HOMM I & II : Medusas and Genies.
HOMM III: Enchanters (More powerfull version of mages, in power and spells), Gold & Diamond Golems (more expensive, but more endurant, fast and powerfull then normal golems)
HOMM IV: Gargantuan (A lot of HP, ranged, shoots twice, area attack), Dark champion (regenerate, fast, great skills, terror), Goblin knight (one of the best 3rd level creatures).
HOMM V : ??????

in homm I and II, it's definitely ghost. Geenies are powerful (halving a stack kicks ***), but with ghosts "feeding ability" you can have much of them in a short time.

Yes, ghosts are great creatures with the best potential for survival, but they are hard to find and recruit, are not present on many maps, and do throw the game of balance a bit.

Yes. This is a common disadvantage of some games: when you find something truly powerful, it unbalances the game. In one week it is possible to have over 200 ghosts. That's much.

The unbalancing must be the reason that there aren't many maps with ghosts or ghost dwelling on them...

Best and most useful neutral creature in HoMM 5 is Death Knight. You can see it in the avatarlist. Even not in H5 overview.

For other HoMM :
H1&2 : Nomads with high speed and great health compared with other level 3 cr. Also increases hero's speed on desert.
H3 : Sharpshooters. I think I don't have to explain anymore.
H4 : Yes, I Agree with ComradeX

Huh? Nomads? Well, you are the first, everyone would say ghosts or genies (maybe medusas)... world goes crazy. If you manage to get enough ghosts, you can scrap the rest of your army... Well, IMHO (very H) ghosts are the best.

Nomads? that's a real surprise! they are fast and do make you go faster in sand, but their skills are not that good.
They are not tougher then your average 3rd level creature.
I think there is no reason even to compare Ghost and Genies to Nomads, the advanteges of the 2 over the nomad (and most other creatures if talking of the Ghost) are clear, no need to argue over that.
About HOMM III, Sharpshooters are much like Enchanters, they are an upgrade of "regular" units (Enchanters are upgraded Mages and Monks, Sharpshooter are upgraded Elves and Archers) so I think these 2 are in the same category!
What did you mean by saying that the Death Knight is the best neutral unit of HOMM V? where can we see neutral creatures? I have only seen creatures in the town analyssis tables. Can you please post a link to the place where you have gotten the info about other, non town, creatures?

I don't say they are strongest. But useful! If my list above contains strongest level for each HoMM series, I'll say that the strongest in HoMM 3 is Azuries. But Sharpshooters are more useful and easier to get.

Sharpshooters better! Their non-ranged and non-obstacle penalty make their damage full to shoot enchanters and not vice versa.

Sorry, I'm missing the Phoenix. I don't know exactly about the neutral creature stats. But AFAIK, they are 4 Elementals, Phoenix, and Death Knight.

If you want to see their appearance, just see avatarlist in your 'modify profile form'.

When I said Enchanters and Sharpshooters are in the same category I did not mean to compare them or say who is stronger or more usefull. I just said that they have some things in common: they are both AB version creatures, both have good special abilities (magic for Enchanters, no range\obsticle penalty for Sharpshooters), and both are hero upgraded creatures from "regular" creatures: mages, monks, archers and elves.
As for HOMM I & II I don't think that Nomads are the best neutral creatures. IMO Ghosts are, followed by Genies, followed by Medusas. The Nomads speed is usefull, but for me they are not that usefull in general because they die to fast. On the other hand, Ghost have the unique "feed upon the dead" ability, Genies have good skills and the "split stack" ability, and Medusas have decent skills and "stone gaze" ability.
IMO these are better then the Nomad's speed and sand movement bonus.
Abou HOMM V, you said the Death Knight is best. Do you have any info on neutral creatures in the game? how can you tell the Death Knight is best if you only know of it's existance from the avatar list? (we don't know what neutral creatures will be in the final game).
I assume that the Phoenix will be the best of the neutrals we know of for now, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Now you can see it in the Heroes 5 info.
