Strategic gameplay Vs. Graphical monopoly

As you all know from my previous thread, I don't really like heroes 4. It's not that it's a bad game but I think the graphics get the better of it. As for strategic gameplay, the heroes version that comes to mind is HOMM2. Even though this game did not have the same graphical monopoly as heroes 4, it provided me with ages of strategic fun.

In Heroes 2, when picking a hero, the first thing that springs to mind is the heroes special ability. Like chain lightning and blood lust. Such inmaginative spells and abilities do not apear in HOMM4 and so I do not spend a great deal of care in chosing my heroes.

In heroes 4, all the lands and castles are dark and gloomy like so many other games before it. The thing that stood out about heroes 2 was the great variaty of lands and castles even though there wasn't much to chose from. The castles varied from airy fairy to dark and excitng(not dark and gloomy)

I can understand why people would buy heroes 4, I myself would have bought it. Everyone wants to complete their collection.

This looks like a topic for Lands of Axeoth, (Impressions instead of suggestions/wishes).

Anyway, I'll let it remain in Altar for a while to see how it developes.

When it comes to strategy H4 offer more strategy than the previous installments. However, H4 also offers less choices when it comes to town types and levels of creatures. Unforunately, much of the strategy there is in H4 is lost in play vs. the AI, because the AI is playing very poorly.

And because of the bad feature of always offering Combat at "low" levels hero, flexibility/strategy choices for hero development are overall removed from the player and instead depends on the map and the tuition structures. (You can develope any advanced class with Combat but if you want an advanced class excluding combat, you might never get the relevant skills offered.)

The special ability is now a choice of class. So instead of the special ability you get to choose between six classes of heroes. When it comes to balance this is probably better, but the lack of flexibilty within the heroes classes is not good. You can choose gender, back ground info and name, but none of these affect the game-play.

If you want this topic to remain in the Altar, I'd suggest posting how to improve things. (Otherwise topic will be moved to Lands of Axeoth as it deals mainly with impressions.)
