Prophecies of Doom

As most people on this forum may know, prophecies of Doom abound in the world today. However, there seem to be a peculiarly large amount of them at this time.

Nostrodamus, half of whose predictions have already come true, has his own end-of-the world prophecies. Some say they point to the year 2000, however, we can now assume that that is incorrect. Some, however, have interpreted Nostrodamus prophecies as giving a far later date for world destruction.

The Jewish Torah, Christian Bible, and Muslim Koran all have their respective Judgment Day prophecies. Furthermore, it has been stated by several Jewish theologists that they are now in a count down for their Messiah to come. He is expected to arrive within the next 250 years.

Furthermore, let us examine the Maya. The Maya had an extremely advanced system of time keeping, with an amazing calendar to match. They predicted the rise and set of the Moon thousands of years into the future. Today they are only off by a matter of thirty seconds.

The Mayan Calendar also predicts that on December 22, in the year 2012, the world as we know it will come to an end. Keep in mind, however, that they are off by about 30 seconds.

Lastly, Native American tradition, especially some from groups located in Alaska, also gives a prophecy of a great change in the world. This time, however, it does not prophesize doom, but rather change, for the better. It encourages people to prepare, and aim towards understanding of this.

I ask you:

What does all this mean?

It is clear that many, many cultures have prophecies of great change that all point to time that is to come relatively soon, in some cases, in some of our lifetimes. What is going to happen? Doom or Salvation? Change for better or for worse?

I ask you:

What do you think?

well, thruout time, people have predicted that "the end is near"  I dont believe anyone knows when this will occour, but i have to aggree with your statement;

<The Mayan Calendar also predicts that on December 22, in the year 2012, the world as we know it will come to an end. Keep in mind, however, that they are off by about 30 seconds.>

although if it had been predicted several thousand years ago by the mayans, or the aztecs, it would have been damn nice of them to leave us a written text explaining why or how it all ends there.

but, considering, NOONE will get out of life, alive, it probably isn't too much to worry about, just consider it as a natural part of life, and when it comes, you can look at it and smile.

Once a I saw a book that makes a comparison between a lot of important events in diferent religions and one of that events was doomsday. I can't remember exactly what it said but I can tell that there are a lot of similaraties betwen a lot of very diferent and geographicly distant religons that make me think that some things are not has unpredictable has we may think.

Exactly. Someone like, oh, say--Return of Soth--might say that this is simply a bunch of mumbo jumbo, but if you have Mayans, Abrahamites(I'm using this to refer to Jewish, Chrisian, and Muslim individuals, seeing as those three religions, according to tradition, came from Abraham), and Native Americans all have things telling of some great change, all pointing to this time in history, you have to wonder:

Is it independant invention, cultural dispersion, or something we should be aware of?

To start with, I would not be surprised if most religions shared the concept of the world, at least as we know it, ending. It's fairly fundamental - either the world will continue as it is, with all of it's problems, or a God/spirit/deity will eventually step in to change things, whether through destruction/judgement/renewal or whatever. So I'd guess that some form of eschatological doctrine would be pretty much inherent - at least in the serious religions.

As for them agreeing on the timing of such an ending, here I'd be very skeptical. Firstly the Abrahamic religions. In the Christian Bible, I can tell you, there is no time or period given. Various people have made guesses in the past - notably the JW/LDS sects, and have repeatedly got it wrong (obviously). If someone's making another guess now, well, that's all it is - a guess. As for the Jews, this isn't the first period when they've been expecting their Messiah either. One was, as it happens, when Jesus was alive, and there have been several others since, I think. So nothing unique there. I'm not sure about the Muslims... I'd guess that their beliefs would be similar to the Christian in this, but I'd be interested to hear anything to the contrary.

Nostradamus... well, I think most claims for the fulfillment of his prophecies require a rather significant leap of faith. You've probably heard this before, but I'll say again anyway that most of his prophecies are too vague to be considered truly predictive, and that such specific details as they do contain are inevitably wrong. You can take his writings and say 'well, he could have meant this', but it's really only idle speculation.

I haven't heard of the Native American prophecy you mentioned, so I can't comment on that. Do you have any more specific information, a link or something?

And finally...

Well, at least they're specific. But my guess is that their astronomers got so damn tired of working out moon phases for future centuries, that one of them had the bright idea of prophecying the end of the world at wherever he was currently up to .

Prophecies of Doom
The aztecs really fit into this group, having taken a comet as an omen of there doom and many such other things like it. The weird thing is that it came true as they thought the spanish were white gods so sealed there own fate and brought true there own prophecies. It did not take that long for 19 million of them to be wiped out by diseases brought with the spanish and wars.

another interesting tid-bit about the mayan's culture, not only did our calander come from their charts, but the sport of soccer also, it was used as a way to settle disputes, and wars.  It seems that when one side lost a match, their heads were used next, in leiu of a soccer ball.

Bugger.  I guess we better exchange Christmas presents early that year, then.

The religious texts known as "Nature" claim the year 4,023,435,674 as the year the world will end (on a Thursday, if you're wondering).  These sentiments are echoed in the scripture of "Journal of Modern Physics" and a remarkably similar notion is described in the cult scrolls of "Popular Science."  They all describe a mysterious entity known as "Solar Nova" who will consume the Earth with burning flames.

On the other hand, the Public Transportationists are vague on the exact date, claiming its going to be more of going out with a choking whimper as oxygen is used up to propel strange devices known as "automobiles" while the disappearance of the archangel Ozone leads to a scourge of cancer toppling the kingdoms of man.

A small sect known as SALTs Witnesses claims that man will destroy himself in the hellfire of Plutonium.  Of course, we all know they're nuts because man is much too rational to destroy himself.

Strangely enough, all of them agree that the bunnies are the ones that inherit the Earth.  Who knew?

Fire shall rain from the sky
And angels of death will fly down from the heaven
To cast down the Divine Justice
All sinners will be engulfed in the heavenly flames
And they will suffer the pain not known before in the world
And then thy Earth will be cleansed and the utopia will be started
And the world will be ruled by the leader of the angels of death
By the most disgraceful angel of death
And that will be the new beggining...
The reign of chaos...
Because "A catherpillar first becomes a cocoon before becoming a butterfly."
And so the world will finally be cleansed...

My good friend Xenophanes. (good? friend?) I am all for the destruction of Earth, especially if it is by our own stupity (global warming, nuclear war, yada yada yada).

I just hope it happens when I am an old woman.  But many, and most, cultures believe the world will be destroyed by Armegeddeon, fire, new stars/suns, that could also be said to be nuclear warfare.

If Pakastan and India both tried to kill each other using nuclear bombs it would take only five minutes from take off to exploding.  So it would be fiery pit of hell.  And as you told me today the Maya said that the way the earth would end would be a new sun.  Sun...Star...Flaming comet...Asteroid...crashing into Earth.

Then you have the global warming.  The greenhouse effect.  One result of global warming would be that the temp. would rise and because of this forest fires would be more frequent, thus creating more carbon dioxide and then because of that the temp. would rise more and so on... That would be firey kinda world wouldn't it? So there U have the end of all the theories that come to mind at the moment.
I NOT HEARING APPLAUSE!!! ok nevermind.

A little clarification on the New Sun thing...(btw Mysia, I like the new avatar)

The Maya prophecy does not entirely specify destruction...jsut the beginning of what they call "The Fifth Sun." Currently, we are in the Fourth Sun(no duh). The whole Fourth>Fifth Sun thing is almost along the same lines of the Aztec "Time of the Jaguar" thing.

Thanx. But that is not what U said.  I am a philosopher of a sort, remember I study history of language and mythology.  So there is also the idea of the Norse that states that the world will end when Oden dies and the war of the gods starts.  I am not religeous so if there really are gods then a war would be a fitting end. But that myth also involves a lot of fire. So the reasons I stated above would be fitting.

Interesting. I never heard of a Norse Doomsday prophecy, but I suppose that most, if not all, religions have one. Isn't that, after all, one of the main reasons discussed on this thread for being a little less ignorant about these things?

Anyone know of any other cultures that have prophecies like this that haven't been mentioned yet?
