Scathing review of the Heroes franchise in CGW

A full and honest review of Heroes 4 and a pre-review of M&M 9 in the new issue of Computer Gaming World.

The Greenspeak column even goes as far as recommending that their next game be called "Another steaming load of Might & Magic".

Finally, an honest review! They really tear the entire franchise up in this one. Ya gotta read it. It discusses almost everything we have complained about here.

Hey, wait a minute! Which one of you guys wrote this??

thinking about this....

We all agree that heroes 4 needed fixing, and that reviewers were not very consice about the problems in homm4.  So we should be happy about the bad review of homm4 in CGW.  But at the same time, I almost want the reviews to all be excellent, so that the gaming franchise of homm continues to grow strong.... you know what I mean?

Again,,me thinks Ves is a lil drunk)

The game plain an simple sux,,compared to H3,,
An all know it...

Ves,,,U an all of us were hoping for an improved version of H3!!,,but we all got a game that might be good in future,,

But,,it's not phuking Heroes as we know it,,
It should not be called Heroes 4,,,cause it's not Heroes 3 expanded upon and improved,,

It's a diff game called Heroes..
And as far as I'm concerned that will be the death of 3do and the heroes franchise,,

Damn,,I (as most were), praying for awesome expansion version of Homm3,,

Call it what u want but Homm4,,doesn't deserve the "honor" of being called "HOMM"

That Really sux,,(

IMO,

hotseat action

Me and Mel played another hot seat game with the maps from the cd.  Once or twice a week now we fire up another map from the cd... we're going down the list.  Besides 'playtesting' them in this way, we are having a lot of fun.   So I dont see it the way some of you do;  while me or Melissa will not touch heroes 3 (though it remains installed on the harddrive for now) we look forward to a game of homm4.

No, I wasn't playing on-line when H3 was released but played hot seat like an addict with H2 & H3.

Most peeps are resistant to change and I am certainly one of them.
I remember when I installed H3 for first time, I could't believe how much heroes changed compared to H2 and I didn't like it.
But It took no time at all and I was more addicted that I was to H2, which I didn't think possible)
Now I admit I haven't given Homm4 much of a chance, but so far it just doesn't keep my interest.
When I start an H3 game, I'm glued to my comp and can't wait for my next turn.(yes even now)
When I start a game of H4 it's not the same, anything can distract me from game.

To be fair I suppose it could be much better to play online multi-player, as I've only played the AI so far.

From what I hear H3 also had many problems when online play began?
So perhaps I will give H4 another chance and try to see the game without prejudice, but it's damn hard not to constantly make comparisons to Homm3.

Just another repeat

It seems like everyday i check the board there is a new thread to complain on.  We have all herd these concerns expressed a thouand times.  Just give it until multiplayer and shut up.

Its true for me that the homm 1-3 were games i would stay up all night playing whenever i got the chance, and homm4 does not have that efect.  I have played through every scenario single player and hotseat.  However i lost intrest in playing heroes 3 by myself years ago.

I c the possiblity for strategy in homm4 to far exceed any of the previous ones, but u need to skillful players playing.  The computer and my dumbass brother and friends just wont cut it.  But give it a chance and stop repeating complaints.

What kind of an idiot are u?
You say shut up and stop commenting on H4 cause you're sick of it,,,
Then you go ahead and give your comments?
Make up my mind)

btw,,,there's not much else to comment about these days except H4 Multi or the lack there of!

My advice is if you don't want to see others opinions be they positive or negative, just piss off and don't read the threads,,,
Or better yet start a thread of your own,,,I don't recall seeing any of your brilliant insight into anything?

Isn't that what a message board is for??,,hehe

yes there were also probs with heroes3 online when it was released, for many ppl it was even unplayable cauz of disconnects every 10 min or so.

i think mp will be fun in heroes 4 cauz i see a lot of potential here for strategies and counter strategies (many more then H3 did offer)
also sp will get better over time cauz the single player maps will get better as ppl learn how to use all the possibilities in the map editor

maps/etc.

I have noticed that the maps on homm4.org are getting better.  Played a map called "Enchantment" that has MP potential, it looks great and plays well.  Still needs some balancing, i.e. certain alignments start out a little better than others; the thief needs slightly more nerfing, but a very good map overall.

The Catch 22 with Homm4 was to develop a game that was different enough from previous to maintain interest in an old franchise, but similar enough to keep the addictive elements of the game.  They succeeded, imo.

This is not a different game, just the same game made more strategic by removing broken elements and adding lots of depth.  Homm4 maps can be made that recreate almost every element of Homm3, if that's what you really want.  For example:

If you want customized heroes, you can create and place them.  It's just that the game relies on the mapmaker to do this rather than forcing you to live with preordained (and unbalanced) specialties every game.

If you want fast exploration/movement, the lith/caravan/movement enhancers can be used to accomplish this as opposed to chaining.

etc., etc.  Homm 4 is extremely flexible, much more so than II or III.  I'm counting the days, just hope that work won't flare up and keep me from playing when the patch comes.

Yes, I kinda wish the reviews were ALL good so I could keep pretending it was just me and a few other guys that were wrong. I hate to hear the death knell for what was the greatest game I ever played

You have to congratulate CGW tho for going out on a limb with a harsh review. After all... It was one of their favorite games too.

The review goes on to say "Longtime fans are better off sticking with the 3rd Heroes or picking up Disciples 2".
How does Disciples 2 look? Anyone know?

Hi Craig

disciples 2 looks good (at least the grafics) but the changed not much from D1 only added more units (actually u have units which level up and change to other units)
u cannot move in combat and i think it has far less options than heroes 4 has. it was getting boring fast (much faster then i think heroes4 will get)

another angle

Think of this view of ur opinion of heroes4 too.  Some of us (like me anyways) was more into games and stuff when I was younger.  After 5 years of heroes 2 and 3 playing it slowly wore off so im just not as interested in games today.  So my point is that once when we were excited about a certain game maybe we have gotten older or more matured that games like this dont interest us as much anymore, so it seems like heroes4 is less interesting.

It would be different if u had heroes4 in ur hands 3 years ago!!!

Melissa has a point there..

I agree with what Melissa said, except the fact that if Heroes 4 ran as terribly as it did initially with the memory leak and all that Id hate it 3 years ago too.

But I find myself less excited about games in general than I did even a year ago.. I still play them, but I dont stay up all night, or skip going out to play them anymore. Imagine that, sometimes I used to skip hangin out with friends to play some Heroes 3 online. None of my friends liked heroes

But I will add...lack of quality games that Id enjoy after Heroes 3 prolly brought on this feeling about games overall

Hey buddy,
nothing personal,,,I'm just screwing around on msg board.
Damn,,nothing meant personal just sorta like debating.
This is where I come to have fun an maybe realease a lil bit of tension...and can sound off once in a while without having to appease anybody!!

But no PERSONAL disrespect meant to anyone at all..
Since I don't know anyone I play or chat with personally!!
