New hero portrait preview - Heroes 4 ULTIMATE

As part of Heroes 4 Ultimate v8, we are updating the Chaos hero portraits. Rather than redoing them from scratch, however, we are simply enhancing elements to existing portraits while adding others.

Chaos portraits in particular often felt kind of barren since they either depicted naked minotaurs, orcs and goblins, or rather plain "thieves".

With the overhaul of Thief class to Impostors, a new look was needed. One that also showed how Chaos had changed identity, had more varied magic rather than just damage, and had nobility secondary skills.

As a result, their heroes also look more regal, and even their text depictions are updated to reflect this change.

Let's start the preview with the female Sorcerers:

Aathea

Whether it's a war with genies, or humans, or even her own efreet kind, the opponent doesn't matter to Aathea.  Everyone and everything is fair game in her book.  Likewise, Aathea is not above using whatever means it takes to win, because the winner is the one who gets to thrive.

Aathea already looked quite regal, other than color restoration she now has a gem embedded on her headwear.

Atella

Atella is a teacher as well as a mage, although it has been a while since she took a personal apprentice.  She's highly respected among minotaur society, and feared because she somehow knows everyone's darkest secrets and isn't afraid to expose them.

Atella now has a shimmering necklace.

Helice

Helice is capable of devoting days to study and contemplation, but when she is done she usually bursts into a sort of contained sublime rage that has been known to last for the better part of a night.  Her eccentric behavior makes those around her edgy, but no one is going to tell her to go away either, because she's too much of a good company.

Helice got a nice shamanistic ear-ring.

Isa

Isa believes she wasted too many years serving an indifferent human master who only ended up getting himself murdered in battle, leaving her nothing.  Now, she seldom rests because she's trying to make up for lost time, and she relies on no one but herself.

It's hard to make a face like that look regal, but well, poor Isa tried to decorate herself as she could.

Mayweda

How can such a pretty young girl become such a dangerous woman?  Mayweda may be beautiful, the type who might need to be rescued by a knight, but she's more likely to drop a poisonous snake down the armor of any interested hero who dares pretend coming to her aid.

Mayweda is now shining and she knows it. As a curiosity, she was the model for the original female Sorceress, so she uses that sprite.

Mered

Mered comes from a long line of orc women who were clan sorcerers, so it was easy for her to slip into this profession.  She would've continued as a traditional spellcaster if the Reckoning hadn't killed most of her tribe.  Now, she wants more than to follow the path of her foremothers.  She wants wealth and power.

Mered got a nice silvery crown to go with her ambitions.

Nefafareen

Ancient even for an efreet, Nefafareen is credited as the first of her kind to abandon her innate powers to wield magic.  All efreeti sorcerers have either been taught by Nefafareen or by one of her students.  Until recently, she has lived exclusively on the Plane of Fire, traveling to this realm now for an unspoken reason.

Nefafareen now has a hanging metal decoration to match her turban. Also, one of the only without any bio change, as she was already pretty important and not spoken of lightly.

Pythia

Pythia served a powerful sorcerer for decades to learn the secrets of his power.  When there was nothing more to learn, she abandoned the old man to his friends and set out to create an empire of her own.  So far, however, she has only managed to make a name for herself as a daring impersonator.

One of the very few Sorceresses (?) to get an earnest stereotypical crown for herself.

Rana

Rana was raised in an Erathian orphanage run by monks who put all the children on a strict regimen of chores, study, prayer, and more chores.  No independent thinking allowed.  To this day she still fights tooth and nail against any hint of oppression, and just wants to free the people from their shackles!

Rana not only got a very nice semi-translucent tiara, but also a more favorable articulation for her cause.

Sephinroth

Sephinroth was not amused when the Reckoning destroyed Erathia and ended her chance to rule the Gryphonheart line. Now, she has to leverage her position as the first female human warlock in order to claim even bigger shares. As it happens, the destiny of a whole new world is at stake.

Other than enhancements to color and contrast and a glint in her gem, Sephinroth had her bio rewritten to acknowledge her Heroes III bio instead of dismissing it, since she was kind of impressive there.

Cyrca

Cyrca is the daughter of a powerful medusa sorceress and a human necromancer.  She later followed in her mother’s footsteps and became a leader of her people. Although she is not a full medusa (and can’t turn anyone into stone), she has held her rule thanks to her considerable magical talent.

Has a little tiara below her "hair"; other than that, her bio was already accurate to a ruler. This was also the only "campaign" sorceress, though Ultimate enables her by default, much as other campaign heroes.

Yoru

Yoru showed a talent for magic at an early age, so her family sent her away to study under a human sorcerer.  As she traveled the world with her teacher, she studied its various races with great interest, but there is one race she wished she knew more about - minotaurs. Thus she joined the Asylum forces as a skilled magic user.

Contrary to her relatively humble bio, Yoru already had a high countenance with a glare full of superiority. Thus, a necklace that matches her golden tone was enough to seal the deal.

Yorpix

Yorpix became a sorcerer because no orc male would have such an independent-minded and studious female as a mate.  Besides, she didn’t want one of those weaklings anyway, desiring to rule on her own.  Few people can put up with Yorpix's demands, and now that she has magic at her command many fear her swaying temper.

We end with a second heroine who wears an earnest stereotypical crown (although a different one), which fits her due to her independence ambitions.

Which one is your favourite?

Soon enough more hero genders and classes will be showcased.

Finally a lore-accurate Cyrca, where you can see, she is from noble descendence, yet the years of imprisonment put dust on that.
