No flying?
I thought it was kind of disappointing that on the adventure map, flying creatures can't even fly.. They flap their wings as if they were flying, but they still can't cross any terrain a normal ground unit can't cross.
In AOW2, flying units can fly. It's cool when you summon an Angel. They have super far movement and can go over any terrain, water, mountains, forest, etc.
As it is, flying doesn't seem to do much in HOMM4. You can fly over obstacles in combat, but that's about it. You can't even fly over castle walls even though they look so short (until you break down the door).
How about some real flight, in HOMM5? If adding flight will unbalance the game, then rebalance it. It sucks that your stack of dragons or griffins or phoenix are really just 'floating' and may as well be walking.
On a side note, some creatures on the adventure map walk so slow it's a torture just watching them (air elemental for example -- ironically, in battle they move so fast so it makes no sense really).

What does "floating" mean? Does it mean that your flying creature can fly over the guard of artifact? If that is it,it's unbalanced...

The way the creatures 'fly' is not really flying. They are merely hovering above the ground, flapping their wings as if they were flying, but their movement acts no different to a ground unit.
It would be unbalanced to change units that fly into "real flying" as it is.. but that's where playbalancing comes in.. For example, you can't fly over an enemy stack and had to fight as if you were on ground.

As you know, the flying creature could really "fly" in the beginning, but the h4team cancelled the design later.Perhaps the reason is same as the lost of fly spell. With a group of flying trooper you can launch a flash attack over the mountain between you and your enemy.

Flying over adventure map obstacles will ruin almost any map design (or at least make it much more trickier to keep you out of areas you should not be able to access).
What could be considered, however, is to remove the terrain penalty for fliers. Because it simply doesn't make sense.
And to keep it overall balanced, the removed penalty for bad terrain should also comes with removed bonuses for roads and for change of mounts (stables). These also don't make any sense for Fliers.
However, bonuses like: Rally Flag, Oasis, Trough, Equestrian Gloves, Boots of Travel, and Hero's Pathfinding bonuses could still apply to fliers.

Well, the gametype of Homm would not allow for the flying ability as in AOW2 because they are too centrally focused on towns. AOW2 is also heavily focused on towns, but its units can survive without towns for a longer time than Homm can anyway.

Really? Hmm, that's a pitty then.. Just when units no longer had to travel with heroes too, and finally you could have a completely flying stack.
