Good...

Now you understand how the locals feel.

...not that they had much choice in the matter. There are geographical changes as well, but I couldn't represent those adequately with that map.

That's one of the reasons I prefer the post-Exodus era, it's less tied to geography and more tied to theme/culture.

Unrelated: Here is a good tool if you want to get more visual with your character (not just for this RP either).

As for characters, I have a couple of ideas. I'll finalize it after I see the rest of you and decide which one will balance things out.

Sheets

My free time starts tomorrow, at about this time. I will take all the characters you guys made, make the sheets for the setting, then we can get the ball rolling.

In the meantime, it seems as if we're ending up with Arcadia pre-Exodus. It's not what I imagined we'd be doing but, thankfully, I have a LOT of material for that. It's a very ...interesting time period for certain parts of Arcadia, with plenty of new (old) things for natives as well as newcomers.

Expect a post about the typical races one can be expected to find there later today, when I find the time.

A bit of info (1 of 3):

It's time to offer some info on our playing grounds. Since there's a lot of information on the chosen venue, I will be splitting this in three parts. The first part will be about the different species/races found in Arcadia. The second part will be about the general geopolitical state of it, controversial as it may be. Finally, the third will be about the city/area where most of the game will take place.

So, let us begin without further ado.

Arcadia: Part 1 - Species

By the time First Contact happens, Arcadians have long since interbred into a single subspecies of Terran, inheriting various traits from their forefathers. That, however is far into the future, a thousand years after the Exodus and centuries before our story takes place. Back in the days before the Exodus, Arcadia was populated by different species and races, each contributing to the overall culture and genetics of the land formerly known as Eastern Europe.

In order of population percentage, from most common to least, these are the native denizens of Arcadia:

* Humans - Wampyri: Originally found primarily in the Kingdom of Dacia, the Wampyri quickly spread across all the Arcadian nations, interbreeding with the local human population. Their eyes have a red ring around the iris, and their canine teeth are more pronounced than those of other humans. They do not enjoy being associated with the fictional undead and many will go out of their way to engage in activities that go against the usual banes of vampires in myth.

Wampyr male - Wampyr female

* Humans - Sapiens: A race in decline as more of them interbred with the Wampyri. Primarily Tellurian in origin, they represent the local population before the Sundering. Their influence in the culture of each region is undeniable, and their initial higher tolerance of sunlight made them indispensable to the newcomers. A small number of them, hailing from ages past, returned to Earth from Mithbar during the Sundering.

* Chimaeras - Fauns: Originally created by the Eldar as genetically engineered soldiers, like all Chimaeras, Fauns eventually found their place in Arcadian society. Primarily found in the Grecian Diarchy, these beastmen have a reputation of being rowdy and prone to wild passions but nobody can deny they often become the soul of a party. Their sharp senses and familiarity with the wilds make them likely to pick a life of wandering between settlements.

Faun male - Faun female

* Hauflins - Gnomes: Fewer in numbers than the rest, except for certain regions of the Kingdom of Wendia, Gnomes favour settlements near lush forests, where they often develop elaborate secret gardens. When among larger races, they try their best to adapt. Most can be rather touchy about being mocked for their height, though they generally get along with other Arcadians. They tend to have a larger percentage of Attuned among them, compared to the other races.

Gnome male - Gnome female

* Sarpa - Gorgons: Whether they are gorgeous or petrifying is a matter of dispute among those who have encountered them. What cannot be disputed is that most Gorgons can charm the habit off a nun. As one would expect, they are mainly found in the Grecian Diarchy. They usually take on a more inconspicuous appearance when living among other races. Like the Wampyri, they are rather perplexed and annoyed by their usual depictions in popular culture in the centuries before the Sundering.

Gorgon - Sadly, Hero Forge doesn't have snake hair.

* Anakim - Cyclopes: Contrary to what one might expect, these man-eating giants are not found exclusively in the lands of the Grecian Diarchy. Several sightings have been reported in the Scythian Territories, while the armies of the Kingdom of Slavia count many casualties and fatalities from clashing with Cyclopes. Not the brightest of Arcadians, they are usually smart enough to employ basic tactics, especially when hunting alongside their pet hydras.

Cyclops - Likewise, Hero Forge doesn't allow a single eye.

* Nymphs/Dryads: Easily the rarest race found in Arcadia, and the only Celestials on the list. Dryads are precisely what one might expect. Gorgeous women, usually of green skin and hair, rarely wearing any clothes beyond the bare minimum, and powerful to a frightening degree. They traditionally avoided settlements, sticking to the woods of their birth, though there are rumours to the contrary in recent years. They sometimes clash with the Gorgons as members of the two races can target the same individual for mating purposes.

Due to the geographic location and political ties between the Arcadian nations and other polities, one can also find a number of visitors to the land. The most likely to show up are natives of Avalon, Utgard, or Idurat.

The short answer is "yes".

Technology is all over the place. Some bits are up to current levels, others are marginally above medieval, while a handful of pockets are somewhat ahead.

It also matters what kind of technology we're discussing. Don't expect anything that relied on satelites, for example. Most of them were destroyed during the Sundering.

The state of technology will come into play, so it will be interesting to see how the characters react to it.

A bit of info (2 of 3):

First, let me clarify

Up until 2010 CE, technology progressed pretty much as it did in RL, at least on Earth. When the Sundering happened, most of the world was thrown out of whack. Tsunamis, supervolcanoes, earthquakes, floods, all the good stuff. Part of the devastation was the alteration of Earth's magnetosphere (among other things) and one of the side-effects was the deterioration of satellite orbits.

No satellites means no global communications, so in the centuries since, not all places advanced at the same pace. Some were thrown back to the (Dr.) Stone Age, while others managed to cling to some remnants of technology, but most were left somewhere in between. To make things even more chaotic, the newcomers had tech of their own (Avalon, for example, made some serious advancements in what most would consider steampunk tech).

Now, onto the main show.

Arcadia: Part 2 - Geopolitics

When the Sundering happened, Eastern Europe was already in crisis. Some countries were facing open conflict, while others were marred by social unrest, crumbling economies, or a combination of all the above. The natural disasters that followed only exacerbated the problems, causing country-wide devastation. One of the most notable examples was the eruption of Santorini's volcano that nearly destroyed what remained of the island, but forming a land-bridge connecting the western shores of Anatolia in Turkey to mainland Greece.

These natural disasters were followed by artificial ones, as numerous nuclear plants, primarily those in Belarus and the Ukraine, were damaged beyond repair and started failing one after the other. In most cases, they went out with a whimper, only causing minimum damage to the surrounding area. That, however, was not true for all. The ones that went out with a bang caused the land to break along borderlines and riverbeds, contaminating what remained of the terrain. As if the death toll was not already impressive, these events wiped out whole cities and most of the infrastructure.

In the midst of all this chaos, the armies of Arcadia poured out of the portals, claiming ground where they stood. Most of them were descendants of people from ages past, and modern borders meant little to them. As they spread out, they gave the locals a choice, "Surrender or leave". As anyone familiar with Eastern Europeans, if not most of humanity, can guess, the locals did not take kindly to the ultimatum. Many were those that took arms, doing their best to fight those they saw as invaders. For many of them, this was merely another would-be conqueror in a long list.

Not all, however, were filled with such patriotic fervor. Many were those that sought to join the invaders, offering money, land, even state secrets. A few of those offers were accepted, but in most cases the newcomers made these defections public. To the last, the men and women that tried to betray their country were publicly executed, in gruesome ways, by the very people they sought protection from. The list of traitors included most heads of state, many politicians from across the spectrum, along with several so-called pillars of society.

This brutal display served to help sway most of the local population in favour of the newcomers. By all accounts, they seemed to be doing a better job at running their territories, and there were several that wished to follow them in pursuit of some kind of nationalistic utopia.

In practice, things were not quite as rosy. Most of the newcomers had no grand dreams of large empires or reclaiming long forgotten lands. They wished to take back what they knew as their ancestral homes but little beyond that. As a result, what was already a fragmented landscape was reduced to a patchwork of city-states and protected settlements that were, at best, loosely affiliated in some vague notion of shared history and culture.

Over the centuries that followed, many of the larger city-states would begin to absorb their neighbours, or form alliances between them, and eventually a semblance of nations returned to the area. These new political entities solidified to a certain degree during World War 3, taking a somewhat more recognisable state to anyone familiar with life before the Sundering ...or long before it, in some cases.

The polities in question are the following (warning, this may trigger some people, do remember this is fiction, not RL):

* Kingdom of Dacia: Many would be surprised to find out that Magyarorszag (Hungary), Romania, and Moldova, have banded together under a single banner, and ...many would be right to think so. While Dacia is officially a Kingdom, disputes between the ruling class are as often and as intricate that they would make a Byzantine courtier envious. Thankfully, like most Arcadians, Dacians dislike their neighbours slightly more than they dislike their fellow citizens, so the tense balance remains.

* Grecian Diarchy: At first, reclaiming Anatolia seemed like a dream come true, but things were not so peachy for lil' ol' Hellas. With most of its islands destroyed or cut off, and much of its territory reclaimed by nature, the country was left with only a fraction of its usable land. As one would expect from its people, it didn't take long for local disputes to flare up. Technically ruled by a king in Athens, the last few years speak of an opposition growing in the north, threatening to rekindle old hatreds.

* Scythian Territories: Devastated as they were from the after effects of the Sundering, Belarus and Ukraniya found it more prudent to band together in order to survive. Not willing to surrender their sovereignty to each other, each land is ruled by a council of semi-nomadic tribes. Life is hard in the Scythian Territories and conflicts between the different tribes do not make things easier. Too stubborn to move to greener pastures, or perhaps unaware they exist, Scythians try to make their best on a wounded land.

* Kingdom of Slavia: If there ever was a manifestation of a free-for-all on a country-wide scale, it would be the territory now known as the Slavia. The name itself has been contested by many, including those in Bulgaria and Illyria, the two main components of it. Just as disputed is which old polity belongs to each of them, with several of them changing hands every couple of decades. Despite all that, Slavians (not to be confused with Slavs, even though there is some overlap) get along with each other slightly better than they do with others.

* Kingdom of Wendia: The northwesternmost territory of Arcadia, covering what used to be Poland (now going by Polska even internationally) as well as Czech Republic and Slovakia (united once more, under the name Czechia). Due to their proximity to the neutral Baltic States and the eastern border of what remains of the European Union, Wendians are no strangers to war. Unlike other Arcadians, their main conflicts are from outside their own borders rather than internal disputes.

A bit of info (3 of 3):

@NoobX: I can neither confirm nor deny that.

Arcadia: Part 3 - Solun

When the Sundering happened, Thessaloniki was a city of half a million souls, almost half of them students in the local universities. The devastation caused by the earthquakes brought down all the buildings that had survived the one forty years prior and most of those that had been built since. The only structures that were left standing were the old Roman and Byzantine ruins, remnants of the city's former glory.

These ruins formed the foundation of the city's rebirth in the decades that followed, especially as people from the surrounding areas flocked to the relative safety in greater numbers. While most of the original population had been killed during the Sundering, or shortly after, the city became home to all that could reach it, human or otherwise. Free from any established form of governance, the locals had to find new ways to support one another.

The Mithbari refugees had their own leaders and hierarchies to fall back to, but for the humans that remained, the solution came in the form of the many sports clubs that were prominent in the city before the Sundering. Already a source of identity, they gave rise to community leaders that were sorely needed. At first, they operated as little more than gangs, but over time they developed into something more, and the truth about their origin was lost to time... unlike their rivalry.

As the city grew - initially under the name "Solun", which is what most nearby foreigners called it before the Sundering - it would come to take the form of a crescent along the coast with four distinct baileys forming around the city's old boroughs. These baileys are each ruled by one of the guilds, and are coloured by their permeating presence.

The western bailey takes about one-third of the city's footprint, with houses to the east, and all manners of industry and farming toward the outskirts. Ruled by the Sons of Heracles, it's home to the city's crafters and farmers. Of note, is the round arena/theatre that can be found there, between the residential and industrial quarters.

The eastern bailey, takes about one-fifth of the city, and is home to artists and sailors. One of the most pleasant parts of the city, it holds many larger estates, as well as the city's stadium along the western border of the bailey. Notable for its vibrant nightlife and numerous art venues, it's ruled by the Sons of Apollo, and serves as the city's secondary port, used by recreational and fishing vessels.

The south bailey, taking the majority of the remaining area, is the heart of the city and home to the militant Sons of Ares. The 'white' tower down by the water, serves as the headquarters of the local Wardens, while the old cathedral serves as headquarters for the local Gardeners. Remnants of the old infrastructure can be seen across the bailey, with the main docks, and parks, hospitals, churches, or the odd campus structure peppering the landscape.

The north bailey, smallest of the four, stands on the hill overlooking the city, and is built around the ancient castles found there. Home to the group calling themselves "Citizens" - but derogatorily referred to as "Baoki" by the rest - it is where most of the city's scholars, and nobles can be found. Claiming an inordinate number of cafes, even by local standards, it provides the iconic look for the city, blending all its history together.

...at least this is how things used to be until a few years ago. Rumours of the city undergoing a radical change spread quickly, as well as the fact it reclaimed its historical name - while "Solun" was now used for the area surrounding it.
