Old H4 alpha magic system

As you can well see these spells are probably divided in 4 schools, not 5.

This coincides in a way with the 4 non-magic main H4 skills.

Probably this was back when there still was "four elements" magic with Earth, Air, Water, and Fire.

We can see some spells are divided which means some spells were meant to be available to more than one school at the same time! (Unlike as in the finished game)

Another possibility is that maybe there were "might" spells.

What do you think? Interesting, isn't it?

Even though this system seems somewhat muddled, I must say I much prefer these spell icons, at least! They look truly "Magical"

Yes probably first conception was 4 elements like H3 so barbarians would had spells but maybe only to lvl 3? Final conception is as we see. Generally its better system than H3 ,all hero can learn all spell in each gameplay'. In fact all h3 hero is nearly the same. Its no difference playing varoius faction. In H4 we have completly different style plaing 5 magic heroes. And another playing 4 non magic. We have 9 styles of heroes and its better system.

Nice find! I'm no architect, but I see five different colors there - the first spell has a yellowish border, the second, from left to right, salmon, the fourth, purple, the fifth, both orange and blue

I think same. I think MTG style, a new combined alliance or school magic. Exemple Blind represents all school Magic. But.. Is Blind? If yes, today H4 you find a Blind, Swamp Wasp, Confusion and Song of Peace and then maybe Fear terror.. I love what spell allows a few of school magic. But complex system, it demands right order. Simple today H4 three school spells.

Well, I see it differently, Gandalf.

To me, there are two types of spells: Elemental spells, and non-elemental spells (might?)

Consider this:

(Background color for clarification)

The most we see a spell divided is in four parts; yet, other spells are divided in three parts, none of which have the same color scheme of the ones divided in four.

These schemes also don't mix: For example, there is no spell with half tan and half green at all. Each is on their side, mixed with others of their side.

So for me there are four Elemental and three Non-Elemental skills at play here!

In Might&Magic there were three non-elemental schools - body, mind and spirit. Probably what's going on here.

Strength, Slow, Aging and Stone skin (spells with tan borders) would fit in 'body' school.

Fear, Fearless, Bind (?) and blind (spells with purple borders) would be 'mind'.

And Precision, Prayer, Banishment and Soul Eater (spells with yellow/turquoise border) would be 'spirit'.

Yes I see on the left 3 schools on the right 4 schools looking at borders colors. We have common spelles using 2,3,4 colors. It looks like Might and Magic system. Are you sure its for Heroes 4? Maybe for Might and Magic 8?

Yes, that explains it - Body, Mind and Spirit!

And yes Baronus, this was in H4 concept art. You can even see how some of these drawins were reused for the final H4 spells.

Not different style. Look at "fire aura". It's the same drawing.

It's possible that for the alpha they were reusing some assets. The MM7 don't look to have the same border.

Fire aura is another look at man inside. In MM7 is simply the same. Any you give skills picture not spells.

Thanks. Good place to rip textures from

Except there are no archives of stuff inside when clicking

Also, I wonder if softer, more infantile style of H4 compared to other NWC installments was culturally related to "9/11" terrorist attacks and the reaction thereof. Many games were censored or became lighter as a result.
