My fav is the Rampart without a doubt!
Second is Dungeon (Harpy Hags are one of the BEST creatures in the game!)

I like the look of the conflux, but I don't really play it...  I think I'm just bitter that they stole my sprites!

I like Rampart. Beautiful buildings (the mage guides just like some Chinese buildings ), most environmental friendly town, give me a holiday resort feel.

When playing, I like Stronghold. The town of man.
(ooop no offense to ladies. )

necropolis for life, or something

necropolis is my all time favourite castle, though its lvl 7 creature can suck my nuts, being undead helps, i mean with the skeleton transformer and necromancy, give the necromancers some time and their unstopable, if you've played the map warlords, u will see necropolis at its best (on warlords there are no lvl 7 creatures available to be bought) and the necropolis has the best 6th lvl creature, also vampire lords can get their life back, so i i think necropolis is the best on large maps, no doubt, not to mention their my favourite.  i never use rampart though, they need too many fuking crystals, its crazy (and their buildings r chinese :[ ) and also their creatures arent too great either.

On most small maps Fortress is nice to have. Dont have to think about defending your castle with half your troops. Stronghold is another good choice.

On medium& some large maps, Castle is usually my favourite. They are strong and balanced (but expensive). Everything depends on the map as usual.

In the longest games, I think Rampart is outstanding. They have the strongest units and can afford to buy them. Conflux with the armageddon spell is probably even better, but that is as crazy as the old gremlin-bug. Conflux dont belong in this game.

I`m new to this board, and I keep reading posts about how the conflux is unbalanced and that it is the best!!!
I have always thought it was the worst:0!!!

Okay, the heroes are great, the grail structure is great, and the structure that lets you buy any magic skill is great if you have the money...

But the creatures...

Lvl 1ixie\Sprite=The worst lvl1 creature, but highly numbered and cheap, bad anyway
Lvl 2:Air\Storm elemental=Okay, okay, the best lvl2 monster, but very expensive and low numebered
Lvl 3:Water\Ice elemental=Not so good, average and expensive
Lvl 4:Fire\Energy elemental=Bad, only thing armageddon
Lvl 5:Earth\Magma elemental=The worts lvl5 monster in the game!!! It sucks real bad, the numbers does NOT make up for it
Lvl 6hycic\Magic elemental=They are pretty bad, but the magic immunity is good
Lvl 7:Fire bird\Phonix=Okay 4 pert week...

If you get the grail, you win! Three creatures immune against armeageddon! But without the grail you can`t get armageddon in a conflux... I can`t seem to get why this is the best town

You are pretty much correct Henl86. Cunflux can be either the best or the worst race. Usually not because they have bad units though, but because they are so expensive. On smaller maps I would never choose them.

On large maps on the other hand it is likely that you get armageddon somehow, from 2ndary towns, tome of fire magic or grail structure. So as you see it is a race that depends mostly on luck more than skill and you cant rely on luck if you want to win all battles.

Conflux Thoughts

I think the conflux is a very strong structure, and relativily cheap to build. for maps where you wanna get your lvl 7 creatures and run with them, conflux is super, cheap to build and upgrade the firebirds and double production. I dont need a lot of luck with conflux

Coolest and Strongest

Castle is the strongest (The Conflux shouldn't be a town) but it is so snowing boring.  All human and a mega-powerful angel. Tower is strong, but hello expensive.

I think that Dungeon and Rampart are the coolest.  Dungeon is strong too, so I play that one a lot.  Rampart would be good, but it is to dang slow.

As for the weakest, they are all about equal except Fortress and Inferno.  They are just pathetic unless you are on the right map.

Why are they getting rid of Dungeon in H4?!  What gives?!

The gremlin bug (or gremlin rush) is a bug before the patch. In the old version of homm3 (the oldest version???), all heroes start with some troops. For tower heroes, they usually start with more than 50 gremlins (some even 70+ gremlins !) So what u need to do is to hire 3 to 4 heroes, combining their troops and then upgrade to master gremlin. Viola...... 200+ MG is nearly impossible to stop in week 1.

Similar tricks include those heroes start with huge troops (e.g. those lv 1 specialists, the basilik specialist.....)

Well, due to a legion of complaint received from players, NWC fix it up. So now besides first 2 heroes, all others start with only a single level 1 creature.

Gremlin Rush

I think the Gremlin rush worked like this:

You hire 2 heroes and put one in the garrison.  Give the garrison hero all but one gremlin.  Have the other hero attack a monster very close to town and retreat.  Then you rehire him again and you get all his troops back.  When that hero had no more movement you replaced him with the garrison hero.  Repeat until you run out of gold. Then you have about 300+ gremlins.

The patch made it so a hero that retreated only got 1 gremlin when rehired.

At least, I'm pretty sure that's how it worked
