I have surgery in a few hours so wanted to release it no matter what, just in case y'know.


Pic unrelated, just my impending battle with the Reaper

It's not 100% polished, the maps aren't there for example. It's probably still a few weeks until final release (assuming everything goes fine with my intervention), but people can playtest it here and give me feedback. I'd say this release is about 95% complete (minus the maps)

Anyways, this will let players act as playtesters to see if there are any bugs or other unexpected behaviours (in all my plays I didn't encounter any myself).

Have fun and report your experiences here! Including if they were good, of course

Can't wait to test it but it will have to wait for me to find some relaxed time.

May I suggest for the full release that you create a new entry at MODDB? This way it won't get conflated with the Greatest Mod and may help get better traction.

Apparently I forgot to include the patcher.dll with the download. Installing Verrokster's HD mod from here

This error happened because I was sending all recently modified files and this DLL hasnt been modified since 2018

Also, this error does not affect people with HD mod previously installed.

Soon enough the main file will be replaced to fix this most embarrasing omission. On the other hand, that's why this is a prerelease

Thanks a bunch for the pre-release, downloading now! I will admit I was confused about the ModDB link since it talks about Greatest Mod instead, so I'd like to +1 the suggestion for this to get its own page!

Ultimate Edition feedback and review!

Ok I can finally say that this mod is awesome!!! But yes, it needs some polishing and som bug fixes as well! This post is will be about in general, what do you except!

1. Everything is better right now and it feels like a real new game!! Awesome! And it seems balanced ! Like the new abilities and spells so much! :-)

2. First things first, that this prerelease lack of so many good Equilibris features, which should be included in the final release:

- Equilibris maps and saves could be compatible with this mod, because there are so many good maps on Heroes4maps.com and most of them were built in this. PLs NimoStar can you do it the compatibility for us?

- Necromancy and Summoning menu

- Every levelup increases hero's defence by 1.
Every levelup increases hero's mana by 1.
Every second levelup increases hero's own Magic Resistance by 3%.

- Exp popup in the end of the combat

3. In conclusion all units are unique now and alt. units are so good (all of them I think)
From now is very hard to choose, which unit is better, but yes it also depends on your playstyle as well!! I like it!

4. Quick bug notice- sadly after the fix both of the editor files couldn't work and crashed at the startup requies a fix soon.

5. Creatures and new spells, and balancing review coming in my next post here!!

PS: Edit 1 - I noticed whenever i try to write a save, every words I put, is doubled and also for the cheats as well ( I dont use them, but I tried out), So this bug should be fixed.

I gave it a try!

Stuff I liked:
- Graphics seem to be quite improved!
- New battle terrain looks great and adds a lot.
- The strategic map looks much less "washed out" graphically and seems much easier to read.

Stuff I didn't like:
- The creature changes. More on this below.
- Losing Equilibrius features and changes.

Stuff I'm looking forward to:
- Campaign map changes that help the AI.


On the subject of creature changes...

* Creatures now have a laundry list of abilities and it feels much closer to Heroes 6. Towns lose their unique qualities. Examples from Life: Squires gained No Retaliation and Crossbowmen gained Double Shot - basically Nature's pre-mod highlights.

* The problem of certain tiers being easy picks isn't helped when the correct choice also gets new stuff. Examples from Life: Ballistae get Slayer (which is already meh, it just adds another niche to a niche pick), while Pikemen also get Slayer (huh?) and Unlimited Retaliations (?!?). A less extreme example: Crusaders get Magic Mirror, making the 'good' pick even better.

It feels like ability slots are filled just to fill them, which is not my cup of tea.

Overall, I'm hoping the final mod is modular so I can take what I prefer and leave what I don't. I'd take the graphics changes right now if I could run them with Equilibrius (but I dunno if that's possible).

Didn't you try it? Most Equilibris maps should be compatible. The only thing 100% NOT compatible from equilibris 3.51 is artifacts.

There is no way for me to make those compatible.

And it's not my decision either.

When RoseKavalier did the creature plugin, he only used base H4 as reference - not equilibris, because he "hated DLL hex modifications" as a programmer. Requests for compatibility were ignored on that basis.

So, it's impossible to put in "equilibris features" with the mod as long as Creature Plugin is used. Only hope is petitioning RoseKavalier, not me, to write a new exe patcher that changes the overwrite location in the .exe codes. This also counts for other equilibris features like summoning and necromancy menues (though to be fair I personally didn't like those, since to start with they break the ingame look - however, even if I wanted to RoseKavalier's plugin isn't compatible)

You want to get this done, message in HC RoseKavalier and demand Equilibris 3.51 compatibility by just rewriting the DLL hook locations :V

Certainly I would like the result if people could convince him. This incompatibility is the only reason Greatest Mod (which has Equilibris features) hasn't been updated.

However, as I did mention, equilibris maps should be compatible. Just don't use the artifacts. If you have a specific error message, report it here with the screenshot.

Saved plenty games, didn't have this bug. Same with the cheats, tried them just now. This may be a bug with the system or the display type you have. Things to try:
- Use windowed if you had fullscreen.
- Use compatibility settings in the exe, change windows mode.
- Change renderer from the options menu.

Sorry but you are incorrect. More explanation:

- Sprites no longer have no retaliation, instead thay have Magic Mirror and Weakness. How is this not a much better highlight?
- Sprites are a fast fragile flyer, Squires are a slow tankie unit. Not comparable.
- Squires are basically the ONLY creature with No Retaliation now. The ability is actually much less used in the mod. How is that not unique?

- Crossbowmen having Double Shot and NOT no range penalty is only accurate. In medieval weaponry, crossbows are SHORTER ranged than Bows, and lower power. Their only advantage is they can fire quicker and don't require as much training to aim. The crossbow change is a historical accuracy necessity, not caprice.

Furthermore in gameplay terms, the old no range penalty ability was too close to the Ballista, making it boring by having two units with the same ability AT consecutive tiers, IN the same faction.

But now think this:
- Crossbowmen have half as many shots as before (since they deplete ammo at double rate).
- Crossbowmen don't strike first at a distance like Elves do.
- Crossbowmen are just something you get at level 1, Elves are a specialized choice with much higher stats.
So really, there is no overlap still.

- Ballista have slayer at a distance, Pikemen have slayer in melee. This isn't the same thing.

This isn't random at all, this is deliberately flavorful.
See for example Game of Thrones where ballistae are the only effective weapon against dragons, which makes sense since they are essentially a huge bolt.

Pikemen are also specialized against big enemies .- this isn't even speculation, this is fact. Pikes are the premier anti-cavalry weapon, thus also why formation helps them have unlimited retaliation, which is historically accurate of armed phalanxes (like at Thermopilae).

Crusaders lost their Ward for Magic Mirror. Magic Mirror is a niche ability.

However, Monks still have their Ward AND they have No Melee Penalty. I think you seriously underestimate shooters in general, thinking the ballista is "niche" just belies it. Shooters are not only key in sieges (where in H4 each castle tower gives them an INSANE firepower boost), but they are also key to having lossless fights against the AI, specially if you slow, weaken or swamp them (which given there are more spells to do that now, is easier than ever).

NO existing shooter is a bad choice, quite at the contrary, they were good in vanilla H4 already.

On the other hand, I understand your criticisms aren't actually about balance since you didn't highlight any balance problem with the changes. As I said, for nostalgia's sake, you will have a .json file with all the default abilities.

I think you just want "equilibrium with better graphics". That's fine. You already got that just by installing the mod. The edited campaigns will also be equilibris compatible.

The graphics changes should be applied to your installed equilibris automatically (except the terrain composite changes). Just try it.

I think those modifications would be fine... if I could also change what secondary skills do.

Right now, all those three requests are covered by skills
- Mana is all five magic secondary skills
- Defense is Combat skill
- Resistance is huh, Resistance skill

Since a 64 level hero in your scheme would already have 102% magic resistance, Resistance would be obsolete. Heroes with that skill would be indirectly punished since they can get them for free by levelling up (and over 100% resistance is useless). Max level in H4 is 70.

All in all, I need the help of an advanced programmer to implement those kind of changes since they imply also changing the effect of skills for something else, which also needs to be decided and some people won't like. (see our conservative friend here)

Strange? The editor is working flawlessly for me. Could you send a screenshot? You say it worked before the last DLL? The DLL shoudn't change anything at all about the editor, since the editor isn't patched with it, it's completely independent. Try re-extract the whole mod and use the mod editor, it may be something you changed in the object palettes that is invalid.

Window mode the game. Go to "options" top system menu. Uncheck "cold CPU" and "single core".

Go to "image". Uncheck  "interpolation".

Go to "resolution". Uncheck "transparent windows".

Go to "mods" -> "resolution mod". Check your system screen aspect ratio. You should be using the same aspect ratio as your screen.

Go to "display". Disable VSync.

Enable Fullscreen.

Restart your game.

Choose your desired resolution in ingame options, lower resolutions increase performance.

Please report if this worked to alleviate your performance problems, that could boost your FPS to near 30 or more, which is more than fine for this game.

Unfortunately, nothing helped, not even 1 fps was added. Probably the problem is that I have problems with the video card. But so far I do not know how to play, because it is completely impossible with such a FPS.

If nothing helped you may be hardware rendering with processor power alone. You will need to install/update graphic cards drivers (maybe intel HD 4000? Don't know your laptop model)

The HD game is rendered with OpenGL. You can try in "display" between three different OpenGl options and report back.

THe only way to play non HD would be removing the whole HD components from the install. This is possible, but they are quite a few, so I will probably provide a non-HD option with the full release, as well.

However, please do try what I told you: Install/update graphic drivers and try all three OpenGL modes. Also, you can turn on the FPS counter from Display -> FPS counter as well, if you hadn't already

Also, something besides this:
Can anyone check if Multiplayer online with other clean Ultimate 1.1 prototypes works? Be it normally, Hamachi or GameRanger, etc.

Since there really are problems with my video card, as well as with the drivers, that's why this situation happens. I can't even switch the OpenGL modes. As well as vertical sync is not available. Can you tell me please which HD mod files I can delete?
P.S. GameRanger is unlikely to work, because it only needs the original Heroes exe.
