Heroes 1 Engine Remake
I want to call attention to this guy's channel for anyone who hasn't seen it. He is basically creating FHeroes2 for Heroes of Might and Magic 1 and documenting the process as he goes, and he is moving pretty quickly. I'm sure most of you have already seen it, but just in case:

Nice. But new engine creation is horrible hard work. Is it possible for 1 man?

I've seen such a project succeed with only one person. Took him 10 years or so. It's a civ clone named c-evo, maybe some of you know it.

HoMM I is a simpler game than Civilization II, and the author uses AI tools (I've never used them, so I can't tell if they really help to write consistent and bug-free code). Yet, there are certain challenges, of course. The biggest one is the game's AI. The second one is RMG. Both of those are weak in the original HoMM I, and need to be improved.

I think first thing is new units and cities especialy necropolis. Only game polishing is too small. It must be a concurent for h2-4.

It might seem so at a glance, but Civ2 doesn't have spells. I think getting the spell system to work properly will be a lot of effort.

That makes me think it will not be successful. In my opinion, AI can shift effort from coding to testing at best. But I haven't used it, too.
From my experience, sucessful projects start with writing down what exactly needs to be done. If it starts with "Let's make it like xyz and then add this and that", it will never work. I don't believe, AI will change this.

FirstHoMM - Heroes 1 Rebuild Project
Hah I was just coming here to folks know about this project but of course you're already way ahead of me haha.. here's some extra details I was gonna post in the thread..
He's been posting dev diaries and short videos on reddit here:
https://www.reddit.com/user/firsthomm/submitted/
And longer dev videos on his youtube here:
https://www.youtube.com/@firsthomm
He's quite far along now with all the maps, campaign, factions, castle building, battle screen (with QoL improvements from the modding scene like grid and movement shadow), and some early AI.
Here's his project description:
Quote: The First Hero of Might and Magic - where 1995 nostalgia meets the code underneath.
Heroes of Might and Magic I (1995) is one of my favorite classic games. The Windows 95 version finally stopped working with Windows 11, so it is time for someone to rewrite the game like fheroes2. That someone is me.
This channel pulls back the curtain on one of the most beloved strategy games of the 90s, uncovering secrets most players never knew existed while rebuilding it from scratch for modern machines - currently targeting Win 11; macOS; iOS; Android.
I'm documenting the process, reverse engineering the original game: sprite packs, map formats, animations, sound and documenting every discovery along the way. You'll see the actual code, the visual breakdowns, and a few easter eggs along the way.
This is part dev diary, part archaeology, part love letter to a game that deserved better than to stop working one day.
If you enjoyed the rich color scheme of the first game, this channel is for you.
What's cool is I recently told him about getting my hands on the very early on rails demo of Heroes 1 that has an extended intro/title sequence and some early alt assets. He excitedly analysed its files and found extra animation frames to use and even plans to possibly use the extended intro too!
What's also cool is that for years I've hoped that someone would either though some genius modding or via a rebuild project allow Heroes 1 to be played in HD resolutions (not stretching but expanding the game window allowing you to see way more of the map on a big screen) as can be done in Heroes 2 (via fheroes), Heroes 3 (HD+ mod), and Heroes 4 (Verok's patch). No many people play Heroes 1 so it didn't seem likely but this project changes things so naturally I've been pestering the poor guy about this too and he has said he intends to try which is great news.
After seeing the H3 Succession Wars mod team April fools Heroes 1 image I did some of my own mock images years ago of my dream of what a HD Heroes 1 would look like so fingers crossed this guy can make it a reality! And if not well it's still gonna be a cool rebuild that opens to door to playing Heroes 1 on modern systems with some good QoL improvements and hopefully some cool mods too.
