Have a limit on monsters number

I know HOMM is not intended to be realistic, but in most stategic games where you are allowed to have a pile of units (I mean combat units), there is a limit on the number of units on the same pile...

It would perhaps allow a more strategic use of garnisones and placement of units on the map...

With this point of view, the limit would be relied on the type of monster, by example :

1 hero (already done)
10 level 4 monsters, but depends on hit points...
50 level 3...
and so on...

Would be a good idea to make heroes more balanced (1 Hero can never take on 50 black dragons for example), but it would be restrictive on maps where you have to defeat a very powerful hero to win the map (that hero usually has masses and masses of units and you need months worth of your own units to counter him).

Sure, this would modify the existing scenarii, by allowing less monsters to both player and computer, but it will prevent a 'weapon rush', i.e. in most game, when your army becomes really full of mighty monsters, what is the fun to beat some pityful wandering creatures ?
The same problem occurs, as you've written, when playing a real might hero... At a time, he/she seems ridiculous compared to 50 black dragons and in those cases, only tons of immortality potions allow him/her to win the fight.
Idem for garrisonned creatures : who wants to place some monsters there when this mean dividing the potence of your army.

In the case of a limitation, when you have reached the stack limit, you could stategically leave some creatures at some places to avoid intrusions(is this english ?) in your territory...else, the best stategy is essentially to stack your monsters on a unique enormous group that will eradicate what is unluckilly located in front of it.

The game will then benefit of logistic and military strategies used in most war games but keep his main interest, i.e. enjoy to play one or a small group of heroes advancing in a story and interacting with a complete military setting...

You could do that.. but problem is, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. You split a mega huge army into several smaller armies due to the limit, and each army will become much easier to overcome, and overall that series of battles would have been easier than taking them all on at once.

Also, it increases your chances of charming them or using diplomacy.

I'm thinking that I wasn't really clear.
I wasn't talking about a strategy to have, because as you said, it is not relevent to dispatch your army, I was just thinking about game rules, i.e. the limit is fixed in the game... sure it would create problems with charm and diplomacy, 'cause the limit would be easy to get in one army so that each army would be of about the same quantity of hp...
but really, I think that an army consisting on a group of thousand black dragons seems strange to me on the tactical combat view... 'cause it has about the same size as a ridiculous group of twenty orcs...
sure, as an old player of homm games, it's an old problem in a strategical sense, but it's now relevent because heroes are now a real army group that doesn't stack...

I mean, in the old game 'warlords' I was playing on a no younger macintosh, if you know this game, you had some heroes mixed with armies and heroes could get quests and so on... but you could'nt stack monsters and so heroes keep the advantage of being a good unit that can evolve... well, in that game, monsters could evolve too, but in a lesser part.

I'm just expecting how to do a map more roleplaying style, but with the advantage to have no more of two or three heroes, if you don't boost heroes regularly, it's difficult  to get an interesting evolution of heroes, where I mean interesting in the sense where heroes doesn't get levels as a rate less frenetic...

I would be happy to see as an option of the editor the capacity to limit stacks of monsters in terms of hit points so that you don't have to control each city and each group of monsters to avoid the 'level rush' and the loose of stategical interest in roleplaying style maps.

I liked the idea very much! I only think you should have to balance it well (10 Black Dragons are much stronger than 10 other level 4 creature)

Sure, it'd be balanced as a multiple of growth rate, i.e. based on hit points, attack defense and abilities...

Or, in case of a mapmaking option, one could think of monster per monster limitation based on mapmaker choice with the opportunity of a 'balanced' limitation provided by the editor...
