The english Guardian - Begorrah

An example of how the Guardian often puts a spin on a story in order to give
the left-wing members of the British middle-class something to scoff and be
outraged about while having their mid-morning tea and scones.

http://books.guardian.co.uk/guardianhayfestival2002/story/0,11873,729467,00.
html

By all accounts, "Hinterland", is a badly-acted piece of theatre that sets
out to ridicule Charles Haughey's glory years but ends up falling on its
ass. The Haughey-story has been done countless times before; some funny,
some just plain boring. This particular effort, by Sebastian Barry, is
ostensibly supposed to have some sort of commentary about the modern Irish
diaspora woven into the play's satire but just ends up coming off as yet
another bad "lets make fun of Charlie" play with the main characters renamed
- ho ho ho, that's what makes it satire ho ho ho.

Unfortunately for Barry, the play's crap. Practically ALL the theatre
critics slammed it as such - so what does Barry do? He runs off to his
English-liberal friends in the Guardian and feeds them a story which they
entitle "Backlash left Irish writer in fear". In fear of what they don't
specify.

In fear for his career might be true; given the slating he got. However,
comparing himself to a writer living in a totalitarian regime - with its
implication of crowds of marauding Irish ignoramuses - is just plain
ridiculous!!

But of course the Guardian are masters at telling the English middle-class
how great and good they are and what a jolly well liberal you are sir.

They have a sinister side which is just as xenophobic as their tabloid
counterparts. Instead of villifying entire nation's cuisine, dress and
sports, however, they simply imply that countries other than England
desperately want to be civilised like the English but just can't quite
manage it.

Try as they might, society breaks down to reveal the true savages they are.

This is especially true in articles related to Ireland, the US and any other
country that was once a colony!

Part of the reason I dislike Robert Fisk(he writes for the Independent) is  the typically Guardian-like tone
in some of his articles; sometimes you can almost picture him lifting his
pith-helmet to scratch his head and extol the wonders of the noble
savage....

More seriously, I also despise the sort of reporting you talk about. In the last couple of years, I've just stopped bothering much with the news media. Most of it is inane, trivial fluff that seems designed for little more than to fill up space/time. Except for editorials of course - their main purpose is to inflate the egos of their writers. Oh, I know I'm being overly cynical - there are some good journalists, but there's just too much dross.

You are so right... at work from now on, in the staff canteen, I will replace "The Daily Mirror" and  "The Sun" with "War And Peace", "Gone With The Wind" and "Tess of the D'urbervilles".. lmao.

If you can get so worked up about a newpaper article, it proves that it's working..

PS what, pray, is wrong with the left wing?

My issues with the left wing stem from a flagrant disregard of the ideals that epitomise what leftist politics . How can you justify to me that there is a true left in the UK or Europe. It simply doesn't exist.

What we have is are wolves in sheep clothing masquerading as leftist politics. For ****'s sake I have seen Tony Blair extole the virtues of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, diplomiacy aside what's that about. Also what about his policies at home the party reneged on their pledges and they pander to the middle road.

It's just smoke and mirrors.

BTW "The San" is most of time far more entertaining than the broadsheets. Mostly.........

They have a "new" clause four.... *muted mumbling is heard in the backgroud*

Associating New Labour with the left wing is like associating chocolate with weight loss.
