Problem with combat (warning: rant)

First, this post offers nothing new.. It's just another rant post which rehashes what other people have already said. But I admit I haven't been playing this game all that much lately and didn't realize the main problem until a couple of days ago.

Combat is a very powerful skill. But I find it boring.. so I never take it.

And that's where the problem lies.. You can't seem to avoid it. I thought that when you level up, you would have been able to choose what skills you want to develop, but combat always pops up as one of those skills and your main skill. You can never get anything else unless you get it from a learning center. Why should it be like that? You should be able to learn each of the skills equally. The only way to learn the skill you want, is to find it at a university or another similar map location.

I was playing Elwyn's campain, map 1, and all the castles I took had mage guilds with lots of life spells. I decided I really needed to learn Life magic to take advantage of it, but it never popped up on my level ups.. It was always combat and Nature magic. I eventually got GM nature magic, and no other skill and still combat kept appearing. So the only other way for Elwyn to learn Life magic is from a learning shrine.. But the problem is that there was none on that map. So the big flaw is that you can't learn the skill you want unless you find it from a learning center, but if there's no learning center you can't learn it at all.

I suggest they reduce the chances of combat appearing on level up. Make it an equal chance of anything coming up, until you have two main skills. Or if anything is to pop up constantly, it should be the allied magic school. So if you're an order mage, have life magic or death magic always pop up instead of combat.

Secondly, I wish you could keep your advanced class. Elwyn eventually learned Scouting and became a Bard, which is what I wanted. Then I went to a university that tought 4 nobility skills and took them all, and became a Beast Lord which I wasn't too happy with.. After that, all the level ups would stop offering Scouting (which I wanted for pathfinding). And I wanted to remain a Bard for the luck bonus.. So my only other choice would have been to reject the nobility skills, which I don't like. Why should you have to reject skills that you want just to stay in the class you want? I eventually want to have both Scouting and Nobility advancing, but I didn't want to change class if you know what I mean. So I wish there was an option to stay as your current class, or never change class once you recieve your first advanced class.

The other problem would be becoming an archmage when you don't want to..

If you want to go solo with just your hero later on, combat skill is absolutely essential

Soloing is slow.. The combats go by much quicker when you have an army, so I never solo.

Some campains I believe make you solo, which ones would you know? I haven't played any of the campains except Nature.

If you do go solo, all you need is a Chaos Hero with Grandmaster Chaos magic, and a few good damage spells to win.

I do agree, therefore, that combat is offered much to much for a new skill.

only combat itself is offered each three levels, so your hero wouldn't die too easily, what is a hero with grandmaster life and nature magic that gets wacked to the floor in the first round? You can easily avoid this by selecting a secondary class early on in the game and keap ahead of the combat with these skills, you will still be offered combat, but no melee, archery or magic resistance.

I had the same problem.... I dotn mind combat that much because with it even a guy thats a powerhouse with magic can easily take on melee fighting like a tank! so withmost heroes I do give combat. However, I truly do not like the fact that other skills have a SUCH A LOW chance to pop up... for example, with Solymr in the order campaign, I wanted to give him a skill (forgot now) but all that always popped up was Nobility, and order magic sub-skill and another combat.

All I want is other skills to pop up a little bit more frequently, because without that its very difficult to customize your heroe...

Well, I ended up as a beastmaster, which is so useless it hurts.  I eventually got offered life magic in the second scenario, which I wasn't especially happy with either as it was a bit late for me to take advantage of it.

The nobility skills appear to be unadvancable.. at present my elwin is level 21 and has basic nobility and advanced estates, which I'm not very happy with either.  My plan was to get master nobility at least by now, so that I would be able to generate more creatures in towns.

Another problem is that you have no way of descerning how much experiance you have or need, as you did in the previous game, nor how much you gain from combat.

In all, Jenova, I agree wholeheartedly with you.. I'd also like a class lock when you reach the class you like.

Actually, if what you mean by no way of finding out how much experience you have or need is you can't find the experience needed to level up, I'm 100% sure that the game does indeed tell you the experience needed to goto the next level on the hero's stats screen.

I too am 100% sure, since all you have to do is right click on your amount of experience in your stat screen, and then you'll see how much you need to advance

I have to agree with Cat that it would be verry verry nice to see how much exp. you have gained after each combat..

It was always combat and Nature magic

But if you're playing nature's campaign with nature hero, it's obvious to me that you get offered nature magic as well. Or can you imagine a priest for example, learning fifth level chaos magic in just few days? You have to choose what you want to be:

a priest(life)
a druid (nature) !

My Elwin advanced to GM Nature without even being offered any new skill apart from combat.. This is bad.

I know combat is important, but for some classes you might not want it (for example, an archmage). You need to have more customizability options on level up. As it is, the only way to get any new skills is by learning them on the map, which is a shame. Once you get a class change, it's difficult to advance in the other skills that aren't your main.

What I'm going to do from now on is edit every map I play, and make sure to insert universities and magic shrines that offer the skills I can't get from levelling up. The only way to make a versatile hero (one who doesn't just focus on two skills) is thru these..

It is anying that you have to do that.. sometimes it's nice just to play a 'pure' map... I'm gonna be back with a little list later of exactly what my Elwin has at level 21...
