Yes, I used to play it in tournaments when Tempest and Urza cycles were in type 2. Albeit I don't play it much now, I think it is the best game in the whole world.

I played back in the early days(ish) just after the legends set came out, then we had The Dark expansion, then Fallen Empires, Then the Ice Age standalone set which introduced us to some great cards/combos (never forget the necropotence decks) but then wizards, as all companies do, got greedy and started ripping out the expansions. I think I bought cards up to Stronghold expansion, then it became too much. To keep up, you had to buy cards. And with new expansions every 3 months, it was impossible. I agree, it is a magnificent game, I just wish it had have slowed down a little, I would still be playing

Before Balance was banned off the planet, I saw this balance/pox deck which wiped me out of a type 1 tourney, never seen its like and never will again properly.

I'm still playing a lot!!!

I have a white deck with longbow archer, serra zealot, soul warden, congregate, glorious anthem, serra's embrace, serra angel, swords to plowshare, and disenchant. I believe that's everything.

I also have a red deck with lots of good small red creatures. It has 1/1 for 1 mana creatures like, raging goblin and mogg fanatic. I also have 3 mana creatures like Uthden Troll and Balduvian Barbarians. Then because I have a lot of creatures I play Mob Justice, Falter, and Keldon Warlord. I'm still looking for Marton Stromgald, but what can ya do. I also want to get some Granite Gargoyles or Dragon Whelps preferably Granite Gargoyles.

When Magic first came out, I played alot with some of my friends.  I live in the Seattle area (where Wizards is(was) based) so I went to a company sponcered tourney about 7 years ago.  Got my butt kicked, I played a white supremacy deck but I got viced/racked.  Anyways some of us losers were in the lobby and played a huge 10 person circle game.  We all anted up a rare card, my friend and I sat next to each other, watched each others back and wiped out the table.  I was a great time, and I got some good cards out of it.

We used to play 5 man star games all the time, but cards kept coming out and it got too expensive to maintain good decks.  I haven't got into the old cards for years now, I am waiting for my kid to grow a couple more years and I'll start playing with him.

Great game, is the computer game any good?

I don't know. One of my friends has it, but I never bothered to borrow it. Although I do have Magic Suitcase. You should download it from here.

http://www.dragonstudios.com/suitcase/files/Suitcase50b15/sc50b15.exe

It has a database of every magic card up through 6th edition and the Urza's.

You can create your own database from the cards you have. (This can take a while, but if you do 1 letter of the alphabet each day it won't be that bad.)

I'm still on letter "O"

I've been lazy.

I don't think there are much point to collect cards. I rather make and collect good decks. Having a good deck is almost half of the victory.

Rychen, there have been lots of cards that have turned out to be too powerful. Some of them like Tolarian Academy has been banned from most tournament types and restricted in Type 1. Even simple search cards like Crop Rotation (one green mana instant that enables you to search for land from your deck and put it into the play if you sacrifice a land) have turned out to be too powerful in Type 1 and it has been restricted. Then there have been made cards like Anvil of Bogardan and that green enchancement against cards like Stasis and Necropotence. And lots of decks have dominated Type 2, like ones built around Oath of Druids.

Btw, has anyone played MtG the emperor style?

Emperor is really fun.

The reason that you collect cards, isn't for the cards, but to trade for the cards that you want to go into your decks. I always start out by trading for the base cards for every color.

Base cards = Llanowar Elves, counterspell, Air Elementals, Sengir Vampire, Tundra Wolf, Soul Warden, White Knight, Longbow Archer (one of the best in the game), killer bees, wooly spider, black knight, unholy strength, etc.

Without these cards, it's very difficult to make a good deck. These cards would probably be good additions to just about any deck. (As long as it fits the color)

My favorite multi-player (3 or more) game of magic is definately 2 headed giant.

I've a lot of cards but haven't played it much. There was an old PC game made by Microprose I believe which had cards up to about 4th edition. It's several years old by now.

My own cards are from Ice Age/Homelands to the end of the Urza cycle or thereabouts.

I believe the cycle I like the most is Mirage, Tempest and Ice age cycle are both Ok, but after that it feels they are churning out the expansions too fast, and the new ideas are not all that innovative any more.

My signature is from the Card "Illumination" in the Mirage stand-alone set.

I've played M:tG a lot, but only Multi-Player. We (4 friends and myself) used to play it every week.
Strategies were very different from a one-against-one game of course: We used to play with decks of more than hundred cards, with Mana Flares, Howling Mines, etc.:Fun cards.
Sometimes there were 4 Howling Mines in play, so huge decks were necessary!
We also participated in a couple of sealed deck tourneys: Ice Age, Mirage.
We started when Fallen Empires just got out. Still have all my cards. (I even have a 'Blood of the Martyr' T-shirt!)

back in the old days...

i love magic...used to be an addict...couldn't do without at least 4 hurs of gaming everyday(while i was still at school) ....and i m not joking...

i started around 4th-ed and just gave up around strnghold..

i loved my first tourney deck..it was a red-green weenie burn with some beat ups provided from earnies...to toast my opponents i used lightning bolts, incenerates and fireblasts...and use giant growths to prevent my being toasted.
i can usually end up with a 15 damage+ per turn to my opponent. the games usually finish in less then five turns...
i played this deck in my first tourney...the judge cam at us urging us to start after the tourney began 5 min ago and i just told him we finished our game already!...he was speechless and went away pretend nothing happened...

a few weeks ago judgment came out and we saw the comeback of earnies...i might just come back...u never know...

oh btw..is the online version called apprentice or something?

Apprentice is a freeware, and it is quite old by now. Wizards has been making online version of MtG, where you can play different kinds of magic (duels, allied, emperor, tournaments, etc.) with "electronic" boosters.

That Microprose product's, while good at beginner's standard, didn't had AI that could seriously challenge a player who has been playing in more serious tournaments. The design of computer opponent's decks were bad also. But the main flaw was that there wasn't enough cards from different settings.

RedSoxFan, I could comment your list of base cards to get but I'm not going to. Never advice the one you are going to trade with.

I don't know why people stopped playing when the Tempest came. IMO, it was by far the best MtG cycle. Especially Byback was a succesful function.

You think that Mirage and Ice Age are good?!!? Those are 2 very over-rated additions by EVERY veteran player I have met. I just recently convinced them that the edition was bad by showing them the card listings. It's horrible.

The problem with those editions, is that you have some unbelievably good cards there, like Shadow Rider, Fyndhorn Elves, Marton Stromgald, Suq'ta Firewalker, Jester's Cap, etc. But, if you really look closely at the rest of the cards, THEY ARE COMPLETELY USELESS. THEY COULD NEVER GO INTO ANY OF MY DECKS. NEVER!!!!!

If you take a look at 4th edition, tempest, or Urza's Saga, you see those unbelievably good cards like Congregate(I usually gain 35+ life from this!) Blanchwood Armor, Mox Diamond, Altar of Dementia(This goes great with Reins of Power) Death Pits of Rath, Eladamri, Lord of Leaves, Goblin Bombardment, Glorious Anthem, Serra Avatar(goes great with Congregate and Spirit Link) Child of Gaea, Contamination(obviously used with a Breeding Pit) Gaea's Embrace(the best green enchant creature) Intrepid Hero.

The difference between the 2 editions is that the filler cards in Urza's Saga are much more usable in good and bad decks. Some of the truely bad cards are

Sirocco:
http://www.magictg.com/detail.asp?card=2329&type=M
The problem with this card is that it will only go into a sideboard for playing against a good blue deck that has a lot of counterspells. But a good blue deck will always be able to counter something and should have a card from urza's saga seen here:

There is a rule for having decks under 40 and over 80. Tournaments require 60 cards with an optional sideboard of 15 cards. If you decide to add in the sideboard you must add in ALL of it. But for casual play you can use 40. Most of my friends use 40 cards unless there isn't enough room for all of the cards they need in the deck. If I have any problems in my deck with 40 cards I just add in 3 or 4 of each card that I need to fix the problem and make somewhere around 50 cards.

No I'm not thinking of Apprentice, I'm thinking of Magic Suitcase, you can make a database of all of your cards. I did. This way I can play test decks against pre-existing decks to see if they will work or not.

Cards are useless when they dont fit into your decks? heh open your eyes dude. This game is cyclical, cards become good, cards die out, it all depends what new cards come out to use them with. You spoke to veterans huh? then veterans will tell you that the card to have for 2 years was necropotence. Necropotence dominated the tourney scene. Prison decks, Weenie decks, Library rush decks, they come and go, but Necro was THE card.

The other thing is that a card like Marton Stromgald was worth sweet F.A back then, so its worth something now? just like all cards. It comes and goes all in a cycle. People didnt know balance was a power card for 3 yrs, then it went berserk and was banned. Good players discover new combos for cards that seem useless, so dont bag em just because you dont use em.

BTW dont hit me with any new cards (ie more than 3yrs old) because I wouldnt know lol.

When Balance first came out I used it in a White supremacy deck, killed all the other decks at the time, but it wasn't used by many people.  Nothing was more fun than lettin a guy bring out his stuff and slowly kill me, then boom balance clears the field and swarms of knights and lions and birds start attacking.

I'm not sure to whom you addressed that reply, rychen, but what I meaned by collecting cards was that there is no much point trying to collect every card from different sets. Who needs cards like Thallids anyway unless they are planning to put them to fun decks?

Wizardboy, I had a stompy that was able to beat opponent in three turns and a suicide black that was able to do so in two turns (2xDark Ritual, 2xSwamp, Sacromancy, Hatred).
I had a fun game with Stompy against Blue Control. I started. First turn: I played forest and Wild Dog, opponent played island. Second turn: I played another forest and two Wild Dogs more, opponent was shaken and played another island and Powder Keg. Third turn: I played third forest and Choke, opponent gave his resign.
