In my map there are not really any "blocks" like that. It is a very open map, so you can go almost anywhere. Of course there are guards or Borderguards/gates or Quest Guards/gates around, but DD will not really help you here.

I mostly play my own map alone or co-op with a friend, but the map keeps evolving, so it's not the same map as it was 3, 6 or 9 months ago.
I also keep changing the rules of the game.

I have been thinking about creating a more land based map from scratch, but I currently don't have the time for that.
I have also been editing and building upon other existing maps, but I have'nt really been satisfied with those, so I dropped them again. I'm quite a perfectionist you know.

Check my latter maps. They were done using the template editor, like this:
1. You build a scheme in your head of how you want the map to behave and translate that into a template, then try it a bunch of times until you get one map that looks good to you.
2. Then you redraw the parts of the map you aren't satisfied with and do the editing of everything that will make the difference in your map (like give Corkes Tactics as second SS).

For me, it goes incredibly faster then to start from scratch but, by the time I tried it last, Water terrain wasn't working right, so you could only build maps without water. Also, if you want a special map, like a map of Westeros from GoT or Greece from The Odyssey, you have to do it by hand.
I recommend to use some tricks for a better AI behavior, like the events in front of the towns (giving the most needed Secondary Skills and spells to any hero AI hires) and to split the heroes between player and AI, so you don't get buffed heroes. If you only allow each race to hire their own heroes, you can achieve this while playing full random but you have to make sure you are the only one playing your race.

I actually like the idea of only hiring heroes from your own town or maybe same alignment.
Always seemed a bit weird to me that Tower could hire Inferno heroes or Necro could hire Castle heroes and vice virsa.

If you allow for the entire alignment to appear in tavern, you will need the map to be split by alignment, for instance good X evil, between human players and computer or you might find the heroes you buffed for AI in your tavern, something I find awful.

One thing I did recently but is not published is to use the multiple times seer's huts to give AI progressive bonus, like this:
1. put a seer's hut near each AI starting town
2. use it to give a certain amount of gold, experience and Primary Skills to an hero of that color.
3. place a wait till week 2 condition and repeat the rewards, then wait for week 3 and repeat, and that for some months.

This allows AI to get buffed heroes continuously and you don't need to edit them. Just make sure you gave them Wisdom, Earth & Air before they can visit the seer's hut.
