Pantera are watered down crap who dont know what direction they want to take with their attempted music, same as Metallica, washed up old pricks who hide their inabilities with ochestration and snow that is an attempt at some sort of blues metal. Way back in the kill/lightning/puppetz days Metallica were gods, now they just such the big one. Although I like listening to death metal like Andi esp Gorefest, Suffocation, Death, Morbid Angel type of thing, Gimme more prog type metal anyday. Dream Theatre, Fates Warning, Symphony X etc..
But what is metal and where did it come from? thats easy, Sabbath, Zepellin, Deep Purple evolved into Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and all that cool British stuff evolved into Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax Testament Megadeth etc etc, then the 90's it went troppo in all directions. Like what you will

You kidding me? I mean, I do indeed listen to Nightwish - own two albums (more great Finnish bands here!), but they sure aren't power metal. That much I know

I think that Amorphis is pretty cool but then what classification are they in? Or how about Coal Chamber? What is the scientific process of classfying a band's type of music?

Yes, Nightwish is labeled has a melodic power metal band and I do like it but most of times it sounds more like pop to me.

Who gives a damn about classifications anyway? Just listen to what you like... and yes, Nightwish are to be found in the Power metal area anywhere on the net. The only thing I don't get is where did you pick up that pop sound there?
Metal or rock, I still prefer it to Britney...

Classifications are effective in choosing a type of music one likes. Rock could be classified as Bon Jovi or as Kid Rock or as Jimmy Eats World but they are each different types of rock. Some people prefer Hard rock over rap rock and that classification helps people determine what they like and what they don't like.

Well, I'd still say Nightwish are heavy metal with slight black metal influences (at least on their early albums). One explanation to why the people who classify the bands on the net placed Nightwish under power metal would be that maybe they thought the vocalist was a guy .

If I have to explain, you wouldnt understand.
Instead, ease your mind by dropping all the b.s. labels and listening to some 'true' metal.
Pick up any old Priest album. Listen to some classic Maiden. Enjoy some ManoWar.
Can't go wrong there.......

I would say that Pantera tend towards hardcore, while Nightwish are heavy metal combined with gothic. Really, rock has an enormous amount of sub-geners, and no band fits only in one. Power metal, however, has some distinct features; it's most distinct feature are the lyrics, which are always 'medieval oriented' and Tolkien-esque imagery is especially common. It also includes in it's instrumental parts medieval instruments, such as the mandolin and so on. Power metal vocals are generally clean (as opposed to the 'growling' vocals that characterize Death Metal) and delivered by a trained vocalist; singing power metal involves more than a few high notes. Anyway, I don't wanna be a smartass and teach a lesson in types of metal, just trying to clear things up a bit. By the way, one of the best examples of power is Rhapsody; try listening to the Legendary Tales album for a taste of pure power metal.

So that is power metal - Pantera, Rhapsody and such. I HATE THAT KIND OF MUSIC - if you can call it music!
I'm more of a mainstreamer guy with tastes leaning towards calmer music.

The fact that it's loud and agressive does not mean it is not complex and/or of poor quality.

Some of my music tastes is all over the place. Punk and nu-metal is usual for me. And how many people say Pantera are not metal? In their early days people called them thrash, like the old Metallica. I know what power metal is, and some does sound similar.
