There was just too much going on. The revelations about void beasts, some heated argument Scav seemed to be having with the Egyptian lady, the strange portal to another world with the chilling mist coming out of it, the newcomers who came out of it, the different reactions everyone had to the portal... Tarkas tried to notice as much of it all as he could, but in the end he needed to focus on one thing, so he chose the most pressing matter of all.

He walked to the newcomer lounging at the table.

"Umm... excuse me, miss? Don't you think it's too early in the day to be drinking so heavily?"

Ivana took another gulp before she turned to the man. At first, she gave him a sharp look. Then she scanned him from head to toe. The thief let out a shrug as she rolled her eyes. The problem still stayed. She looked away from the man then to the gardens and got herself in deep thought. Communication, she reminded herself, was important. Ivana took another sip from the bottle then turned back to the man. She swayed and pointed her free hand near her ear. Hoping that it might give him a clue of what she'd wanted to tell him, along with it, she spoke, "I cannot understand you."

The woman pointed to hear ear and mumbled something incomprehensible. She was obviously deaf or at least hard of hearing. Well, that was no reason to avoid a perfectly good conversation. Tarkas answered as loudly as he could without actually shouting, gesturing energetically as he talked.

"I (placing a hand on his chest) am Epitheus Tarkas! You (pointing a finger at her) are drinking (raising his fist with his thumb out and shaking it from above in the direction of his mouth) too much! It's still early in the morning(pointing at the still rising sun)!"

The girl wasn’t able to speak a lick of a proper language, was she? Well that was going to make coordinating with her difficult. Maybe he could work together with her ex-boyfriend with the fancy cane to come up with a handful of useful gestures to get things across quickly and easily-

Then Tarkas begins shouting.

Simon’s face drops down into one of his hands, and with a groan he mumbles, “Okay. Some of us got lucky.”

Cyrus steps out of the portal, making sure to keep his eyes on the woman in front of him. Hearing the portal fizzle out he allows his hackles to sag. Exhaustion clawed at him. He rubbed at his temples, trying to massage away the growing migraine that was blossoming behind his eyes. As if that would work, as if it ever worked. He sighed heavily, letting his arms drop to his side.

He shrugged his shoulders and shook his arms out, trying to dispel the rest of the energy in his system. There was nothing he could do about the pain, but the residual buildup was a lot easier to get out of his system. That was a lot easier than his last jump, but it was still difficult and not something he enjoyed doing. It always made his tongue feel too large for his mouth and like he gargled nails.

Coming out of his mild oblivious trance, he realized that everyone was staring at him and Ivana. Cyrus adjusted his hood and cloak, trying to hide his entire being underneath the scaled cloak, hunching over.

The lasting attention and focus on him was agitating him further. He was about to snap at everyone and tell them to go stuff something sharp and prickly up whatever orifice they could, when Ivana stormed off towards the table. Cyrus watched her grab a bottle off the table, sniff it, and then start drinking from it. He rolled his eyes and immediately regretted the action as the pain behind his eyes graduated from needles in his brain to full on buzzsaw cutting his brain into confetti.

Again, he was about to say something, when a very loud stream of thoughts echoed through his mind. Loud enough that his migraine intensified as a result. "Did she cause you much trouble?" Cyrus' head snapped away from Ivana towards the group of people. It was coming from the bald man. The one he had to collect earlier. A quick perusal of his mind identified him as Vosh.

Cyrus' silver eyes narrow in irritation. Seems like she has finally stopped running. She found her brain it seems." Cyrus spoke within Vosh's mind. He then proceeded to mentally nudge Vosh, "now stop thinking so loud. It's irritating"

Then someone was speaking. The one with blonde hair. Cyrus glared at him. "I didn't get in any trouble," Cyrus points a finger at Ivana, "she was the one that caused it all."

His attention was diverted by the one with the too-bright mind going over to Ivana and worryingly asking her if she thought it was too early to be drinking. Cyrus closes his eyes, he takes a very deep breath. Ivana gives her answer and Cyrus assumed that would be the end of it. That is, until Tarkas starts to shout at her. His eyebrow twitches in irritation. His self control shatters like a glass pane. Cyrus storms over to Ivana and Tarkas. He grabs Tarkas and shakes him a little.

"Stop yelling! She doesn't speak the language, she doesn't understand a word you are saying! SO STOP F******* YELLING!" Cyrus lets go of Tarkas and wheels around to look at Ivana. "And you, give me that!" He snatches the bottle from her and turns to look at Tarkas again. "No it's not too early to be drinking!"

Cyrus puts the bottle to his lips and tilts his head back. He chugs the bottle, not even caring about the taste. He leans back more to increase the speed of his drinking. His hood slides back, and messy ginger hair spills out from underneath. He finishes the bottle and stands upright again. He wipes the excess from his lips with the back of his hand and sets the bottle back down on the table. He blows an errant strand of hair out of his face only for two more to fall into his eyes. He brushes the strands from his face and pulls his hood back up with the other hand.

Becoming intoxicated was a very faint worry for him. His augmented physiology nullified the ethanol, faster than he could consume it. Unless of course, he was drinking something that was at the very least 75% alcohol.

Ivana closely watched the man's gesture. When he was finished, the thief gave the man a very, very sharp look. It seemed that she understood him. Slowly, she raised her hand in a closed fist, close to the man's face then extended her middle finger then quickly held it down and turned away from him.

She continued to chug the wine, almost consuming what's left. She said shaking her head, "Nobody mess with me when I drink!" then gestured the man to go away without looking at him.

Archon's manor, Thessaloniki, Solun Region

"ENOUGH!"

The word was not so much spoken as it was blasted directly to the mind of everyone present. Along with the mental assault, the witch's voice thundered across the atrium, shattering glass. It was no longer a single voice, but several harmonising together.

Her eyes were ablaze now, purple flames leaking and casting her now chalk-white face in an eerie light. Suddenly, a shimmering dome formed around the manor, barely visible for a few moments before it faded away. Even those not mystically inclined could feel a charge in the air.

She raised a hand and one of the tables unravelled, the metal quickly wrapping itself around Ivana, immobilising the thief. She pulled her arms and legs close, narrowing her eyes at the woman. When she spoke, everyone understood her words, regardless of their native tongue.

"Your foolishness endangered my children. Do it again and I will snuff you out."

She then snapped her gaze to Tarkas about to say something when the archon placed a hand on her shoulder. With him were the twins, clinging to his legs, clearly scared by the whole ordeal. He gave a light squeeze.

"It's over. We are all safe."

He met her gaze for a few moments, then she just ...turned off, her appearance quickly changing back to human, before she offered a quiet word to him and leaned down to pick one of the twins in her arms with the other moving to her side now.

The archon would then turn to those present, pushing his presence out to draw the attention of those that were not looking his way. As he spoke, his words would reach each person in their native tongue, as if translated in the air between them.

"This unfortunate incident aside, it appears that we were correct to gather you here. You have the skills needed to help us all survive what is coming."

He turned to Cyrus first, letting him have a good sip before speaking. "Corina explained your situation to me. You have nothing to worry about among us." As he said that, the woman in question seemed to just ...slide next to Cyrus, having slipped into the scene when no one was watching. There were traces of blood on her silks.

His eyes then fell on Tarkas and Simon, offering a faint smile. "You two performed admirably, though there is a lot of polishing to be done with your skills. We will get on that later. You will not like me much before your training is over."

He then quickly turned his attention to the Idurati princess. "The same goes for you, Alexia. You can forget your pampered life until I'm done with you. Quite frankly, you were utterly useless in this fight." He gestured toward the dark-skinned man with his head "Which is more than I can say about that guy."

He did not wait for her to respond and turned his attention to Scav, nodding a bit. "For a mundane, you held your ground. Your knowledge will be invaluable in the coming days. There are people I want you to meet." His eyes then turned to Vosh in the distance. "The same goes for you."

He paused, then looked around slowly before speaking again. "...of course, that is provided you do not wish to go out on your own, and take your chances with the voidborn when they return... and they will return. Here or wherever some of you came from."

He looked at each for a moment before turning to the witch. "Selene, if you please..."

She gave the faintest of nods, then a wave spread out from her across the atrium, restoring everything to how it was before the attack. Matter itself seemed to move to where it was supposed to be simply because she willed it so. Even the clothes and equipment of those present just snapped back to mint condition.

Once she was done, he nodded slightly, then looked around. "Now... how about we all sit and talk about what needs to be done like adults?" He gestured to the breakfast tables.

When the Witch transformed, Simon could see it was time for him to not be the one she looked at next and he slowly slid closer to a corner of the room to make sure the braggart was the one Selene would look at next. The timely intervention of the archon kept the 'guard' from looking for a window to hop out of in case things went really south.

Still, the rougish wampyri would look at the archon warily, and then say, "Well, you still need to tell us what the job is before we agree to join you on it and become your squires instead of your guests, Archon. But you don't need to worry about me resenting you. Liking my teachers has never been a prerequisite to learning from them." A mocking caw sounded in his mind at that statement before the presence once again faded. He would then walk over to his original spot where the archon had invited him to sit, take a chair, and look at the plate filled with food.

Ah.

Perfect.

Exactly what one needed after stabbing a monstrosity from beyond time and space to death; Coffee and bacon. After taking a sip, he asks, "So then, I'm assuming the job involves finding the bridge where these things are coming from and destroying it, or sealing it, or some such project?"

Tarkas marveled at the powers of the witch. This was the stuff of legends. And where there is stuff of legends, new legends are bound to be made. Legends that will speak of his heroic exploits. He smiled and moved to stand next to Scav.

"See, partner? I told you your knowledge is amazing and the archon agrees." He whispered encouragingly, "You're gonna do great."

Tarkas then turned to the archon himself.

"I eagerly await your training. Nature talent is very important, but without honing it will just go to waste. And I see no reason why I should hate you for it, sir. I believe that people can act with civility and politeness no matter what."

As he said the last sentence, the former watchman looked pointedly at the two who came from the portal.

Selene's outburst made Cyrus recoil. He stumbled backward a few steps as her voice screamed out inside his mind. One hand clutched at his head, eyes squeezed shut. His mind was ringing now, or was that his ears? The pain..... the pain was awful. So much so that it was interfering with his ability to breathe.

It was only after the Archon had calmed her down that the ringing in his mind calmed down and he could breath again. When did he end up kneeling? God, his mind felt like static. Nothing but black and white buzzing blurring his ability to read anyone thoughts.

Her ability to slip past his mental shields was becoming tiresome, and was seriously pissing him off. Had he been in better condition, rested, and not in pain, he would've taught her a real lesson about mental attacks. For now he simply let his irritation bleed off of him, knowing that Selene would be able to at least pick up on it. If not, the glare he was leveling at her would get his point across.

Slowly Cyrus stood up, ignoring the wobble in his knees to try and maintain some visage of strength. That was when he noticed Ivana was tied to her chair with metal bonds. The corner of his mouth twitched with satisfaction. If she somehow gets out of that I am stabbing her in the leg Cyrus thinks viciously.

The Archon was speaking to him, and that was when Cyrus realized Corina was standing next to her. When did she get there? Her sudden appearance unsettled Cyrus more than anything that had happened these past few days. Her almost, reflective mind, was a source of anxiety for him. He didn't like having blind spots. Blind spots meant exploitable weaknesses. Weakness meant death. He wasn't supposed to have weaknesses. The Institute had bred, beat, or conditioned them out of him.

They did a lousy job Cyrus thinks bitterly.

He turns back to the Archon, who was now inviting everyone to sit down and talk. His irritation flared up again. Why didn't they understand? Were they that stupid? Or was it arrogance? Maybe a mix of both? His anger was boiling over now. Anger and anxiety. They were so assured of their own safety, so naive. Just like he was back then. Wide-eyed and stupidly innocent. This couldn't stand.

Cyrus walks up to the Archon, standing in front of the man, who Cyrus now realizes had several inches on him in height. He made sure to look the Archon in the eye, even though it made him want to shrink in on himself. The man needed to understand.

"I really don't think you understand the gravity of my being here. Me being here is dangerous. It's why I ran for so long. I may be powerful, but I escaped by the skin of my teeth. The place...." Bile rose up in his throat as unwanted memories surface. Cyrus shoved them away and focused on the conversation. Just concentrate on your breathing.

"The place I escaped from makes what Selene can do look absolutely infantile. They have so many horrors and monstrosities sealed away inside, and they don't just have one of each, they have hundreds. I am the only thing to have escaped from that place in over a century and I half! What I can do? I am mid-tier at best! I am no where near the strongest thing they have created! And they don't take kindly to their property escaping! That's why I am running, I am only here because I made a deal for my freedom."

Cyrus shakes his head as more unwanted memories flood to the surface. Screaming, blood, mangled corpses. He shakes his head again. They need to understand. "They don't just start wars and sell powerful living weapons. The harvest people. Take you captive, tear you open while you are awake just to see what will make you tick! Every shred of muscle and sinew, every bone, examined! Then they piece you back together and throw you into whatever sick tests they can think of and watch how you respond and react. They study you like a rat in a cage!" Cyrus was hysterical now, seemingly not even aware of the tears running down his face.

"I escaped. I alone escaped. They are after me. They will never stop hunting me. So stop saying that I am safe here because I am not! I will never be free!" Cyrus collapses to his knees. Painful and traumatic memories flooding to the surface. Having to drag Ivana back here and then the Witch's outburst had seriously weakened his ability to deal with his own trauma.

He inhales deeply. Screwing his eyes shut and taking a deep breath. He balls his hands into fists. Focus. Memories all have a spot in your mind. Put them in the right spot. Slowly he grabbed the errant memories and slide them back into the neat little slots they had escaped from. Slowly, he put himself back together after falling apart in front of strangers. If he wasn't so tired he would have been mortified. No matter, he can always wipe the memory of this event from everyone's mind. God, he was so tired.

The rude hooded man spoke again, this time addressing the archon. At first Tarkas was a bit appalled at his tone, but as the man kept talking the would-be hero found himself getting excited. The origins of the void beasts wasn't the only dark thing to investigate and stop. There was also the place that man came from! Heroic adventures were forming a line in front of Epitheus Tarkas!..

And then the angry man collapsed. Mentally at first and very much literally shortly after that. And suddenly, it wasn't exciting anymore. It was no longer an epic adventure. It was a very real and a very personal problem.

Tarkas walked carefully towards the man and put a hand on his shoulder.

"You're not really safe, you know. Heroes never are. Even if danger doesn't find us first, we'll go out of our way to find it instead. That's just our destiny. But heroes are not afraid of danger either. And if you can force yourself not to fear it, then you can face it. And if we will fight it together, then we will defeat it."

Words the hooded man spoke sparked Vosh's interest and imagination.  History and magic were not his sole interests, and listening to tales of mysterious places and even more mysterious practices was certainly something he'd indulge in if given the opportunity.  The hooded man, however, was not fond of the story he was telling, and witnessing the power he wields dissuaded Vosh from pressing the matter further.  Many questions arose in a short span of time, most of which would not be answered at that point.

Vosh moved over to the table the white-haired man from the arena suggested, and took a seat at the corner most distant from the others present.  He quickly glanced over the food but refrained from taking anything served.

Cyrus scoffed at Tarkas' words. "I am not a hero. The farthest thing from it actually."

He shrugged Tarkas' hand from his shoulder and stood up. The tears on his face were dry now. He sniffed and adjusted his scaled hood and cloak. Pulling the hood over more of his face, hiding it from the world. He wrapped the cloak around his body tightly, using it more like a blanket than a cloak.

He walked over to the table and stared down at the food. Trying to figure out if it was worth eating right now or not. His appetite was gone.

The power display that the witch showed left Ivana in awe. She stiffen at her seat for minutes, almost not wanting to move. She failed, once again in preserving her life butnyeah, she got lucky. The thief just looked down on the ground as she noted herself not to mess with the witch again. She also repeatedly told herself that any of them could be them and it's best to stay low. Though it's a puzzle to her why she got aggravated attention from the witch when she didn't partipated in opening the portal. She didn't even know if its possible given the circumstances!

When the Archon spoke,it was just the time she stood and followed his request. As she walked closer to the group, she heard the hooded man spoke. She listened carefully to his story and basing on what the man revealed, he is not the one she's trying to avoid. But still... she told herself, I must avoid him.

The thief found herself a seat and another bottle of wine to calm and entertain herself while she tries to participate unwilingly.

I'm never getting out of this sh*t until I do what they want, she told to herself.

Scav chuckled to himself as Selene wrangled in the conflict, glad none of her ire seemed to be directed at him. He had grown adept at making himself seen when the situation called for it and making himself invisible when needed, and this was certainly a case of the latter. Some people just didn't know how to keep their eyes down and heads cool, and he made a mental note that certain people in this party were too volatile to be relied on. He also noted those who could be relied on, if not necessarily trusted. Trust was not a luxury he could afford at the moment.

The archon spoke to him, breaking him from his thoughts. That would probably be a common occurrence now that he would be traveling with a team again. He smiled and nodded at the offer, saying he would like very much to have the opportunity to learn more. It seems the more he learned, the more he realized how little he knew, and that went double for this unfamiliar world and time.

Tarkas came over and encouraged him, a sorely unneeded but still appreciated gesture. He found himself growing used to the bright bulb, hardly even having to squint in the glare. Scav smiled genuinely at the man and thanked him for his words before retreating again into his own mind.

Perhaps over time he'd be able to trust the archon or his erstwhile shiny companion with his true predicament and, perhaps, make strides toward solving the problem that transported him here in the first place. And if it couldn't be solved, perhaps it could be understood. At this point he didn't even know what he didn't know, so he'd have to learn as much as he could as quickly as he could. This was the perfect opportunity.

He hoped the hunger didn't shine through his eyes as he sat at the table and prepared to listen to their hosts.

Archon's manor, Thessaloniki, Solun Region

The Archon moved to take a seat at the table, next to Selene and the twins. as he reached for his coffee, Corina would whisper something to him before slipping away. He nodded slightly in response, then turned to the princess.

"It seems that your guards were injured during the attack, though nothing to cause concern. Corina has already dealt with it. Their wounds can be addressed when we're done."

The princess blinked slowly, then barked a command at the dark-skinned man, who made himself scarce and moved to follow Corina. Alex took a sip of the iced drink before turning his attention to the rest, glancing at Cyrus for a moment and offering a bit of a smirk.

"No, you're not heroes... well, most of you anyway..." He glanced at Tarkas as he said that. "Each one of you is here because you are special in some way. And we will need every bit of special we need."

He watched Cyrus for a long moment. "If whoever is chasing you is half as dangerous as you claim, I genuinely hope they show up. Because what we're up against is even worse. Our foes know no fear, no hunger, no exhaustion. They destroy reality where they touch it. All they need is a big enough foothold. They will not stop to study you. They will just warp you into a weapon to be obliterated once you're no longer useful."

He glanced at Vosh and Ivana briefly. "Some of you come from different worlds, different... universes? multiverses?" He glanced at Selene for a moment, who nodded in confirmation. "The Voidborn are formed in the Void in-between... and they will stop at nothing to extinguish all our worlds."

"As to your question..." He looked at Simon and frowned a touch. "Nothing so glamorous, I'm afraid... our mission will be to stall for as long as necessary for the brains among us to even begin to find a solution. They will keep coming... and next time, it won't be just a couple of Void beasts."

He gestured to where the monstrosity had been earlier, behind where Scav now sat. "To put it in terms that you may begin to understand just how snowed we all are... If the Voidborn were an army, the thing we fought would be the scrawny little stray puppy that sneaked into the camp." He took another sip, then glanced among them once more.

"The best we can hope for is to slow their attacks enough that these strays are the only thing we end up fighting. But I tell you this... it will get worse before we're there." He reached for a bite now, offering a light grin. "In the meantime, you'll all be provided with food, shelter, and a decent pay"

Ivana had her elbow on the table, propping up her chin. She listened to the man as he spoke while taking shots from the bottle. The thief somehow felt good that finally, she someone spoke her language except for Vosh. From his attire and actions, it gave Ivana the impression that he's some kind of lord of the place. Apparently, what he had said didn't give her any delight since it will hinder from going back home for a while. Moreover, it will put her life in danger which she was trying to avoid.

Oh for f***ing sake! Ivana lamented.

Bored and afraid, she observed each persona. Ivana forewarned herself of the two - the guy that went with her in the portal and the white-haired female. Surely, she did not want to mess with them in the future. The others, she reminded herself to be wary of. When her eyes landed at Vosh, she gritted her teeth and silently cursed him in many ways imaginable.

Now, this is a paradox...

Vosh listened, took a moment to process the relayed information and, seeing that no one was willing to break the silence on the "guests'" end, decided to stand and speak up, but unlike previously, he was now speaking fluently: "In my years of studying and researching, never have I encountered creatures such as these, if you'd even dare call them such.  Now, while I am certain that you'd try and paint them in such light as to make us not underestimate their strength, I am of belief that every foe can be fought, if not to a victory, then at least to a draw.  However, setting that aside, I would like to turn to more pressing questions, just to clear up any misunderstandings and confusion.  First of all, how come you know so much about us?  Second, how come you know so much of these... Voidborn?  I believe I need not elaborate on why I find these questions so troubling."

Simon nodded along as first the Archon, and then Vosh, and he chimed in to ask, "Alright, stalling maneuver then. So how did this one get summoned here? If these are just the scouts, and they weren't able to get here before, then something must have been done to allow them to enter our world."

The meeting seemed to be winding down. The excitement was gone. People started to either lose interest or ask questions. Yet something was bothering Tarkas. He just couldn't put his finger on what it was...

"We do need more information. We were lucky that the Void beast appeared here where we could fight it. If it had appeared in the streets of the city, it would WHAT DO YOU MEAN FROM OTHER MULTIVERSES?!"
