Tarkas watched Alexia go with a confused expression for a moment, before finally walking up to Scav and the archon.

"Epitheus! Ah good... you made it. I take it the princess will not be joining us?"

Tarkas answered uncharacteristically slowly, as if pondering something.

"Was she supposed to, sir? I can go get her if you wish, but..." He glanced back again and finally shook off whatever was going on with him returning to his more usual rapid fire speech, "I believe she needs a little private time. She was very agitated. To be fair there was a lot of that going on just now. Must be all that new information lady Selene blessed us with. It will take them a while to process it. She'll come around. They all will. In the meantime, how can I be of service?"

Scav shook his head, amused and bemused in equal measure. How could one man be so simple yet so unpredictable? He'd have to ponder this riddle once he found time alone to think. Add it to the list. "Heh, well kid. I imagine you'll help her release some of that steam one way or another. For now, I think we best be on our way. Looks like this party is over."

"Takes one to know one... and you did not answer all my questions. You missed two."

Cyrus would merely grunt in response to her.

He followed Corina into the subway car. Picking a spot in the corner, flopping down onto the plush cushions, bouncing slightly. His armour and cloak rattled slightly, knives clinking against his thighs. He stretched out across the seats, feet crossed. He crossed his arms and leaned back, closing his eyes. Basking in the soft and supple support.

Such creature comforts were rare in his life. Comfort was foreign to him. Hard to lounge around and relax when he was constantly looking over his shoulder. Running from his past. Best to enjoy the comforts whenever he can get them.

"I do not know what Stockholm Syndrome is, but I serve because I owe my life to them. Had they not been merciful, I would have died the moment I failed to assassinate Mistress."

"Stockholm Syndrome it is then."

"Master is not so shallow as to care about what my attire is. He usually looks a bit deeper. Mistress, on the other hand..."

"Yes. Selene is a bit..... much." A memory of the mission he was on with the Pleasure-Shapers crystallized in his mind, writhing bodies and wanton moans. He pushed it away, he really didn't want to remember those memories in the current company. While Selene shared similarities to them—mainly her taste of attire—he had a feeling that she was vastly better than those nymphomaniacs.

He opened one eye to study Corina. Watching her reaction to his words. "I can only assume that you followed me either on order from your masters like the good little slave you are." He sneered. "Or for some unknown reason you are interested in me."

Archon's manor, Thessaloniki, Solun Region

---Library---

Vosh would be free of distractions while he poured over the various books, parchments, and scrolls. One of the servant girls would show up at regular intervals, making sure he has food or drink if he requires it but he would otherwise be left to his own devices.

---Indoors---

"I cannot."

Selene's response to Ivana was fairly straightforward. The witch had now taken her human guise once more, that of the haughty blonde. She would step into what looked like a study, before moving to take a seat in a tall chair.

"Unlike the archon, my patience is limited... and few things erode it faster than people with no ambition or self-awareness. You claim you lack the skills to be of any use in this war. You are sorely mistaken and your goals are insultingly low."

She crossed her legs, then leaned forth a bit, watching the thief with a piercing gaze. She perked a brow before speaking again.

"Or are you implying that my assessment of you is wrong and I am blind to your true potential?"

Meanwhile, Simon would get a chance to appreciate the decoration in the hallways. If he was any judge of character, it was highly unlikely that the archon was responsible for any of it. The style was too refined, too Avalonian, too ...classy. This, oddly enough, extended even to the more risque pieces, though he could say with some certainty that Alexander was not averse to those.

---Subway---

Corina would offer a soft smile at Cyrus, reclining as well in the seat and propping her head up with her hand. She watched the man for a few moments before speaking.

"I could be mistaken, of course, but I believe you and I are far more alike than you imagine... I found a home here, I'd like for you to do the same."

---Atrium---

Alexander would chuckle at what Tarkas said, shaking his head as he put an arm around the man's shoulder.

"One of these days we will need to have a talk... for now, just be glad you are in one piece after what you just pulled."

He then turned to Scav and nodded, switching to English.

"Let's... and you need to learn the local tongue better. It will make your life much easier. Mine too..."

He would simply scoff at Corina. "Why? So I can be subservient to two people who partake in slavery? To a woman who has no concept of privacy and dubious manners to say the least? No thanks. I escaped a life of servitude. I have no intention of going back."

Cyrus would then turn to look at Corina, coming out of his recline and leaning forward. His face darkened significantly, eyes narrowing dangerously, lips turning into a deep snarl. Bright neon blue and pink energy crackled across a few parts of his black scale armour, popping in the silence of the subway car. Silver eyes seemed to glow from within with the same colours. His pupils had gone from their default oval shape, to a narrow slit.

"Don't ever talk about family again. I don't need a replacement." He spoke slowly. Making sure that his meaning was gotten across.

And just as quickly as it happened, it was over. Cyrus was back to leaning against the seat and was staring out the window. Relaxed and calm. His hackles lowered and his fur laying flat as it were. It was as if the past exchange hadn't even happened. Like he wasn't two seconds away from smearing Corina's insides across the inside of the cabin.

The only thing that betrayed his agitation was the subtle shifting of neon energy behind his eyes. Eyes glowing from within.

Peculiar that the archon had given all of his decorating decisions to Selene, but, well, the witch was clearly quite the compelling woman. And besides, her taste in art, with its Avalonian and often heroic or epic depictions of historical and mythological events and individuals was truly pleasing to the eye. And she'd mixed enough soft-core pornographic material in there to please her... consort? Lover? Husband? Ritually bound and blood tied werewolf snuggle blanket? He really didn't know the relationship between the witch and archon all that well, on reflection, which is something he should fix before he accidentally insulted them.

But still, the amount of borderline smut among the art being displayed was somewhat telling. It wasn't uncommon among the rich and powerful, to be fair, who often flaunted sex in their private spaces as a demonstration of power and status ("Look what I can get away with despite the PRUDES in the temples,") but still telling none the less. And ooooo, the Avalonian writing on the frames had the artist's signatures and the date that they'd been commissioned, some of them even the name of the piece and province they'd been drawn in. Now that was fancy. He should do a bit of research and see which of these pieces might hold the most status to a collector-

Wait.

No.

He was supposed to be rejoining the party going into town. Not faffing about all day looking at art that he'd have plenty of time to appreciate soon. Rubbing at his own face, the wampyri shook his head and went to find a servant to ask which direction the Archon had left the manor just yet, and if he had which direction his host had gone.

Corina watched Cyrus for a long moment before speaking. She did not move from her spot, however, reclined and clearly relaxed as she was. "I spoke of a home, not family... though I am sure they would be welcome here as well." She idly traced her fingers on the seat as she kept her eyes on him.

"You seem to have certain ...misconceptions about life here." She smiled a touch. "You either serve or you are served. Sometimes both. Precious few can afford not to." She let her eyes roam over him for a brief moment as if assessing him. "Perhaps you'll be one of them..."

---Subway Entrance---

Alexander would lead the small group outside the front gate of the manor, and toward a flight of stairs heading down. Simon would be able to spot them even without the servant girl pointing the way. The archon would turn toward Scav speaking in English as before.

"Most of our guests come from places where the peak of technology is the trebuchet. You know better and that makes you rather valuable." He grinned slightly, showing a bit of fang in the process. "And soon you'll have the chance to meet people that understand you a bit better."

As the archon mentioned learning the local tongue, Scav flashed back to his days in the Wastes. People from all over had come seeking his services, speaking every language under the sun. But he'd grown reliant on his allies to sell and negotiate in times where he did not understand, not having room in his brain for something beyond the next delve. It had tied him more closely to those around him, making him need them as much as they needed him. At least that was always how he'd rationalized avoiding other tongues. Now confronted with the reality, it stared him in the face and shouted 'lazy fool!' But he could not dwell, not now.

"I suppose. It's difficult to teach an old dog new tricks, and by sheer span of life..." Scav paused, then recalibrated to avoid revealing too much. "I'm up there among the oldest. At least I was in my more mundane circles. Here in the magical multiverse, I'm not so sure anymore." He was usually more careful than this; perhaps some part of him wanted to unburden among the two people he trusted most in this world. But that trust was merely ahead relative to what little trust he could muster for this new and alien environment, especially as it grew more fantastical and unfamiliar by the moment. No, he'd carried burdens before, and he'd continue to shoulder this one alone until he had a compelling reason to do otherwise. At least the mind readers either weren't paying attention or didn't care. After all, his mind was perhaps the only resource he could lay stake to, and he wasn't about to stop tapping it.

Alex continued speaking, saying Scav's knowledge of technology was rare in this world. The archon didn't ask if there were others where he'd come from, which was strange if his sort of knowledge was such a rare commodity. Perhaps he assumed Scav had acquired his knowledge purely as a lone wolf wanderer, perhaps he already knew Scav's secret and was merely keeping it concealed, perhaps he merely didn't think there could be more of him. Whether assumption, discretion, or oversight, Scav was glad not to have to skirt along things best left in the dark for now.

And then the promise of people that understood him better came to light, and Scav began questioning his own assumptions. Perhaps his place was not to be the front lines with the firethrowers, but in a workshop disassembling and reassembling the old world technology he'd grown to cherish. He certainly wouldn't complain at avoiding the greatest danger, if the danger could indeed be avoided. There was still Alex's promise of training, of course, which threw a wrench in the assumption anyway. He'd just have to be comfortable not knowing for now, as the future would reveal itself in its own time.

"Yes, I would love to be among 'my people,' so to speak. Would help me get me head screwed on straight. Thing is, technical knowhow can be taught. What steps are we taking to spread my sort of knowledge to those interested to learn?" The less of this world's burden that lay squarely on his shoulders, the better. The trio walked down a long flight of stairs leading underground, but only when they reached the bottom did Scav realize they were headed into a subway station instead of an elaborate maze of catacombs or the like. "Although, it appears the citizens of your fine city may already have some passing acquaintance with post-trebuchet technology already," he said with a chuckle. "Should make it easier to upsell adoption of other technologies when the time comes."

"But I'm guessing our friend here doesn't speak English. I wouldn't be insulted if you got him up-to-speed. I'll just mull about in my head a bit until I hear a word I recognize."

"Home is where your family is."

Staring—more like glaring if I am being honest—at the seat across from him, the anger bled from his system quickly. With the anger gone, all that was left was an empty feeling. He was too frayed right now, too jittery. Off-centered and unbalanced. When was the last time he had had the chance to sit and check in with his own mind, do some housekeeping and tidy up in there, repair his walls? Given the current state of his shields he'd put the length he'd gone without proper care and maintenance at about five months. He can hear Regina scolding him for slacking on his self-care. Like she was sitting right across from him in her chair. The thought brought a small smile to his lips, although he immediately schooled his features into something more aloof and disinterested.

Cyrus contemplated his traveling companion. Corina... Corina, Corina, Corina. Truth be told he had no idea what to make of her. Or why she was so interested in him. That's a lie. He did, he just liked to ignore it. Looking at her and seeing himself reflected back left acid in the back of his throat. They were indeed alike, she was right about that. Perceptive. It was easy to see why the Witch and Archon were so fond of her.

As for her interest in him, well, it was easy to see the similarities between them if you knew where to look. He may not know her full story, but he knew enough to see the experiences that connected them. Like red string on a cork board. Complete with all the brass fastenings and newspaper cutouts.

It had hurt. Hurt to see what he had had not five months ago thrown back into his face. Happiness. Stability. Peace. Seeing himself so distinctly and flawlessly depicted like a mirror.... it had cut deep. Deeper than he would admit. And it stoked the rage inside him. The rage at the Institute. Rage at everything they had done to him. What they had taken. Who they had taken. That festering rage, poisonous and vile, coupled with his fraying and crumbling shields had made him volatile. Being on the run for five months, and his traumas gnawing at his mind like ravenous dogs had done a number on him.

He had managed to cobble together a flimsy shield, but it was like a cotton sheet against a storm. It wouldn't last long, but it would hold for now. Long enough for him to apologize. He had a lot of people to apologize to. But that was for later. For when his shields were ironclad and sturdy.

Shifting a bit he looked at Corina, staring at her jaw more than her face. "I apologize. You did not deserve that. I am...." How much could he trust her with? Could he trust her? Was it worth it? She had been nothing but patient with him, soft. Softer than he deserved. Especially from someone he had been such an ass to. The reasons she had been kept by her masters were becoming even more clear.

"Raw." He settled for skirting the truth. Just like he always did. Half truths and small lies. "I admit, you did not find me at my best." He chewed on his lip for a moment, "still, that is not an excuse for my behaviour. Especially when you have been nothing but kind, and I, an a******."

He shifted again, squirming in his seat. She was staring at him. Patient as ever. Waiting. "When you mentioned family, it-" How far did he dare go? "Reminded me of what had been....." What was the word. Missing implied he had lost it and could not find it. Which certainly wasn't true. Not when it came to them. "Displaced. Some five months ago."

Shifting again, looking away from her jaw and down at his hands. He opened and closed them a few times. Then brought a hand up to scratch at his nose. A beat and then his hands were resting over his chest, the feel of his necklace soothing him. His eyes flicked to Corina several times. She was still staring. His hand closed around the necklace under his shirt a fraction, pressing the metal into his skin.

Why did he trust her with so much? That was too much. Waaaay too much. He could always take the words back. Or rather, erase them from her mind.......

Simon gave the waitress a polite and grateful bow, because while it might have been easy to spot the entourage at that moment it was something he could easily have overlooked until they disappeared into the subway if he'd searched at random, and bade her farewell while making his way to join the group. It was always a good idea to be respectful to the house staff.

The wampyri didn't exactly run, he was well dressed and running would be entirely unbecoming (and ruffle his shirt up a bit), but he did put on a bit of hustle, his cloak billowing a bit at his passage and a bit of mist keeping his feet from actually touching the ground. Which, when he reached the steps, made it seem like he was almost gliding down them instead of stepping. As long as the subway hadn't left by the time he got there, he should be able to catch up...

This would be his first ride on a train. While his arrows were from a place which had the ability to spin high-tensile strength carbon fibers into something as hard as steel, his stay in that area hadn't lasted long. So while he might not be completely lost or blown away by the technology, he wasn't familiar to the point where it was mundane and there was still a bit of wonder in the function, design and speed of the machine he was soon to enter.

Ivana almost rolled her eyes upon hearing the witch's rejection of her request. She could not fathom that a strong person like her could not afford to send her back home.

It took a while before she spoke. The thief had carefully assessed the situation and of course, the hostess' intention. She could continue to beg or strike a deal with her but Ivana sensed that the white-haired lady would not accept the former. So this time, she told that truth.

"L-look," she stuttered again but boldly caught the witch's piercing gaze, "I'm dying to return home. I will do whatever it takes to get back there."

"If I help you with this war, can you promise to help me get back home?"

---Library---

As Vosh kept devouring the books, he would begin getting more of an understanding of the meaning behind the words. He still had a long way ahead, but at least he was no longer feeling as if Selene had been speaking in tongues during her presentation earlier.

---Subway Car---

Corina dismissed Cyrus with a wave of her hand. She did not shift from her position otherwise, just watching the man as they travelled toward the city.

"Apology not required. But yes, you are an snow." She smiled at that. "So... this family of yours, why not bring them over then? Are they still alive?"

---Subway Entrance---

The underground chamber they were now in was well lit but having little in common with pre-Sundering subway stations beyond the fundamentals. Plants were everywhere, while there were pedestals and displays with works of art.

Alexander grinned at Scav, starting down the stairs with him and Tarkas and gesturing to the former guard as he spoke to the scavenger still.

"...you'd be surprised. Most people are not aware this exists."

As he approached the parked car before them, it became evident that much of its exterior was covered in some kind of ivy-like plant. The doors opened smoothly as he approached, and he briefly switched back to the local tongue, seemingly talking to the air.

"Lana... I will need a flower here. One for Selene as well."

A vine would extend from the roof, with a small flower growing rapidly at the end of it. He reached out to pluck it off, then turned to offer it to Scav. As he did so, he saw Simon approaching and gestured the man to hurry.

"This will have to do for now. put it on."

---Study room---

"You are hearing my words, but you do not seem to comprehend them, little thief... so let's do something about that."

Selene leaned forth a bit and reached to touch Ivana on the forehead with a well-manicured nail. She gave a bit of a grin, then poked her ever so slightly before pulling back. Ivana would feel a sharp headache for a brief moment before everything went back to normal.

"I doubt you have anything worth going back for but... who am I to judge?" She smirked faintly. "You misunderstood, however... it's not that I do not wish to get you back, it is simply that it is not one of my abilities. Unlike you."

Selene paused as a vine pushed into the room through the half-opened window, forming a flower at the end and seemingly offering it to her. She sighed, then reached to take it, moving to put it behind one of her ears.

Tarkas, the archon and Scav were approaching a set of descending stairs. Thoughts raced through the watchman's mind.

Ah, so he's taking us to the dungeons. Interesting. I wonder what's in there? A secret training area? A portal to another place? Or... maybe things are much simpler. Maybe there's a prisoner there and we're going to Press Him For Information. Hmmm... I hope the archon doesn't resort to torture. That would be unethical and unseemly.

Meanwhile, the trio reached the bottom of the stairs and entered a room covered in plants and ivy. It was also very well lit, despite having no windows. At the far end of the room there was a ... carriage? As the archon approached it, the doors opened themselves as if by magic.

Tarkas looked around in wonder.

"What is this place? And how are we going to get horses down the stairs for the carriage?"

Scav looked around at the subway station, if it could even be called that, and marveled at its almost organic design. The flat and lifeless stone beneath the teeming green of the walls provided a stark contrast that he guessed had been cultivated, and perhaps in time the green would mask the grey completely. With the pedestals scattered about, this place looked more a museum than a subway station, and the typical sheen of grime in the stations he'd known was nowhere to be found. Clearly this was either not well-used or very well maintained. The archon confirmed it was at least in large part the former a moment later.

"Why not? Please excuse me for asking, but do you not want your people to have all the comforts and conveniences you can provide? You don't seem the type to place yourself on one of these pedestals while your people starve in the filth, so why is this place a secret?" But the archon had moved over to the car, which opened at his approach. He spoke a language Scav could not understand and a vine and flower sprouted from the ceiling in ultra fast motion, at least relative to other flowers. Alex plucked the flower and held it out to him. Curious about the gesture, Scav dropped his question for now. He'd have to take the measure of his host some other time.

"No thanks, not really my style," Scav said as he grinned, thinking he'd at least ascertained enough of the measure of this man to presume upon his good humor. The archon gave a wry smile and quipped back, "Would you prefer I woo you first?" Despite the jest, he did not move until Scav took the flower and pressed it gently into one of his duster's many pockets just under his hood. There was no reason to mistrust the archon, as he would not need to resort to deception to get whatever he wanted from a displaced and bedraggled scavenger. He waited to see if he could ascertain the purpose of the gift, then was about to ask when no answer availed itself to him when Tarkas finally spoke, asking the archon about horses for the carriage.

"Heh, well if this is anything like the carriages from back home, it runs on an entirely different sort of horsepower." Scav mentally slapped his forehead at the terrible joke no one would understand anyway, and then it dawned on him. "Hey, wait a minute. I can understand you again!"

The well-dressed wampyri hurried up indeed as the archon gestured for him to join them in the train car, Simon assuming that the device would be safe given Alex was willing to place himself within it. "Sorry for the delay. Figured it would be better if I changed out of the armor. Make fewer guards nervous that way." He slips in beside the other three men and nods, glancing about himself for a bit before locking his gaze on Scav. Wait... what the man was saying... that wasn't entirely unintelligible to the wampyri. It wasn't something he perfectly understood either, but it sounded kinda familiar at points. Blinking twice at that realization, Simon opened his mouth to ask a question.

The closing of the subway's door interrupted him, and he squints at that and the lights around them. In Avalonian, assuming that Alex would know that due to his relationship with Selene, Simon would ask the Archon, "So this machine is powered by..." Snapping a finger twice while trying to recall the word, he mutters, "Ozone... lightning... sparks- electric! Electricity, yes?" Having said that, he squints and mutters, "Never actually been inside a machine like that before..."

Alex would settle in one of the seats, leaning back and getting comfortable, before he addressed the three men. Unfortunately for Simon everything he said would be instantly translated to the rest. He grinned at his question, then nodded briefly, before looking at Scav.

"You two are both right... to a point. The car has some electrical components, sure... but no engine. Instead of horsepower, we rely on... Dryad."

As he said that, the car would start moving, much slower than a proper subway would but faster than most means of transportation available in this part of the world at this day and age. He turned his attention to Tarkas and smiled a bit.

"There is a lot that was lost, and we have not been able to recover most of it... some, however..."

He gestured around at the car. It looked very much like a carriage, more comfortable and luxurious than a subway car would normally be. It was large enough to seat about thirty people, though the seating reduced that number to a comfortable ten.

"Once we manage to create a proper engine, we may make this available to the public. Until then... consider it one of the perks of being a tyrant."

Still contemplating if erasing the past ten minutes from her mind was worth it or not, Cyrus shifted in his seat. Did he dare tell her anymore? He already felt exposed and bare. Naked as the day he was fished out of that damn pool. What did Regina say about this? That being vulnerable was a good thing? It felt more like exposing his neck to a sharp knife.

His hand came back to the necklace that laid beneath his shirt. The weight of it pressing into his skin had became a source of strength for him, a reminder. Comforting. The metal pulsed softly beneath his hand, a barely there thing. Like a whisper of the wind against your cheek. Proof that they were all alive. Alive and living somewhere out there. Safe. Least, he hoped they were.

Stopping his mind from going down a dark path of anxiety and needless what-ifs, he focused back on the conversation and the question Corina had asked him.

He reached into his shirt and fished the necklace out, allowing it to dangle from one armoured finger. Hanging from the necklace were six rings made of silver. Each ring had a thin band of pearlescent material that ran the center of the ring. It seemed to swirl and change colour, shifting and moving. Engraved in the silver were strange symbols, words in a language Corina would not be able to read.

His features softened as he stared at the necklace. A small smile appearing on his face. Tender and private. "I am somewhat in the same situation as your masters. Although, there are considerably less women involved. And it is more mutual."

Cyrus tucked the necklace back away beneath his shirt. Time to skirt the truth again. "Bring them here?" He spoke the worlds slowly, letting them sit in his mouth. "I don't know if they would like it here. It would be quite the culture shock to them. They're all spoiled princesses, used to their technology. Although I must confess the idea of them adjusting to this new life is quite an entertaining thought."

"As for their status.... they are alive. I did not misspeak when I said they had been displaced, although said displacement happened by my own hands."

He closed his eyes, the memory of that day flashing on the insides of his eyelids like a slideshow. A playback of one of the worst days of his life, supplied by his brain to drive the knife a little bit deeper into his heart. Torment him more. The happy little life he had built for himself being shattered by his creators. The moment he had to scatter his lovers across worlds to save them. Then the five months on the run as they chased him down.

Shaking his head he opened his eyes and stared back out the carriage window. He didn't even realize his hand coming up to rub at the rings underneath his shirt. A haunted look had crossed his features. Lost in thought

Simon's forehead creased as he began to visibly consider what the Archon had said, and, perhaps channeling his underdeveloped inner Tarkas, he would say, "I've... heard about ways to generate electricity, but I did not know that machines that moved because of it still used horses?" Much like the detailed workings of the multiverse, Simon had plenty of trivia in his head on the nature of more advanced technologies. He was hardly an expert and didn't know much of the terminology, though. "I thought the whole point of mechanical engines was to move objects too heavy to be transported by flesh, and faster than a body could carry it."

Tarkas was on the edge of his seat, taking in the interior of the car. He was looking out of the window when Simon spoke. The former watchman responded even before looking back.

"Oh now you're just being silly. Scav and the archon clearly meant something else when they used the term "horsepower", "he turned to the other wampyr and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder with a smile. "Don't worry though, your mistake is understandable. It requires a certain familiarity with equines to know that they won't be useful in an underground passage such this."

Tarkas placed his hand back on his knee and looked forward out of the window again.

"Now moles on the other hand, that's a different matter. Giant moles."

For just a moment, Simon is silent, gazing into the vast infinities that Tarkas' mind must surely reside within. And then he points out, "But it's not moles, the Archon just said that it's a dryad powered." Despite the calm serenity that seems to have overcome him, Simon's voice is still small, and there are layers of distress there that only the most adept telepath could find the true depths of.

Looking at Alex and Scav, a few things clicking into place because of Tarkas' words, he asks, "Is... is it... is it a measure of how many moles- horses! How many horses an engine is able to emulate? That's it, right?"

The near-Tarkas experience has left him in a daze. Simon will never recover.
