How scientific is psychiatry?

Video on the creation of dvmi

The summary of this video is a guy that interviewed a few people involved in the process of creating and altering the DVMI compendium of mental illnesses.

The very short version is that only about 5 percent of mental illnesses actually have a biological marker to prove it's existence ( like alzheimer's ) and the last 95 percent do not ; they are decided upon by a very small group of psychiatrists ( for the DVMI 3 it was 9 psychiatrists for example ) that votes on whether they should allow one in or not.

The rest of the video is the links of pharma companies to such decisions taken, the standard profit driven self interest corruption seen everywhere.

How scientific do you think voting is, exactly? Lol.

Not scientific at all. Heck, Medicine itself is closer to art and engineering than to pure science. But psychiatry is neither one nor the other. Reading this:

Psychiatry: The Science of Lies

I never looked back. It's pure bull.

You just gotta love the internet.

Shouldn't we separate the thing itself from
a) human desire to "solve" perceived "problems" at all cost and
b) human greed and desire to "make a profit" from anything?

Example: religion is a result of a). Tele-evangelism is an example for b).
The thing itself are of course question like where do we com from and so on.

Look no further than Wikipedia to read a lot about the controversies about psychiatry - there are known problems.

But the totally irresponsible prescription of "meds" - which has probably replaced things like lobotomy and electroshock therapy as the most hair-rising, excuse the pun, method - is obviously a problem in regular "medicine" as well, considering things like opioids, antacids,  blood pressure meds and other are prescribed and or taken freely and with very doubtful results.
And medicine hasn't been error-free and probably won't be. Wrong diagnoses, wrong treatments based on wrong theories are a matter of course, just that errors (as in "try and error") tend to be somewhat costly.

And you can make a very scientific point about physics not being scientific anymore: very expensive experiments are undertaken to prove predictions resulting from established theories and when they fail to do so - showing, in fact, results far from the predictions, this isn't taken as a hint that the theory may be faulty, but instead the result is more or less ignored: something must have been faulty with the experiment.

See, the problem nowadays is that you might gain the impression we had solved most every problem and knew so much. But that's an illusion. We don't know jack, but PRETEND to know the world. Science HELPS, if it's done correctly. It seems to be an ersatz-religion for many.

Psychiatry and psychology are hard to scientifical verification. Because its not a material substancion of investigation. But you have here true and false. More depends on honesty of scientists.
A lot of failed psychical problems are in fact spiritual problems. A lot of possesed by demona are false diagnosis of psychical problem. In fact depression can be removed if you have good realtions with God.

Psychiatry today is very interlinked with neurology. In terms of that, it’s much closer to positive sciences than it was in the times of Freud or Jung etc. But of course, it is still closer to social sciences in terms of being open to interpretation compared to biology or chemistry etc.

Is voting a scientific process, depends on the criteria of how you vote and why your vote counts I guess. Any (scientific) consensus after all, is in a way, a kind of voting. That doesnt mean the consensus is set in in stone and unfalsifiable. But it also doesnt mean you can replace a scientific hypothesis with mystical or conspirical arguments. In the end, it’s all a question of what is more probable and which metric you use to decide that.

Also, great idea:

a good quote from one of the reviews worth extracting:

"Bi-polar and psyzophrenia are handled by psychiatrists with medicines. But the root cause is protein deficiency from yeast overgrowth, inflammation to the thyroid from leaky gut syndrome (caused by the yeast), and iodine deficiency (iodine is the main ingredient in thyroid hormone). Read "Enzymes for Autism" for info about yeast cleansing and leaky gut healing (or look it up on google). Take the digestive enzymes for wheat and milk proteins for a week to reduce inflammation those proteins cause when they leak into your body, you'll get relief of your sypmtoms while you are detoxing. Then do iodine fulfillment therapy for low thyroid and for heavy metal detoxing (I like Eidon.com the best). Another good book is "Who's Crazy Here?" I cleared up my son's Asperger's, Tourette's, anxiety, and my own anxiety, ADD and many other low thyroid symptoms plus chronic arthritis with those 3 treatments. Insurance can't afford to do these things, it would bankrupt them."

just some intriguing lines of research..

That's been "debunked" for a long time know.
The problem is that scientists don't know what exactly is the cause of depression. So there isn't a "safe" treatment - you cannot cure what you don't understand (fully).
Since SOME anti-depressants DO work for SOME of the depressed (the fact notwithstanding that it's not clear why), in SOME cases they are better than nothing.
