The more I look into this, the more worried I get. On surface level it looks like a call back to Heroes2 or 3. The pixel art is fantastic and the music is good too from what I've heard. But it also gives me Heroes 6 vibes tbh. The magic system hasn't been talked about yet and whether or not there is any RNG in the game is yet to be determined. You CANNOT mix faction units and there are no neutral units, which are both huge negatives for me. Reminds me of H6 which had very little neutrals (with almost no way to recruit them) along with the town conversion mechanics which made it so mixing factions was pointless. They've got limits on unit stacks. Their FAQ is mostly a bunch of heroes mechanics that will not be in the game, lol.

Both line ups that they've shown are interesting at least.

Progress seems slow so I doubt its even going to make its Q1 release date. Still waiting on the other faction line ups along with any unit abilities. I thought I signed up for the alpha on their website a while back, but apparently that was just a farce.

I'm sure it'll be a good game, just not a great game.

With how King's Bounty 2 and Disciples Liberation have come and gone, I'm afraid Songs of Conquest will similarly be another TBS "phase" that lasts a few weeks and then disappears. Following your reply, I gave a view to the 40th dev diary something video and... Not feeling it. The game looks okay-ish, but not impressive.

There isn’t even a wait command in battles, lol. Certainly disappointing to say the least. I just don’t see the multiplayer having that lasting effect like Heroes 1-5 has. Like you said, it’ll probably be just a phase and then slowly forgotten.

Comes out next week in Early access.

Link to steam page.

Also comes out on GOG same date.

Early access is more about extra features and community feedback rather than having to wait for most of the game like a normal EA. All the factions and the campaign will be there.

I’ve been in alpha for a few months if anyone wants to know any details about the game feel free to ask.

Overall I really enjoy it and I find it to hit closer to home of the nwc games than anything Ubisoft has ever put out. The pixel art and atmosphere is phenomenal. The additions to the game’s mechanics feel great such as opportunity attacks or “zoning”, along with height differences. Great mix of 8 troops per faction. Magic system is unique.

The negatives for me are that the troops don’t really stand out as much as I’d like and the game has a more fast paced feel to it. But those are a bit subjective and I recommend everyone here to at least give it a try if you’re at all disappointed with where homm has ended up. With the steam refund policy it’s almost no brainer for a heroes fan (under 2 hours of play time you can get a refund) but it’s also available on GOG and epic game store.

What's the point of Early Access? If you think your game is ready then sell it, listen to players' feedback and patch it. Or I don't understand the benefits of being in Early Access. I wanted to play BG3 but it's still in EA. I don't want to play unfinished games, don't want to play under constantly changing mechanics. Do you really think that, for example, King's Bounty from Katauri is a finished game? Just look at the Orc Lands. Nevertheless, it feels like a solid game. I don't see the point into going EA unless the developers themselves think their game is unfinished. If not, release the game and then fix what you wanna fix via standard patches, DLCs and addons.

I’m not a fan of early access myself, I forgot to mention that part.

The reason I’m not fan though, is that you often pay for like 1/4 of the game, like with divinity or bg3, King Arthur knights tale, etc. This isn’t entirely the case with SoC. As far as I’m aware, the whole campaign is in the game now. You can play all the factions and the map editor is there. It’s in EA for a year to get feedback on what they should work on next while finalizing troop stats and adding abilities. Sim turns is a feature they’re on the fence about, and are waiting to hear feedback on.

Second-hand experience here. Gifted it to my brother after reading some positive reviews and showing the promo videos. He's no less a fan of the Heroes games of old and the classic TBS experience than I am and was quite excited to try it.

So far, he's unimpressed after playing the campaign for a while. He then showed me this review of the game, which he said sums it up to a fair degree: https://steamcommunity.com/id/TorNis/recommended/867210/

If that review is even half-accurate, it's a problem. It took 5 years to get this game released, and even then in early access. It wouldn't be very funny if it were yet another shallow attempt at riding the Heroes of Might & Magic nostalgia wave.

Though as it looks right now, the majority of reviews are positive. And graphically it does look appealing. The core gameplay loop is what concerns me. I'll just wait and see for now, cautiously observing from the sidelines how it unfolds. It might be too early to judge.

It's harsh, but it's true. I really hope the devs are willing to listen, for this is by far the best spiritual successor to HoMM3 since  1999.

Yeah I mean to each their own. There’s a good chunk of people who were expecting it to be a carbon copy of heroes 3 for some reason. I’ve read that review and I just kinda laughed. Especially seeing the twitch username.

There’s a few decent observations in there which I’d agree with to a degree, but he’s also missing the point in a lot of it as he just goes through each difference and comparing it to heroes 3. Most of their changes do work well in the game when they’re all in motion.

The full on anti change vibe is just so cringy at this point. I’ve seen a number of people complaining because there isn’t a town screen for instance, when there is clearly a different way to construct castles with three different types and a town screen just wouldn’t work.

The overall difference to this and heroes is its faster pace and the changes that make that happen. That’s the pill homm fans need to swallow. I’m not even a huge fan of it all but to act like it’s a totally different kind of game and there’s no tactical depth now is simply false. I was worried about some of the changes going into it but I don’t see how any heroes fan could say it’s so bad it deserves a negative review. He clearly made it when he was raging as you can tell with some of his writing. I see he’s gone back and edited parts as he’s played more and realized he was wrong on stuff. Which is Dope, I wonder if the people who read it will go back and see what he’s edited out his mistakes lmao.

Luckily he’s just a loud minority. Nothing new.

I mean, there's so much potential, but, imho, these are things to be concerned about:

The turns take too long (I crave for those HoMM3 fast turn times)
The AI cheats a lot
Hero development is shallow as f**k
Artifacts are shallow
The Magic system, albeit innovative and fun, deserves to be so much more...
