Scav blinked twice at the scene in front of him, thinking that surely the newcomer was messing with Tarkas while at the same time skirting toward thinking about how much space a mole of moles would take up (probably more space than is available in the universe) and how much manufacturers back before the Sundering missed out on getting to use higher numbers by measuring their engine in molepower (a lot). Afraid he was falling into Tarkas’ orbit again and not wanting to wilt his poor translation flower with the strained metaphor, he didn’t weigh in on the subject.

Instead, he changed it, primarily as a defense mechanism. “Y’know,” he said, looking in Simon’s direction, “I don’t believe we’ve had the pleasure. Name's Scav.” He extended a hand.

Subway, Thessaloniki, Solun Region

---First Car---

"People adjust to all manners of things far easier than most are willing to admit."

Corina responded as she finally moved to sit up and stand in one fluid motion. The car slowed down moments later, and she brushed her fingers against Cyrus' arm as she started for the door.

"Come, let's catch some sunlight."

They were now in a station similar to the one near the manor, though considerably less decorated. The familiar sway of hips and silk returned as she started up the stairs, finally pushing the large doors open with a gentle push.

Emerging from the shadows, it would almost feel as if Cyrus was peeking into the mind of a certain former watchman once more. Everything was bright ...at least for a few moments, before his eyes adjusted. Then, he would see colours everywhere, green most of all. That was to be expected, of course, as the entrance to the subway stood in one of the many parks of the city. A paved path led from it to the network that crossed the whole area, breaking the sea of green.

The area around them was covered in grass, while massive trees provided shade for those who needed it. There were dozens of people around, coming from all walks of life and civilised species. Fountains and benches were easy to spot, though most seemed to be taken at the moment. Several people were there with their canine companions, most normal dogs but a few two-headed orthros hounds among them.

---Second Car---

Alex looked between the three men and quietly said something in Avalonian that would not be translated to the others. Those familiar with the language would easily identify it as a quick apology. He looked between the three again, then scratched his chin while pondering Tarkas' suggestion.

Giant moles. Right. Well... okay, no. Not now, anyway...

---Meanwhile, back at the manor---

Selene removed the flower from her hair, staring it at in disbelief for several moments before she said something that went untranslated and put it back on, turning her attention back to the woman with her.

---Back at the Second Car---

The archon would turn to Simon, patting his arm with an understanding look and nodding reassuringly. His guess was correct after all, despite the shock. He then turned to Scav and grinned a touch.

"You know... I am almost tempted to only give the people partial technology and see how they try to fill the gaps."

Cyrus looked down at the spot on his arm Corina had brushed against in passing. The gentle touch enough to bring him out of his trance. He rubbed at the spot as he stood up. He followed Corina silently, lost in his own head again.

The train ride had left him feeling untethered. He hadn't really had time to sit down and confront everything that had happened to him in the past five months. Now that he had... well, the reality was beginning to settle in. He was alone again. The life he had was gone. Stuck in a very strange land that didn't make sense to him. Seemingly being conscripted into a what was very likely a war of attrition.

Cyrus adjusted his hood, staring down at the floor. He had been built for war, and yet the idea of going back to such a state. Heading from one battle to another left him feeling hollow. That life had been something he had tried to leave behind. War did leave deep scars. Wounds that never truly healed. The prospect of going back to such a life felt like picking at half-healed injuries. Peeling back the scabs and exposing emotions and memories he had tried to bury within the darkness of his subconscious. I suppose it can't be helped. I am stuck here for the time being. Best to see how it plays out.

He didn't exactly have a stake in this world. It was just one little dust ball in what he was learning was actually a multiverse and not just a single universe. His stomach curled at the idea of leaving so many to die, painful knots twisting inside him. He could leave if he wanted to..... but would he?

Emerging into the bright day of the world left him reeling as his eyes adjusted. It was like trying to interact with Tarkas. Irritatingly bright.

He felt it first, the burst of serenity and peace. The presence of nature surrounded him and brushed against his cracked and frayed shields, smoothing out the sharp edges. Trees, grass, flowers. Running water, fountains and ponds. He could feel it all. Every living thing gave off some form of psychic signature. Plants were by far the weakest. Simply humming with energy so weak it felt like a gentle breeze. The sheer volume of it left him feeling dazed. His shields fell away and he was left fully exposed to the flowing peace. It ran through him like a river and left him feeling warm and content. He shivered.

It was perhaps a testament to how out of it he was, because when the first thought that wasn't his own brushed against his mind he jumped. Like a cat that had been spooked by a cucumber being left behind it. He hastily threw some shields up, flimsy and haphazard. Cyrus silently prayed that Corina didn't notice him being startled or the daze he seemed to be in.

He rolled his shoulders. The background noise generated by the flora around him made the chatter of the townspeople enjoying the scenery bearable, less grating on his overly-sensitive mind.

He took a step forward but was floored by overzealous joy slamming into his mind. So much that he ended up stumbling and tripping on his own foot. His head snapped up, eyes zeroing in on the source. He knew that kind of joy. It only came from one kind of being.

A massive grin spread across his face. "Dogs!"

Cyrus quickly cleared his throat, coughing into a closed fist. He turned to Corina, "shall we?" He bowed forward and extended an arm, much like he had down at the station at the manor. Only this time he was staring at the paved stone beneath him. He didn't need to humiliate himself further by allowing Corina see how red his face was.

God, he really needed to meditate and fix his mind. These mood swings and weakened shields were becoming a hassle to deal with.

Park, Thessaloniki, Solun Region

Corina reached for the offered hand, chuckling quietly as she glanced at Cyrus, obviously amused by his reaction. She started walking with him, down one of the paved paths, coincidentally toward the largest grouping of children and dogs.

"I wonder... what is it with men and dogs?"

Before she gets an answer to her question, Cyrus would feel the background buzz of the park growing a bit stronger, as if the flora around him had evolved sapience of some sort. At the same time, his nose would pick up a very alluring scent.

Not terribly far from there, he would see a small group of children gathered around the base of a tree. Every few moments, a green hand would extend out of the foliage and offer a shiny apple to one of the kids. After a few moments, he would see a green-skinned woman peek out from the tree, hanging upside down. She seemed fairly youthful and almost childlike in her demeanour, which might explain why she seemed oblivious to the effects of gravity on her body, combined with her choice of clothing. It didn't take a psychic to notice that almost every man and a few of the women instantly looked that way.

"Miss Corina, hi! And a new p-AAAH!"

Her sentence was cut short as she faceplanted into the grass, becoming a rather undignified pile of limbs. She quickly stood up and tried to quickly regain some sort of dignity, adjusting her clothes and hair. She then looked at them both, flashed a bright smile and nodded as she spoke.

"I'm fine, I'm fine! Totally meant to do that. Very efficient way of coming down from a tree. Ancient dryad technique"

Cyrus was too distracted by the sudden blooming psychic presence of the flora around him to answer Corina's question. It was as if they were coming into themselves, expanding. Like a mind at the moment of it's birth, unfurling into existence like a psychic flower. Which he supposed was an apt analogy given what was happening around him.

Corina did not seem troubled in the slightest. Of course, she wasn't a telepath. She was blissfully unaware of what was happening. Even so, Cyrus let his eyes sweep their surroundings. Nothing out of the ordinary was happening.

Just then a very sweet smell wafted through the air. It was unlike anything he had ever smelt before. Something that defied description. It was even more calming than the psychic noise of the plants around him. And yet.... that was all it was.

Years of training kicked in. Something was going on here. A smell as good as this didn't just happen naturally, nor did the sudden fluctuation of the flora's psychic energy. He tightened his hold on Corina.

Closing his eyes, he allowed Corina to guide him. He expanded his awareness, allowing it to sweep over the immediate area. It was like being in two places at once, inside his own body, but also outside it as well. Delving into a pseudo-realm that only telepaths were capable of accessing.

All around him the thoughts and emotions of the flora, fauna, and sentients flowed around him. Beside him, Corina looked like a glittering mirror left out in the sun. Her mind bouncing back whatever probes he sent towards it. He continued to sweep his mind over the park, looking for.... whatever the hell was going on. There! At the base of that tree.

Cyrus pulled his consciousness back towards his body. Opening his eyes just in time to see a green-skinned arm appear to hand an apple to the kids that were gathered below. A moment later the body followed suit, hanging upside down from a branch. She was smiling brightly and giggling, even as she flashed the entire park.

Cyrus looked away. It wasn't exactly polite to stare at someone in such a position. Clearly something that many of the men and a few of the women surrounding them hadn't learned. There was a difference between an accident and something purposeful. Like the woman he had his arm linked with. Corina seemed rather content with putting her body on display. Cyrus has a feeling this new woman was a bit too innocent to understand what she was doing. If the quick scan he did of her mind was anything to go by.

"Miss Corina, hi! And a new p-AAAH!"

She was cut off as she tumbled out of the tree. A spectacular display of flailing limbs that ended with her facedown in the grass. She recovered quickly and smiled brightly.

"I'm fine, I'm fine! Totally meant to do that. Very efficient way of coming down from a tree. Ancient dryad technique"

Cyrus looked at Corina with an incredulous look. Eyes wide and mouth slightly ajar. "Friend of yours?"

Scav nodded. "You'd be surprised what people can do if you inject a little extra trust into their world." He paused, considering his next words, but his impatience got the better of his discretion this time. "Not to cut the fun short, but didn't you have something you wanted to talk about? I'm an old man, set in my ways, and I always like to know where I'm headed." He stopped and waited, letting the silence fill in the various meanings layered into his last words.

Blinking twice, Simon just sat across from Scav and rubbed at his eyes, trying to shake off the last of the Tarkas-eclipse, and his brain would make a rebooting sound to any telepaths in the immediate vicinity. Once that sound was done, the more spooky Wampyri would say, "Oh, what we'd do with it is pretty easy to predict. After all, we have a few centuries of history to show how we abuse, weaponize and limit every amazing advance we make... and if history books are accurate, technology was no exception when we had it last time." Leaning back in his seat, he would shrug and then add, "But hey, this is our second go at it, and we understand how magic works now and that's pretty universal and hard to keep away from the peasants, so who knows? Maybe we won't do the exact same things we always do with everything."

Almost as if he hadn't just revealed how incredibly jaded he was, Simon then asks the Archon, "Do you happen to have any museums or art galleries about town? I've been traveling for a few months, and haven't exactly had a chance to relax in a place where I can experience the local culture and expression."

Tarkas perked up when Scav asked about their plans. He stayed silent, however, watching the archon. When Simon mentioned the misuse of technology in human history, it looked for a moment as if the less cynical wampyr would interject, but for once he seemed to think better of it and turned back to the archon instead.

"Sir, I with Scav on this one. You said there was a purpose for us coming with you, yet you also said the training will begin in two days. So where is this marvelous contraption taking us? And what for? Are we going to some secret chambers for more information?"

Ivana backed a step away from the witch, touching her forehead as she frown. That hurts! I wonder what kind of curse she cast on me!

She closely observed her as she did some stuff with the flower and concluded that it might be some kind of magical communitcation.

The thief then dared to speak when she assumed the white-haired lady was done with it.

"Are you sure it was me?", Ivana spoke with a hint of annoyance from her voice. "I do not have that ability as far as I remember."

Her annoyed face turned confused, "Since, you seemed confident that's me, I must've acquired somewhere... unaware."

Then she looked at the witch with determined eyes, "Tell me then. How can I use it properly?"

"One does not simply ...acquire abilities, girl. You're either born with it or you're not. Whether you are able to access them... that's another issue."

Selene gave a bit of a grin at Ivana as she spoke, in the local tongue. It might take the thief a moment to realise she understood her perfectly, despite not knowing the language before.

"At least now you are asking the proper questions. I suspect you are not one for books, so the method used by your associate would be an ill fit for your temperament, correct?"

---Archon's manor, library---

As Vosh kept reading, and likely resisting the urge to sneeze, he would have a much easier time understanding the concepts presented by the various books and manuscripts. As before, he would be periodically interrupted by one of the servant girls, with offerings of food or drink.

---Downtown, park---

"This is Miss Lana. You could say we are all her tenants here. Miss Lana, this is Master Cyrus. He is a guest of my Masters."

Corina glanced at Cyrus maintaining a rather respectful tone toward the younger-looking woman. Lana, on her part, just giggled and waved that off, stepping closer to them. She got a step or two from the man before tilting her head, inspecting him.

"Hi! You are not from around here, are you? You smell different." She paused for a moment, glancing at Corina. "Alex will be here in a bit with the others."

---Subway---

The archon would look between the three, smirking a touch as the car was starting to slow down, clearly nearing its destination. He moved to sit up and stand, cracking his back as he did.

"Ah... that felt good. Now, to your questions..."

He turned to Simon first, nodding a touch. "As a matter of fact, yes. We're still in the early stages of rebuilding but you'll find the gallery and museum within the university campus. Of course, experiencing the local culture is why you are here in the first place."

He glanced at Tarkas and Scav before turning back to Simon, grinning slightly. "As I understand it, you only got to experience some of it... and you probably do not remember most of the fun parts."

He chuckled as the car finally stopped and the doors slid open. He glanced at the former watchman. "You are here to see just what can be achieved when we put our minds to it. To remind you of why we fight, why we bleed... and for whom."

He then glanced at the displaced scavenger, smiling a touch. "And you are here to take a look at some of the recovered items we managed to gather ...as well as talk to some people that will hopefully be joining us soon."

He stepped out of the car, rolling his shoulders before starting for the stairs leading up to the park. "This way, gentlemen...

Scav stood as the car arrived at its destination, attempting to crack his back as Alex had done, but there was no satisfying pop. His back would just have to be sore for now, he supposed. Everything hurt, especially his head. There was at once too much going on and not enough. Scav was a man of action, and in his early days had always been impatient for the next job to seek him out. As his name grew throughout the Wastes, he stopped having to wait, taking job after job with rotating crews, though that did not stop him from becoming especially close with the crew he'd lost on that fateful day that had brought him here. If only it had been any other crew. No, he could not allow himself to get swept in grief or regret. After all, none of this was his fault. He still had to find out whose it was.

Perhaps that was why he'd felt especially impatient to finally get some answers, pore over some tech, and meet these people he was supposed to meet. The faster the next step came, the faster the one after would come, and the faster he could either get home or find out why he was brought here. After all, someone had to have unfrozen him, right? Perhaps he was reading too far into it, inventing a vast conspiracy where none existed, but damn it if he wasn't going to try and throw a wrench into any plan that involved plucking him from his life. He didn't care if it was for the greater good, something more personal, or even just to line someone's pockets. But he also didn't dare make any move before he knew more, could do more. After all, running headlong at an enemy he knew nothing about, an enemy that may not even exist outside his mind, was a one-way ticket to nowhere in this land of goblins and vampires.

And so his impatience would war with his discretion, his temper constantly stoking the flames of the conflict from below. And above it all, a placid mask held together with string and bubblegum. At least if he could reach where they were going and actually start doing something, he'd have a release valve for the pressure building up behind his eyes. And perhaps a mystery or two he could actually solve. He nodded at the archon and exited the car, trying to set a brisk pace for his companions as they set off.

Tarkas exited the car next and re-adjusted his armor and equipment. He thought about the archon's words. Remind us why we are here, why we bleed and for whom... that made no sense. A hero knows why he bleeds and for whom. He does so for the glory this would provide his name and to protect the people. He was not one to argue with superiors, though, so he let it slide. Besides, who knows? Maybe in this particular case there was another reason as well. A secret one. That could be interesting.

Still, that could wait. At the moment there was something else their leader said that sparked Epitheus' curiosity.

"Sir, you mentioned something I've been meaning to ask about. It's true that as least some us have a memory lapses concerning yesterday's events." He glanced briefly at Simon to see his reaction, "it seems that you do something about it. What exactly happened after we met you and why can't we remember most of it?"

Cyrus blinked. "I- smell different?" He shook his head. Lana was... jubilant. Much like one shining beacon Tarkas, but to a more tolerable degree. Speaking of said beacon, he could pick up on the walking lighthouse at the edges of his mental perceptions. Cyrus couldn't help the groan that escaped him.

He unlinked his arm from Corina's. "I hate to cut this short, but I really need to do something about this mess up here. Just, give me like four minutes."

Cyrus left the two women and sat down at the base of the tree. Crossing his legs, he inhaled deeply. His eyes fluttered shut. He tuned the world around him out. Soon all the noise and distractions disappeared. The would around him became a warm fuzz. Like TV static. He turned his gaze inward.

He watched as his own mental landscape stretched out before him. He was standing in a vast blank landscape. Dark and foreboding. It was the point where his conscious mind entwined with his subconscious. About three meters before him stood massive walls. Towering upwards as far as his eyes could see. They seemed to be made out of crystalline glass, but looked far stronger than glass should ever be.

They were the walls he had made as a child. The prison where he threw every traumatic and horrifying thing that had been done to him. Years of torture, physical, mental, and emotional. The wars, the transferences, the blood. It was a fool's gambit. Too keep his trauma repressed like this. But he had no choice if he was to actually live his life. As a psionic he was cursed with a perfect memory. He could never forget. Every memory could be recalled in perfect clarity. Suppressing his demons was easier than dealing with them. He could have another telepath erase them, but he couldn't stomach the idea of subjecting another telepath to his trauma. There was a reason he didn't let Ethan into his mind.

As Cyrus walked the line between awareness and unawareness, hand trailing across the cool glass, he could see the disrepair the walls where in. They were falling apart. Degrading. Piles of crystalline debris, deep fissures, fractal cracks that seemed like they spanned miles. And perhaps the most glaringly obvious damage, the massive hole that had been punched through them from the inside.

That had been caused by his breakdown earlier. As he approached he could hear screaming. Explosion. Gunfire. He stopped. He stared upwards into the darkness. He could do this. He'd done this hundreds of times over the course of his long life.

You had your husbands' support back then. A traitorous voice echoed around him. You're all alone now. Cyrus wrapped his hand around that voice's throat and hunked it through the hole in his walls and into the deep dark of his subconscious.

The taunting had galvanized him. He strode up to the gaping hole with such confidence you'd never know he was terrified. He ignored it all. How the screaming and explosions and gunfire were deafening. How it was all he could hear. He placed his palm across the surface of the walls.

Focus. He began to pour his power into the wall. He'd done this so many times he was practically on autopilot. The wall knit itself back together like a cut healing itself. A deep wound healing and scarring over. The noises stopped abruptly. Opening his now closed eyes, Cyrus was greeted to the site of a perfectly smooth wall. No cracks, no gaping holes that screamed at him. They were repaired.

He pulled himself out of his own mind. Leaving his mindscape behind and returning to reality.

Simon would chuckle at Alex's observed reasons he was here, responding, "Oh, hardly the primary reason. No offense, Archon, but a sightseeing expedition absolutely does not justify the trip to get here from the northern end of Dacia, regardless of how nice the architecture and food might be." He shrugs as the train comes to a stop and adds, "But I figure, after over a month on the road, fighting a Medusa nest among other things, only stopping in roadside inns and taverns who think real coffee is water strained through lima bean pulp, and then being trapped in a stuffy hostel for three days while my employer proved how much of an ass he was..." He left the matter of being drugged and kidnapped unsaid, "I should take advantage of the situation and just get two days of relaxation in. No?"

When Tarkas broached the subject of their abduction, Simon would meet the other wampyri's gaze and raise an eyebrow in surprise. Well if the man wanted to spearhead that, then far be it from Simon to let him go in alone... "I remember having a drink from something called Witch's Brew, which pretty clearly impacted my senses and perception. Very easy to focus, in fact hyper focus, on all the sounds and sights around me while that was in my system. I'm guessing you and Scav had some as well?"

"Books?!" Ivana scoffed, nearly rolling her eyes again with the notion. A scene of her companion, Vosh, succumbing himself to piles of books and scrolls immediately flashed on her mind. For a moment, unconsciously, she wondered how was he doing. But the thought left her abruptly, the same manner as it came to her. She could not imagine herself doing that tedious and boring thing.

"I prefer experience as my teacher," the thief clarified the witch as she looked her in the eye. Determination and confidence could be seen on them as they glistened.

Quickly, she retracted her gaze from the white-haired lady. She looked beyond the windows as if something outside had caught her attention but nothing had caught them. She was instead caught on deep-thoughts. It took long enough before she spoke again.

Selene's lips slowly curled into a smile as she watched Ivana. The thief would feel a light chill going down her spine as the room around them flickered, then vanished. Everything was gone except for the chairs they were sitting on. Ivana would quickly discover she could not sense anything beyond the two.

"Now then, little one... try to see beyond sight. Expand your senses as far as you can go. Redraw the room."

Somewhere nearby, in the manor library, Vosh would sense a momentary disturbance as some kind of power was activated.

---Downtown, park---

By the time Cyrus pulled himself back to reality, things had ...well, they had changed dramatically. He could almost touch the power radiating from Lana, the dryad's hair flowing in a non-existent wind, coming off in waves. She was raised from the ground half a metre or so, supported by thick roots that burrowed into the ground.

A good distance away, three men in what was clearly not local garb were hanging upside down, suspended in the air by vines that had erupted from below. Next to them was a terrified young woman, who was quickly backing away. As vines started moving, they would disrupt the soil around them, only for it to reform moments later. Whoever the three men were, they were quickly being brought over to the dryad.

Corina was watching in silence, her arms crossed in front of her, eyes fixed on the three men. Cyrus might have not been able to properly read her mind, but he didn't need to be a psychic to spot a hint of fear beneath her confident facade. All the dogs and birds in the area had suddenly gone completely still and silent, watching the scene.

Not too far away, Alexander was about to respond to the valid concerns of Scav, Simon, and Tarkas but suddenly all except for the displaced scavenger would feel a jolt down their spine as a massive amount of energy was unleashed. He quickly took off in the general direction of the disturbance, all but leaping over the stairs on his way out.

Without so much as a word, Tarkas took off after the archon. As he ran he was looking around, trying to notice and signs of damage or distress.

While Tarkas and Alex basically went straight towards whatever that had been, Simon went a bit wider, relying on his augmented speed to keep him neck-and-neck with the other men as he took a flanking position and jumped along small walls, the trunks of trees, and other objects around to gain a vantage point to look over the situation.

Scav groaned inside, knowing without knowing there was danger around the corner, or at least some cause for alarm. But with the others was surely safer all the same, so he took off in pursuit, knowing his joints would all chastise him in unison once they'd had the chance to ponder on what had just happened.

Cyrus blinked as he emerged from his own mind. Things felt wrong... all the peace that had once been so pervasive and calming was gone. Replaced with a chilling silence that came from every aspect of the park. Even the plants.

Still disorientated, he stumbled to his feet. "What's...."

He trailed off as he noticed the thick roots wrapped around three men. Dangling them in the air as the moved rapidly towards them. Looking over to Corina he saw her standing at what could be called lax attention. All her focus was on the roots and the men, but her stance was casual. But he could see beneath the facade she had on. There was a glimmer of fear.

Shaking the grogginess from his mind, he moved to stand just behind Corina and Lana. Watching their backs. It was clear that Lana had this under control, but it payed to be cautious.

Surveying the park he found that all eyes were watching the scene unfold. Even the animals were watching the scene. The complete silence was such a stark contrast from mere moments before; it made the hair at the back of his neck stand up.

"I sure hope someone can explain what is going on after this."
