Poll Question:
country border walls... yes? no?

two of my maps will have bordering countries of Antagarich. the question i pose to hc is, should these country borders have walls? yes or no, and why? if yes, for all borders, or just good/evil borders? should these borders be fiercely guarded, yes or no?

Responses:
yes, borders for all
yes, borders for good/evil

Be carefully. It may make maps too linear with only one road to movement. It sholud be a lot of sides you can go. It makes H3 so great because its big open world. But often you have mountains. So walls can be too instead hills. It may be something new.

Seems like there is not a lot of people visiting HC these days.
Making polls always make you wish for more votes.
(I have'nt voted here. I suppose borders could be interesting, but like Baronus said, they might also make things "too linear".
My own map is extremely open and I kinda like that.)

I think guarded good/evil borders would work fine. Walls at the borders sound good too.

By the way, I don't think I've encountered custom maps with the actual continent of Antagarich before. This sounds interesting.

My man, I check this site like twice a week and I bet some people that post more often might do so even rarer, you can't post something like this one day after starting the poll!

To answer the question, I think actual, concrete walls between nations in a historic context are pretty rare. I could be wrong though, and it's very much a subject I would want to research if I worked on a project like yours. I know comparing real world history to a game is what it is, but that's where I would start with if realism is an issue. I could definitely understand a guarded wall on places where there are cities close to each other or close to the border, but to have a wall all the way across a border seems a bit weird. Who would have built it and how could the borders be so well defined that each side is okay with it? With H3's story being what it is with the Kreegan invasion it seems a bit weird to have walls at all, I would expect there to be temporary posts and bases instead of spending resources on an assumed wall between "countries".

i forget how slow hc is. that said, usually, if something gets one reply then is buried by other threads, it tends to be a dead thread.

as for the walls, i haven't improved the WoG-added stone walls yet(or added walls for the original garrisons yet); i was referring to HotA's barricade walls/garrisons.

Generally I just use mountains/forests as natural walls and then add some garrisons. That should be enough and let the map look natural.

between mountains maybe, but not trees. i always wondered why they never had walls to go with the garrisons. i may be able to make some that mirror the garrisons, but i'm not sure; i have something close for the "evil" garrisons i made, but so far they aren't at the correct angles. it will take a bit of work to even see if they'll look/stack correctly.

While not a huge fan of "fencing" the map, just by looking at the environments you are creating for your campaign I believe you can come up with a method of adding the walls without it feeling like they're there just because it's necessary for the gameplay. Besides, I'd say that just because a kingdom decides to wall up their boundaries that doesn't mean they can be 100% effective at that. There might be secret ways-around to sneak into forbidden lands...

thank you, that was pleasant to read; it improved my mood a good deal. yes, i can work them in where applicable, and make them look "natural". i did the same thing for another map that was going to be part of the campaign, but i will have to rewrite that one and the other for solo releases.
