Name Thread

I've been getting a few ideas from some of the chaining threads that have been popping up lately, e.g. Heroes Love Club, etc., and have my own twist on that now.

Rather than saying what you like/hate about the person who posted before you, you take their username, and try and find the mythological and/or historical significance of it. If someone posts twice, try and give even more information on it than the last "name analyzer."

I know that everyone's username doesn't exactly have mythological/historical significance, but try anyway, and see what you come up with.

Have fun!

Hehe, doesn't look like this thread is destined to take off, but since my own handle has mythological links - though that is only indirectly why I chose it - I might as well make a reply.

Xenophanes (zen-off-a-neez?), ancient Greek philosopher and poet. A satirist and would-be religious reformer. Reading his views on religion and the Poets, I wonder if his ideas were an influence on Plato, born some fifty years after his death. Some similarities also to modern (or rather, post-modern) thinking, in that he denied the possibility of objective knowledge. Even a vague parallel to one of the early twentieth century European thinkers (Sartre maybe? I forget which) in his idea of the incommunicable.

All in all, he seems rather an interesting guy, who may have had a greater influence than he is generally remembered for.

Avallach, the Welsh word for apples.

Arthur went to the Isle of Avalon to heal after his final battle. However, the Welsh name for the "place of apples" is Ynys Avallach.
In Welsh tradition Avallach is the father of Morgan le Fay.
Supposedly the ruler of Avalon and demigod of the underworld.
William of Malmesbury maintains that Avalloc lived in Avalon with his daughters. Avalloc is also found in Welsh pedigrees in which he is the father of the goddess Modron; he was evidently a god himself in origin.
He is found in Arthurian romance as Evelake.

There are varying accounts of "Avallach".

I don't like your username anymore...:-P

Unfortunately, the only mention of Elric that I have been able to find is thus:

Elric--a Sorcerer/Swordsmen, featured in the books of Michael Morcock. There is believed to be a connection between this character and story and certain parts of Norse Mythology.

I know it's lame; I was expecting some Arthurian thing too.

Elric--a Sorcerer/Swordsmen, featured in the books of Michael Morcock. There is believed to be a connection between this character and story and certain parts of Norse Mythology.

I know it's lame; I was expecting some Arthurian thing too.

Elric of Melnibone, the last ruler of the dreaming city Imrryr. He was born an albino and requires large amounts of sorceress drugs to maintain his strength and life. He is the 428th ruler in direct line of descent from the first sorcerer emperor of Melniboné. Due to his weakened condition he has delved into the secrets of many sorceress books and the study and practice of herb lore to sustain himself. Through this process of self enlightenment he has developed a very curious side effect of introspective self loathing for the traditions of his empire, and his inability to fit in to the role of the traditional Melniboné emperor. He also harbors an inner desire to perhaps sway his fellow Melniboné's from some of their more unwholesome practices. Because of these opinions, his subjects find his motives to be almost unfathomable. Their opinion being that Melniboné is Melniboné. They have always ruled the world, and any tactic or pleasure they desire is to be sought out and used. Morality is something that concerns lesser beings but does not have any bearing, or add weight to any decision they may make. Elric also sees that the past glory of Melniboné is fading, complacency and stagnation have set into his culture and empire. No longer do the golden battle barges set sail for the Young Kingdoms in order to raid, plunder, and bring back slaves. No longer do they attempt to increase those lands under Melniboné domination, and demand tribute from lesser beings. The Actorios stone ring worn by Elric and passed down throughout the rain of sorceress emperors, has been studied much but used little by him, thus the ability to call on aid from the traditional patron of the Melniboné emperors, Lord of Chaos Duke Arioch of Hell, has not been sought since Elric's accession.

The many complexities of Elric's opinions, views, and attitudes, as well as the priorities of his station and traditions of the dreaming city, place him in a large moral dilemma. The main irony being, that Elric is the first emperor to ever try to apply morality to any of his decisions.

And what of the higher powers of the Lords of Law and Chaos? As we see throughout, Elric is plagued by predestiny. The many things he would like to decide and control, quite often have already been decided for him and are already controlling him. The many twists and turns provide for fascinating reading and character development.

The Rune blades: Brought to earth centuries before and wielded by the Melnibon`e emperors, these blades where turned over to the Gods and placed in the pulsing cavern when they became too powerful to control. They are known by the names StormBringer and MournBlade they have the ability to give the wielder unparalleled strength. They are also sentient and require feeding to appease them. This feeding is in the form of souls taken during battle. Many of Elric's enemies plead not to be killed by his fearsome blade, StormBringer, as their souls are sent straight to hell for eternity. Although Elric is able to overcome his genetic weaknesses, and for the first time in his life he no longer needs to ingest his sorceress potions to sustain his life, this strength is gained at the price of a symbiotic relationship with his blade. Many is the time he will regret unsheathing it, as StormBringer has a taste for friend and foe alike.

Xenophanes was a philosopher born in Colophon, Greece. When he was about twenty-five years old he left home and became a wandering rhapsodist. Xenophanes made his living this way, reciting his poems in public until he was at least ninety-two years old. Unlike most philosophers, Xenophanes wrote hexameters and elegiac like a poet. He is known as the father of satire for his criticism of traditional religious beliefs.

Xenophanes stood for religious reform. He believed that the traditional tales of the poets were directly responsible for the moral corruption of the time. He said that, "Homer and Hesiod have ascribed to the gods all things that are a shame and disgrace among mortal, stealing and adulteries and deceiving of another." (fr. 11) He sharply criticized the widely accepted polytheism of the humanized gods in the Theogany of Hesiod and Homer.

Xenophanes' philosophy outlines two major beliefs. On the nature of deity, he was a pantheist believing that God is One. His theology was more a rejection of polytheism than an attempt at developing an abstract conception of deity. His beliefs were intellectual objections to the widely accepted traditions. No evidence suggests that he regarded God with any religious feeling.

Tradition portrayed gods to have human characteristics, but he wouldn't accept this as truth. If God is in no way human, it follows that he [God] holds complete power, complete knowledge, and moral goodness. God never toils intellectually; his mind's power is unlimited. He said that God, "always remains in the same place, moving not at all, and it is not proper for him to change position from time to time." [1] Xenophanes, as a wanderer, must have longed for this sort of stability and rest.

Xenophanes held a sober belief regarding the nature of knowledge. He believed that the whole is unintelligible. This means that even if we could know the real truth, we would not be aware of it, and we would be unable to communicate it. In his Fragments, he denies the possibility of absolute and objective knowledge. In essence, only guessing is possible for man. He concludes his writings saying, "Here then let these Opinions stand- in resemblance to the reality."

Religio Romana

The Religio Romana is the pre-Christian religion of Rome. Sometimes called "Roman Paganism", the modern practice of the Religio Romana is an attempt to reconstruct the ancient faith of Rome as closely as possible, making as few concessions to modern sensibilities as possible. As with other forms of historical reconstructionist paganism, every attempt is made to rely on actual historical and archaeological evidence, and interpolations are made only when the primary sources are silent, and then we strive to be consistent with them.

Well, I think 'Romana' just means 'Roman' in Latin. Possibly best known in 'PAX ROMANA', The Peace of Rome. But since there are hundreds of titles/phrases that use it (such as the aforementioned religio...), I'm afraid we're not going to be able to get much closer than that to any specific significance.

Afallach or avallach
Celtic God of the Underworld

Afallach was the son of Nodens, God of Healing. He was one of the Celtic gods of the Underworld. He ruled Avalon where he lived with his daughter, Modron, and her nine sisters. Avalon was like the Celtic heaven, a peaceful island far away where apples grew and after which it became named. It is, of course, best known as the place where the High-King Arthur was taken after he was fatally wounded at the Battle of Camlann. Afallach himself appears in Arthurian legends as King Evelake

Elric

The story of Elric, the last emperor of Melniboné, ruler of the dreaming city and keeper of the ruby throne, brings together many images of life and death, fate versus free will, generations of tradition and the destruction of that tradition, thought versus action, evil versus good , law versus chaos, and the difficulties faced when trying to reconcile and make meaning out of one's own existence. It is also a vehicle for Michael Moorcock to expound on yet another incarnation of "The Eternal Champion", a theme that runs throughout many of his fantasy novels. On this page I hope to give a brief overview and opinion of this tragic, yet action packed series. It is certainly one of the best offerings from Michael Moorcock, and changed my views on good fantasy forever. Having discovered the Elric Saga back in 1980 it introduced me to the new idea of an anti-hero and showed me that everything does not have to turn out "OK" in every book that I read. Truly an ambitious break from the fantasy genera of his day I have enjoyed Mr. Moorcock's vision and stunning tales for many years.

Haile Gebre Selassie is regarded universally as the greatest distance runner of all times. With a career that sees him breaking records as they are made, Haile has built an extraordinary reputation as an exceptional athlete who is setting a new level in long-distance running.

or

HAILE SELLASSIE VS. MUSSOLINI
by Harold G. Marcus

"King of Kings. In 1935 there was just one man who rose out of murky obscurity and carried his country with him up & up into brilliant focus before a pop-eyed world. But for the hidden astuteness of this man, there would not now be the possibility of another world war arising out of idealism generated around the League of Nations in behalf of Ethiopia. But for His Majesty Haile Selassie, the year 1935 would have been a distinctly different year. If by some unhappy chance the Italo-Ethiopian war should now spread into a world conflagration, Power of Trinity I, the King of Kings, the Conquering Lion of Judah, will have a place in history as secure as Woodrow Wilson's. If it ends in the fall of Mussolini and the collapse of Fascism, his Majesty can plume himself on one of the greatest feats ever credited to blackamoors. - January 6, 1936, Time Magazine Man Of The Year

"Sir Elric" though I know something about.  Elric- Ruler of a empire, kinda like the elves.  A wonderful char in a series of books by Michael Moorcock.
Me, Mysia- (this kinda cheating but...) one of the Greek goddesses (or was it a dryad?) in line with the Seasons and fertility.  I didn't know that when I chose the name, now how am I gonna keep up my reputation?

Mysia
A holycity of islands, dedicated to the worship of Voya. It is a closed society, only open to indoctrinated Voyans.

Voya is the Lord of travels, treks, and of course, voyages. He guides the explorer, protects the wanderer, and assists the lost. One of the Lords of Light, Voya is believed to deliver the honorable and heroic mortalkin souls of Agyris to their rightful place in the afterworld. This is perhaps one of his most important duties since bodyless souls are doom to wander the lands alone and without the ability to go to their final "home." (Souls are said to have but 3 days to be so delivered, before they are doomed ghosts.)

Voya is also the God of persistance, determination, and patience, since it often takes years to complete an important journey of the body and of the soul. Voyans believe that such treks are intimately tied.
