@ azagal: life itself is hostile towards me; i've been an outsider since day one of my life. hc is just par for the course. i'm not a social guy irl(i only have one friend now), so hc is where i do the majority of my socializing. i'm not a part of any other social website; though i have haunted the chan since it's inception.
irl, i have high standards for companionship(making due has bit me in the ass forever). online, i make due. it helps there are decent people here. i try not to let the hate overwhelm me, but that is ever increasingly difficult. still, i'm a man of peace; despite what i have to deal with. all my life, that's been quite a lot.

Although it takes its share from polarization in general, this place is still not thisist or thatist. And since the origin of attachment is a computer game, there is still a variety of people from all around the world, all social classes, all levels of education…
So besides from “old habits die hard,” it still is not just a thing to click on. You pick up the paper and read “Poland is so and so…” Then you come here and talk to someone from Poland, hear how they complain about it and it’s not a dot on a map anymore.

You're not wrong, HC has been called "dead" or "dying" a lot and even back in the day woock, TA, pandora, kookie and a few of the OGs would talke about how the forums have changed. Change is normal, I just feel that throughout the versions of HC it was always a community. This HC seems completely dead in the social aspect. But again I am biased and have only very limited insight in this version of HC so thank you for helping me understand that there is a bit more to it than just "the tavern and osm are dead".
It is obviously short sighted of me to disregard the modding side of the forums and it's great that they're going strong but then again they still have a big sense of community to them, no?
And it's a fair question haha why did I drop by? Mostly it was a morbid curiousity. The manner of discourse here was so foreign to me I sort of couldn't look away cause I didn't think people would really behave that way. And it contrasted very harshly with how I remember this place. So a bit of voyeurism i suppose, i did never engage though and I don't intend to again. This will satisfy my curiousity.
And yeah thanks for pointing out that Joonas still had a working link.

Fair point, it is cool to hear about peoples different lives on here. If i may ask though, why do you keep at it with fred, kiph and gandalf on occassion? You seem pretty unflappable no matter what they throw your way which is cool but doesn't it get boring? Do you think you'll "reach" them at some point or why go for it again and again and again?

So it's the social aspect? Do you think I'd be helpful for the social dynamic if you could maybe dial back the intensity with which you condemn certain views? Or is that part of the social interaction for you?

Well, Azzie, there are some people here who post cool stuff.
Always interesting to check on what others are listening to. For example, I'm currently translating two short stories (by pretty well known authors) who both write "with music". The condition for the project was, they made a mix tape for the other guy who would exclusively listen to THAT and write the story "under the the influence" of that other tape.
In the introduction of that we learn what tracks were on which tape, and I can tell you it's pretty interesting.
There are also people who talk a lot of nonsense, and it makes no sense to let them do that unopposed.

Haha JJ I still remember that you called a german translation of mine "adequate" or something along the lines and I was really mad at you for the longest time lol. Fun to hear you're still in the translation business. Well that project sounds very interesting indeed!
But point taken, I've prolly just missed a lot of the cool stuff in the short time I've taken the occasional look since I gravitated to the "drama" when I visited. Probably skewed my view even more. But yeah very cool to hear that there is still cool stuff going on, thanks for the additional perspective.
And about the whole certain needing to be challenged... I mean I agree with you but on here it just seems pointless. They're not going to change. But maybe changing anyone isn't the the goal rather than the fact that it's important to oppose certain things? Still seems exhausting, even if its correct.

Sometimes it just feels like Val is pulling some dark magic or something. Who ever *really* quits HC? Even Redsoxfan and Cepheus posted before disappearing again, maybe it was a couple of years ago already. Mythical too. I might be forgetting a few others.
Like Blob I joined around H6. At first I was interested by h3 mods but with h6 I started hanging around a bit more on the social aspect, and definitely started to actively post once h7 was announced. Man, the ones around at that time can confirm how chaotic it was, but tons of fun. When arguing over the lore, aesthetics or gameplay aspects of a video takes more proportion than politics.

I'm nostalgic of one of the ****stormiest era of this forum, wait I'm sure there has been worst in the past. Man, can you believe h6 and h7 made h4 look fantastic, while it got so much hate on release.
It's somehow hard to deny the current state of the forum, even if cool stuff still happens, this place will always be a gem be it only for the modding sections.
OSM arguments are less fun though, especially when you start feeling negative about some people you actually respect. But it's also an effect of the internet (duh!), that people go a little more extreme than they would IRL...
Thank you for that opening post, it certainly gives a good vibe this place needs.

@ azagal: didn't you say that you've been lurking here since late last year/early this year? you've debated with me in the past before that, and i remember our interactions, even if you don't. if you've been lurking here lately, then you know why things are the way they are. there is a great divide between certain types of people. that divide will never be bridged because 2 different realities cannot coexist. if people are unwilling or incapable of critical thought, and they insist on being dense and participating in conflict that further divides people and in fact destroys the fabric of a functioning society and the lives contained therein, i'm going to have a problem with them. and for their part, they're going to have a problem with me because i don't participate in that, and fight against it.
and i'm not alone. but there are only a small group of people here, who are up against a majority of the other type of people. and the bias is easily apparent, in the moderation here.
i've fought the opposite type of people, all my life. it's not even just mob mentality; but the equivalent of human bots, because they absolutely lack critical thinking. and their issues go very far, even beyond that.
i wish we could swap places, you and i. i wish you could get a real glimpse of what things look like, from people like myself's side.
it's like being behind enemy lines on an alien planet that looks just like your own. or, being in a society where the mental patients not only roam free, but proliferate. dangerous mental patients dictating the rules.
or, better put, to be floating mostly unprotected, in an ocean where nearly all of the serious wildlife, are different levels of threat.

To be fair I did quit and give Stevie my account when Val started his more ad revenue campaign. That just didn’t sit right with me. Actually, he should still have access. So you can never know which of us it is.
I came back to host an RP(which promptly died ofc) here as this was the most easily available place to all of us to gather.
And to duke it out with Elvin once he got out from under his modshield ofc.
But yeah, I’ve come to the same conclusion as you. There’s open hostility here that drives people away. Ad left too. And when people like him leave, you lose the heart and soul. The rotten meat that’s left behind isn’t worth the sacrifice.

Only regular forums do not fall under this standard. Therefore, I often go to socialize somewhere during my lunch break. Game forums are the most visited now.
