Quality mapmaking is an extremely time-consuming process. Mapmakers first need to get to grips with game tactics, units, structures, etc. But the main problem is the map editor itself: unlike the H3 editor, right-clicking on an artifact or structure will not tell you anything useful about the selected object; in addition, since the game itself is far more complex than H3 it is quite obvious that making a good H4 map is much harder than making a good H3 map.

Not to worry, though: H4 sucks big time, so just ditch it and go back to H3 - I'm sure there are plenty of excellent user-made maps you haven't played yet. And don't forget the WoG (Heroes 3.5) expansion

Well, personally I would strongly object to having to download a massive .zip file packed with dozens of maps. Since most people prefer quality over quantity (or don't they?), the various Heroes sites offer you map lists where you can see at least the basic features of each map before downloading it. As far as I'm concerned, a good 75% of user-made maps really suck the big one so I guess you can figure out yourself what you risk having to deal with by downloading a huge, map-packed file.

Little rant: maybe if players were to provide mapmakers with more feedback, the latter would be more inclined to spawn other, increasingly better maps. Making a solid XL map can easily take up to six months and include 200-300 hours of playtesting plus dozens and dozens of e-mails between the mapmaker and the playtester(s). So for all you map junkies out there, please take the time to drop the mapmakers a line - even something like "Hi, nice map, bye" or "Hey, your map sucks ass, go die mutilated" would be appreciated

I agree with both of you. Maphaven, and celestrial heavan (CH, I think) are the onlyone's I would download zip's from though. They're map's are playtested, but there's so few, a couple of extra click's isn't a big deal.

With the site's that have 100 map's, I wouldn't want that many "mabey good mabey bad" map's in my personal directory.
Then again, I could singly extract them and playtest myself?
Not a bad idea. beta's, improvement's, v1.0-1.9-xx1.09 ect..
Those would need to be cleaned out of the zip right away.
Should be off the site now, except the good version's..

Anyway's!! Contact web administrator's. Praise valerie for letting us talk about it too.

I agree quality is better than quantity but even when the maps are not in one big zip file you can never know how good or bad they are.

I also agree to the notion which webmasters should put all the good and new maps into one big zip file every two week or so...

New Maps for Heroes IV

Hello,
There are currently 30 new maps for Heroes IV at “Heroic Corner” (http://heroes.ag.ru/maps/). The Site is mainly at Russian, but the navigation at the map database is quite clear. Please submit your own maps via E-mail: heroes@ag.ru.

If you are looking for SinglePlayer maps, I would like to highly recommend you the map “Life on the Volcano” (L, 2 layers) which can be downloaded from “Heroic Corner” (http://heroes.ag.ru/maps/).

It is a great challenge and funny! You are starting with Dark Priest (Life Magic + Death Magic – two opposities!) without any towns whereas each of 5 computer players has originally 2 castles. There are quests, script events, storiline, of course, etc.

Hard to Make

I agree that it's much harder to make H4 maps than H3 maps.  I want a map to look natural ... aesdthetically pleasing.

H3's editor was so mimple, comparatively, that there was no way to get really natural-looking maps.  So, you did the best you could, and didn't sweat the result.  It was quicker.

The vegetation in H4 is beautiful (tuft, baby, tuft), and it takes a lot, lot longer to make a map placing one tree at a time, especially if you don't put a lot of the exact same trees right next to one another (which looks unnatural).  Plus, the scripting is excellent on the quest huts.  You can do a lot of really cool things, but, again, it's time-consuming to make and test these.

All the same, I love the new editor (with the admitted exception that one can't tell what a structure is or does when you right-click on it).

Regarding no right-click:

I've found the Prima Guide to be immensely helpful when I want a general idea of what something does, artifacts as well as structures.  For a free resource, [a href="www.h3trio.com"]H3Trio[/a] also lists this sort of stuff.  It's a nuisance to have to look everything up, but it beats having to playtest it all yourself.

[Edit:  Argh, that's ugly!  How do you do clickable links?]
