vitirr said:Animated 2D? Care to elaborate? In the dungeon town it does a progressive zoom-in travelling in which you start to see stuff that was behind other buildings. I'm no expert and I have no idea how you can animate a 2D image to look like that. It doesn't look like a parallax effect either because it looks quite progressive and I don't see obvious layers.
That doesn't mean we will be able to do that in-game though, might have been just for the trailer and we'll have a static view in-game but to me it looks 3D.
The zoom part and movement to the left and right is the parallax effect, like FirePaladin explained too, it gives the impression that there's depth to the setting. But everything is drawn in 2D and placed on different layers, so the foreground moves faster while the background lags behind. It's a very ingenious technique and I am actually so happy they went for it, it fits Heroes townscreens concept like a glove.
But from what I saw they are also animated. Flags waving, water flowing, stuff moving around, all that makes the townscreens feel more vibrant and alive. At the end of the day it's mostly static buildings and not much can be done about that, but I hope the devs are wise to add more moving effects and increase dynamism, I'd love to see that.

One way to do the animations might be to have separate animations running for different times. If you have, f.e. three animations, one of eight seconds, one one of ten seconds and one of twelve seconds, they're only going to repeat together once every two minutes (in which time, animation one will have repeated 15 times, animation two, 12 times, and animation three 10 times).
First impression was that it was a mobile title, however seeing its on Steam brings hope. I guess I'll have to get used to the new look (like I had to H5 after H3 and H4).
What I'm more interested is if this game will require constant internet connection. That might be a dealbreaker for the purchase.
I love the roster except for the spirit/banshee. There's also no vampire lords for some reason. Tier 2 unit looks like some kind of undertaker.
Death knight is epic. The helmet and armor design reminds of berserker armor ffrom berserk manga.
Yeah odd bone dragon design. I wonder ifthey'll go with deathblow for deathknight or sure death on hit like in homm7.
But I don't have only praise for what've seen so far. I absolutely hate that they didn't add stronghold, fortress and conflux/something else in the base game. I get it that software and technology have advanced lightyeara ahead from the late 90's, but this isn't a triple AAA game with insane graphics and animation. So the cost shouldnt be too high.
Its going to be even worse if dlcs wont be free. No way in hell im giving them the money for something that should have been a part of the core game

That's because it's not a bone dragon. Eugene Xaar has misleading line-up posts like this with no official source. It's basically his own idea of the faction put together from what material is out there.

Heroes 3 launched with 8 factions, so I would have aimed for 8, then add 1 maybe a year later and another 1 the year after that.
In the mean time they could do some bugfixing and add some other things.
Blake00 said:oooooh nope.. judging by this animation the town screens are indeed full 3D.. I think I can even see people walking around in the Knight one! The classic old man HoMM1 fan in me that always complains about lifeless town screens in nearly all the sequels is pleased lol.
They're about as 3D as Unfrozen's other game.
No, those are definitely animated 2D townscreens. And they look pretty sick.
Yeah judging by the footage in that German video I think my original thought about them using a Songs of Conquest and Silence of the Siren like 2D within a 3D plane diorama/parallax kind of trick for the town screens was correct after all.. they just did a damn good job of it so when the camera moves around like that it can really trick you into thinking it's full 3D lol!

Judging by the interview that has been posted above, they'll be free. As they should.

Depends on how they work them. If they introduce exclusive choices like in Heroes 4, that will massively increase replayability, despite a theoretically limited number of factions.
