Should Heroes Fight ?

Hi, all,

Having some discussions with Malkia, Ironied etc in other threads about heroes fighting in a battle, I would like to know other people's opinion on this issue:-

Should heroes DIRECTLY take part in a battle i.e. should they fight, kill and got killed in a battle ?

1). Yes, this would be interesting !

2). No, it is a bad idea, just keep things as now !

3). Well, it may work, but something have to be fixed.
   (for example.......)

4). None of the above.

Please share with me your idea. Thanks.

Yes!
so I guess put me down for #1 (why didn't you just start a poll thread though?)

As for ideas, you can see mine in another thread: "one thing that bothers me (because Heroes now can be part of your army)"

I've tried to use a new poll but it seems not work and I don't know why. Perhaps I should think of a more attractive topic name like "Honorable Death of Heroes"....

Another Idea

I think that it woudl be nice to have the heros fight. There could be another option on the staus bar having your hero come out and fight. And, if you lost all your units, you could have your hero fight instead of having to lose the battle completely.

It may work but the gameplay will change completly

its a 3.

if heroes are in battle i don't know how the folling things still would be guilty.
heroes abilities (attack, defense, moral, luck, skills) influence the creatures in the army. (cause hero can die)
hero can cast spells (not if he is dead).
hero gets artifacts of his opponent (not if he and his opponent dies in battle, also what happens to the creatures then when both heroes die. they have no leader do they run away now)
who gets experience points of the battle

and one big question: why do all think heroes in battle makes h4 so much more interesting in the strategie part. there are many other things that do better. (the need of transporting ressources, the influence of weather in the adventure and battle part, (like wind on the sea ... ), eagle eye, disguise on the adventure part, and so on. these things are also part of the strategy not only the hex-battle.

I would think that, like in chess, if the hero dies, the whole army runs away. Throughout history armies have always fled once their leader was gone, why not in this game? I doubt beholders and minotars would still continue the fight.
As with the strategy part, there still woudl be that essence, at leat I woudl think so.
For an idea, if you had your hero come out and fight, let's say half of his stats (attack, defense, knowledge, and spell power I think) would still remain. Also only half of his army woudl remain and fight. He would be a regular unit without all the good stuff. I think it woudl be more or less like a last option kind of deal.

Then the artifacts lie on the adventure map and everone can put them up or something like that?????

Go play Age of Wonders and tell me how you liked it compared to heroes3.

Not a good point about age of wonders at all.  One of the best and most interesting parts about that game is the way they handle heroes...better than homm in my opinion.  More interesting.

However, the battles in that game, as well as building and the maps do not compare at all.  Plus homm has more interesting creatures.  AOW is just a much simpler game, but heroes fighting is a very exciting part of it.  As it is in masters of magic.  Having different heroes with different spells and fighting abilities all in one battle is very fun.

I've noticed that some people here just fear change and fear that if something major is altered by 3do that they will not compensate.  That is unfortunate because homm3 is far from perfect and I am very excited that some major changes are being made.  I like heroes fighting and having monsters move without heroes and a different magic system, and different and more varied building paths for towns...with more choice involved.  More choice and more strategic options are good not bad.

Keep the game playable and fast paced but do not keep the game static.  Keep up the good work 3do.  I can see where you are headed here and it looks good.  Its obvious you know what you are doing and what changes will make the game even better.

Both dying?

Ironied,
I don't really think that both heros would die. There can be close calls but...not so much that they both die. The artifacts would go to the victor. If the victor then dies in another combat against a roaming party, then the artifacts would go to that roaming party. So far, I haven't been in a battle that has both heros dying. If the battles are still turned based, then their must be a victor.

why not?

I don't really think that both heros would die.

even in heroes3 it was possible that both hereos died. shackles on board, i killed all his creatuers, he had 200% more spell points than me and summonded earth elementals all the time until my creatures where dead. at the end both hereos disappeared.

in h4 this goes much easier. i kill his hero with my dragons he kills my hero with his titans. end of the story.

Not if you tried to play aow over the internet with at least 4 players. each player had several individuall heros walking around the card. each hero was important to him. one turn took about half an hour not to say how long battles took. if a player needs more than 5 mins for a turn you can forget the game. and aow had endless turns.

I don't think that a person would send his hero into battle (if he could) when the odds were against him.

I'm for number 3 but something has to be done though such has:

Heroes must have lots of HP. (secondary
skill and primary skill  we would now have atk, def, spell pwr, knowledge and life) 1pts
in life  = 100 .... the secondary skill
would be basic stamina 25% 50% 100% and
basic recovery stamina 10hp/day,
20hp/day,40hp/day . When heroes would not die
(such a harse word   they would just be not
be able to fight anymore and monsters would
lose their bonuses especially morale bonuses
and the hero's hp should not be recovered
from battles instantly just like regular
monsters. They would have to go to places or
events  Artifacts would be created something
like "battlegarb of endurance" that would
increase stamina. Weapon for heroes should
be of choice with the professions:  i.e.
archery related professions should use be
better with bow than a barbarian with a
sword.... Don't know about the fight speed
of thoses heroes though. New buildings like
resting places should be in towns and on
maps.

Good point. Maybe the surrender option should be modified. The hero woudl still remain on the map for such amoutn of gold. That always bugs me. That was off the subject but....
Heros would have to have modified stats, and maybe consequences. Perhapes he coudln't cast spells or monever troops to the best of their ability. Historicaly this was so for the commander wouldn't be able to see his troops. Whiel the hero is one the field, the moral and luck is enhanced, but other stats aren't. So, in the end, it wouldn't be in your best interest to send your hero out.
