Loathing favored enemy mechanic

I played as nature towns in H3 (Rampart) and H4 (Preserve), but I was never able to get over the absolutely awful "favored enemy" mechanic that the H5 nature town has as an "exclusive" perk.

This mechanic is so dumb because you need to kill certain number of those enemies first to be able to choose them as your "favored enemy", but then you have ALREADY killed them. Most times in normal maps this is completely useless or very nearly so.

This uses your unique hero ability slot and even a building in your town.

So, is there a mod that completely removes/replaces this mechanic?

In any case, what would be a good idea to replace it? (not just buff it)

One way would be to lower the bonus and have it work on every unit (which requires hex editing knowledge) but then you'd have to remove the rain of arrows ability. Imagine if it rained spells on every enemy unit, with high druid bonus. Heh.

Just play large and rich maps where its easy for Sylvan to get all favored enemies. On small and medium maps Sylvan loses anyways due to week 2 war machine rush that is really hard to stop.

That just means I waste a lot more time in ranger's guild choosing favored enemies for underwhelming and rarely used bonuses... plus you need to go to castle to do it before combat

I don't think so. Demon Gating doesn't work like that, neither does buyable runes for dwarves, or creature artifacts for Academy, and so forth, in that they don't force you to change it for each damned different creature you are going to fight. AFAIK even in DUngeon you can just choose your favourite element and mostly be done with it.

@ NimoStart

I think you are mainly playing in single player vs many AI opponents. In that case avenger is really underwhelming. Its hard to get much value out of it when playing against many different towns.

Indeed. I only play vs AI because I have a bad connection. And if they have different towns the skill is almost pointless and requires lots of micromanagement. Thus why I think there should be a mod  which replaces for some other thing.

Incidentally, I quite liked H7 nature's revenge.

[Enemy creatures get up to 1/2/3 marks after being the target of a friendly unit's attack or ability. Creatures attacking a marked creature benefit from +4 Attack for every mark on the target. The mark lasts until the end of the combat round.]

Some nice complementary perks as well:

Mark of the Avenger
The hero's attack additionally marks the target creature.

Impede
Marked enemy creatures also have -1 Movement for each mark

Fast reload
The Sylvan Ballista gets a second attack after attacking a marked creature.

Nature's wrath
The hero gets +1 Magic for each mark on enemy creatures until the end of the combat round.

Sting
At the end of each combat round every enemy creature gets 50 Earth damage for each mark on it.

Nature's luck
Friendly creatures attacking an enemy creature with 3 marks always make critical hits.

That would be something cool to translade to H5, yes, that doesn't require killing stacks first and switching creature modes before each combat. The values would have to be adjusted of course since things like +4 attack or -1 speed would be bigger in h5 context, but the idea is nice.

I think it may be possible to implement it in H5 as combat script, but I'm not 100%. There is also disabling the existing Avenger mechanic. If it's not possible to disable it, scripts can be used to amend the existing mechanic, to apply it on creatures "not" on the kill list. Balancing the bonuses would be key. It would make Avenger more useful for sure.

I think the most simple way to do it is make avenger not unit specific but tier specific - for instance putting any lvl 7 unit in your avenger list should let your units deal increased damage vs any lvl 7 units they fight.

Indeed, in Sylvan Campaign as Findan you usually targered skelletons, vampires and liches iirc. It would be more better, if it was tier based. or you could select favourite enemies for entire faction(for all heroes)
