Arrogance

This is an annecdote I read somewhere

An american task force was travelling through the North Atlantic at speed near to the canadian coast. Suddenly a blip appeared on the radar, directly in the path of the task force. The Admiral of the force, upon being informed immediately hailed on radio the blip. He asked the blip to kindly move out of the way of his oncoming fleet. A canadian voice replied "I'm sorry we are unable to do that". The american replied "Well this is not a discussion, it would be too much trouble to redirect this force YOU will have to move" The canadian replied "I'm sorry I refuse to comply". An incensed American Admiral replied "Look I am a Admiral in the United States Navy and I have with me 1 carrier, two destroyers, 4 frigates and numerous smaller ships YOU WILL MOVE OUT OF OUR WAY!"

The canadian replied "I'm sorry we are a lighthouse...... your move"

There is no record of the American reply, but I assure you they moved!

...hehe, I've heard a slight variation of that before
However, it seems not to be so much arrogance rather than a misunderstanding.

would have been cool if they accidently blasted the lighthouse to smithereens and then had no light and one of the destroyers that was leading it was ran aground and some of the smaller ships got lost at sea while some of the planes on the aircraft carrier went to look for help but got lost and ran out of fuel and had a watery grave and the other destroyer and the carrier collided with each other and the carrier went down like the titanic its entire ass straight in the air and when it was rising up into the air it scraped one of the frigates tearing a huge dent in it and three remaining ships sent out people  in lifeboats to go look for survivors but then the survivors pulled the lifeboats over
that would be arrogance

RMS You misunderstand me it is meant to show the Canadian leading the American Along, sort of come on you think you rule the waves do you? From what i read the American was acting smug and superior, hence the arrogance of him assuming that because he was the larger force the Canadian will move.

This unverified "anecdote" from "somewhere" clearly demonstrates that Americans always act smug and superior and that they will always get their comeupance from their politer Canadian neighbors.

Hey it's a annecdote I only wanted to give you guys a laugh not debate american arrogance and american-canadian rivalry! Lighten up, not every joke relating to a nation has to be (insert nation) bashing!

Seriously no offense meant to Americans. Sorry guys but I read it around about 5 years ago in a reference library and have never seen the book again

Since some of you took offence to the alleged anti american content of the last one here are some about Britain and others.

Britain

"The Boers are not like the sudanese, who stood up to a fair fight. They are always running away on their ponies".

General Kitchener, 1898

The British Idea of fair play was to mow down the enemy whilst they stand up in open ground with machine guns and rifles. Hiding behind rocks and trees was not playing the game!

"are you aware that that is private property? Why you will ask me to bomb Essen next"

The air secretary of Britain showing startling niavity in 1939 over a request to bomb the Black Forest.

France

"The experiment has been conclusive. Our method has been tried out. I can assure you that Victory is certain".

General Robert Nivelle 1916

In 5 days of his grand offensive 120,000 frenchman were shot down and mutiny was rife

"The Ardennes is inpenetrable...... this sector is not dangerous"

FM Henri Petain showing his lack of understanding of basic geography just 6 years before the Germans shattered the French by attacking straight through the Ardennes.

Germany

"The duty of the soilder in Stalingrad is to be dead"

Who else but Hitler

And anyone who wants to know - The Guiness book of Millitary Blunders.
