Is the AI in HOMM4 cheating?

Is it possible for AI to be cheating?
Sometimes it seems like it knows my castle is empty and charges right in especially when my heroes are not arround. And he is definitelly not supposed to know that since the entire territory is in the fog of war.

Yes.. it's common for AI to cheat to on higher difficulty settings rather than play smarter. Easy way out.

If the AI didn't cheat, it would be a joke, because HOMM4 takes that I out of AI.

I think he means

that the AI knows where his castle is before the shroud (opage black)has been removed... I've found this too...

I dunno, it's tough to tell if the AI has seen a small slice of your town or not.  All it takes to see an enemy garrison is a little sliver, fog of war or not.  Once you get a small section, you can see the enemy's unguarded towns from miles away...

Well, as long as the AI doesn't come out of no where and take my towns, I have no problem with AI cheating. As it stands now, the AI doesn't offer any challenge. Heroes2's AI appears to be much better.

a.i. cheating

Some ways besides obvious resource boosts that I have seen the a.i. cheat in Homm4 from most annoying to least.

1) If you have a GM thief near a.i. castle, it will fortify the castle as if you didn't have GM stealth.  Get near the castle, and though you are invisible, the a.i. heroes all come a runnin to that castle.

2) The a.i. heroes seem to manufacture artifacts and potions.  Even though there may be only one replenishing potion generating structure (i.e. mage tower) in an a.i. area, All the a.i.'s high level heroes will be loaded down with potions and artys.

3) The a.i. waits until my GM thief is far away before coming out of the castle to reflag mines.  Though the thief is invisible, you can wait in the area forever and the a.i. won't come out.  The minute you leave though, out they come to reflag the mines.

4) A.I. heroes leveling up is ridiculous.  How on earth can you come into an a.i. area with very few monster stacks cleared and find a 14th level hero.

Cheating a.i.'s are just a fact of strategy game life.

I don't mind the AI cheating as long as I can still beat him if I play better. For example if you are venturing with your main hero deep into enemy land and all of the sudden a strong AI hero appears by your main. That doesn't bother me if it doesn't happen every damn time I go > 1 turns away from my main castle. I don't mind it because in multiplayer that could also happen, how many times haven't you lost because you were stabbed in the back with your pants down?

It bothers me too that the AI ignores the stealth skill but I guess it's because it would be too easy to defeat it then. Another annoying thing is that it doesn't say anywhere that the AI ignores the skill. That just gives a feeling of low quality.

The AI may have a Ranger's Guild or similar in their castle which is how they generate potions... also, do you have an army with your stealth hero or not?  If you have an army with your GM stealth hero, s/he can still be detected.

Also AI often starts with a higher level hero, which isn't really cheating as such, to be honest.. my I suggest cheating yourself and playing without the shroud to get a good idea of how the AI works?

I have yet to see any definate proof of the AI cheating in any of my games.

If it in fact is cheating it's not very good at it either since I cramz it all the time

The AI in games always cheat so it's nothing special. In most of the strategy games he won't have a fog of war.

I had a chess game once (I guess it was called the Chessmaster) where the computer played on it's best but made randomly dumb mistakes (based on the difficulty).

I'm talking dozens of scrolls, potions of every ilk and tons of crappy artys, not the kind of stuff you get from the guild.  LOL, of course I'm not trying to stealth around with an army! I would lose my Thieves Union card.

On a side note, if you have a thief with nature magic and summoning, the thief will be frozen (until it fights the stack) and can't move if it ends a turn next to a wandering stack and summons on the next turn. IMO, you should be able to turn summoning off if you have the skill.

Granted, but as I recall, a higher level a.i. hero is not one of the difficulty parameters.  I haven't tried without the shroud, will have a peek and see.
