Dodgy Hero Descriptions!
Does anyone else suffer the same problem? All my (male) heroes in the bleeding tavern have 5 different descriptions...and all 25 heroes or so will have one of the 5 descriptions...ie was born with a red sky? and now is looking to get back home etc...etc..then...about stealing from the rich and redestribute to the poor and then get blamed for it?
THEN u have a hero...working for you and that...then some hero in the tavern available for hire will have the same exact face or character portrait or whatever u call it..
do you know what i mean?
is this because i have the unpatches ver of homm4?
please tell me if you are indeed or not suffering from the same problem(s)...

Yaa I do,from thy same class, it is thy same portrait but with a diferent profile & name.

This happens because not only does Heroes IV have biographies that coincide with the name and portrait, but they have randomized names and biographies as well. Every blue moon or so, the real names and bios will be replaced by the randomized ones.
However, in the patches, they fix it so that the AI doesn't hire the heroes with the "real" biography, so that your heroes can actually make sense for a little bit longer.

(i bought the game its just my comp is dodgy it wont let anything install on my computer without me fiddling a bit with it first)

Is it poss that some file in your homm4 folder...holds all the hero descriptions? and you can open it and perhaps edit them!
or is it hard coded ?

That depends...
If you want to change the default bio's, there is no way I know of to accomplish this.
However, you can alter how many bios you will in the map editor (these will, of course, only apply to the current map).
Anyway, I don't see the point in having these generic bios at all. Is there any time they are more appropriate than the real ones? If so, I don't see it.
HOMMIV sucks. Play Morrowind instead. Or, what you really should do, watch the world cup 'till your eyes fall from their sockets. That's what I'm doing!

all right son
well im english/italian/portugese so of course im following me teams in the world cup...but i was gutted when we drew wiff the swedes like...
im watching all the world cup matches mate..nay worries there son...
right about homm4 its good fun like...but i havent been able to suss the editor..(to edit the hero bios...) i cant wait to see my creative mind...at work lol and creat some canny bios! reet...im off to play CM and read...morrowind reviews...

You can modify the Hero biographies. Go to http://www.heroes.ag.ru. If you can't find your way around it, or don't speak Russian, try going to http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr. You can translate the webpage, and then follow the "Files" link (or maybe it's the "Stuff" link; I can't remember).
Once you've done this, you can click on the link to download the "Resource Explorer" which will allow you to make modifications(however, it only works if you haven't updated with a patch yet).

i did what u said and i found this prog that leds u extract some data files from the game...i can edit them but i dont know how to upload it into the game...so that my heroes dont have anymore dodgy descriptions...

It's a delicate process
I can't explain it all right here--well, theoretically I could, but it would take a while...
Regardless, there should be a place where you can also download the "Plug Ins" for the Program. One of these is a table editor, which lets you edit the table of random Heroes. The other is the mod-maker, which allows you to put the edited table, saved as the same name, into a .h4r file. You will have to name the file as "updates.h4r".
For this to work, though, you can't have patched your game yet...

The bios weren't really necessary at all.. The heroes are too generic. At least in HOMM3, they would give a small starting bonus to each hero which suited their bio.. For example, a Minotaur hero being able to command his minotaur troops better (with a bonus).

I really hope they bring back bonuses in an expansion...
However, pointless bios are better than no bios.
There's a new program out, actually, that lets you edit--get this--Hero Portraits! And not only that, you can change class, gender, and biography all with the click of a mouse
You can download it from Celestial Heavens(see my thread on this for more info)

Just don't try changing the Generic Heroes to normal Heroes. I tried to, and my game screwed up and I had to re-install

Ive changed all the male generic bios...now I have all the women to do!

I havent tested to see if all of this works but the utility says failed to save when i save but it seems to save to bios...
