unit of the Empire
+Judgement: Does bonus damage to enemy stack equal to 25% of that units last strike against a friendly stack.

Yeah, the thing is that for me, after the first few lineups, it just gets less interesting to crayon lineups than to figure out how these form an actual game, with data structure for the adventure and combat maps, tech trees, and what have you.
