Has anyone tried Age of Wonders 2?

Hi All,

While waiting for the expansion pack/AI improvements/multiplayer for Heroes 4, I was wondering if Age of Wonders 2 was worth a look. It looks like it has similar gameplay to heroes but it is not made by 3DO (it might not be buggy...maybe). If any heroes fans have played AOW2 can they please reply and talk about AOW2 gameplay - compared to HOMM3, etc.

Thanks,
RD.

Yes it's quite good.. but it's not for everyone. If you've played Master of Magic and enjoyed it, you should be at home with AOW2. If you're a HOMMer, you might not like it. It plays very differently to the HOMM series, and its not simple to get into. You have to have persistence and an attention span that lasts more than 5 minutes. But once you get into it, it's a charm. But I repeat, its not an easy game to learn, its very complicated at the beginning, but after a few matches it becomes second nature.

There are a couple of quirks with the game too, but nothing as major as HOMM4.

Thanks Jenova,

A couple of more questions wrt AOW2:

1. Is multiplayer over a LAN fun?
2. Is the AI any good?
3. How long does an average game last?
4. Quirks... I'm interested...

Thanks,
RD.

Age of Wonders 2 is absolutly worth a look! The gameplay has similarities to Heroes, but it is also different on many points (like magic and strategy).

AoW is getting great scores (9+/10) in the latest magazines and by the way there's a demo too.

From what I've seen (though I still need to play the game a lot more!) AOW2 seem to be a bit like a cross between Heroes 3 and Warlords 3.

In the game you start with your wizard - a hero who cannot die or be lost unless you lose the game completely (ie lose your last town with your wizard at the same time). Other heroes (creatures which may hold items, etc) offer to join you every now and then - like in Warlords 3 if you know that game. In gameplay you explore the map (one or two levels), research spells, upgrade your town, buy monsters. The resources are gold and mana.

In each town, one day's work only goes towards one target, and each target may take multiple days and may be a building or a creature. Targets are queued. Monsters can move by themselves across the map like in Warlords 3 and if they come across an item it can be transported back to town using mana.

There are way fewer creatures in this game compared to HOMM3. Each creature needs to be either summoned with a spell (which may take days to cast) or grown in a town (usually taking multiple days). Creatures are not stacked - each sprite repersents one creature/hero. There are boats to transport creatures over water but I have not yet noticed if you can fight at sea.

AOW2 seems is much more tactical in terms of diplomacy than H3.  The AI players can initiate diplomacy and may ask you to become allies with them. If you refuse you are at war with them. It is probably a bit more subtle than that but I need to play it more to find out. The interface takes a while to get used to but is not too bad at all. The battles are great fun with ranged units having better chances at close range, etc.

I like the queueing of buildings and creatures, as well as the way spells are learnt and cast.

I think AOW2 has great potential and this series could be a HEROES beater. Time will tell. At least they have put a decent effort in to may it relatively bug free. The multiplayer is good and you don't need an upgrade! Multiplayer can be either synchronous or step-wise. The synchronous mode works very well and is actually realistic. You see the enemy stacks moving around and you can start chasing them while they run away!!!

RD- I had a similar experience with game compared to Heroes3. You can fight at sea, but only with flying units or units that can swim. Boats cannot enter eachother such as in Heroes. There are indeed less units and structures than in Heroes3. it would have been cool to see more structures.

It seems that hero units are crucial in the campaign, but not that crucial in multiplayer, because heroes maybe are a little to weak at first level, and therefor die easily, but stacks of 3e level flying units rock combined with a hero that gots flying.

It seems that multiplayer is great in Age of wonders 2. Especially due to the simultaneous turns option you don't have to wait to long. And I had some serieus fun this weekend with a couple of friends. Even when not playing the game, we discussed strategies to kick our opponents! I have the experience that when playing a map with lots of players you need to make alliances with neighbours or else other opponents further away become stronger. Its vital to share spells and sometimes resources. But its also nice to betray people when the time is right!

AoW2

I've played AoW1 and AoW2 quite a bit. From my experience, I say AoW2 is a great game, and a lot of fun. There are 12 races to choose from, so even though the number of units from any one particular race may not seem impressive, when you look at all the creatures from all the races, there are quite a bit to choose from. Tons of fun, and the player's strategy really matters. The AI is good, and most will find it challenging even on the default "normal" difficulty. Higher than that will certainly give players of advanced skill a challenge. The heroes themselves fight and level up (as in HoMM4), and can become quite powerful.

I highly recommend AoW2 to anyone who likes turn-based strategy games. As a fan of the HoMM series, I like AoW2 almost as much as HoMM3, and more than HoMM4. Try it, and see what you think. There is a demo available for those who like to try before they buy.

Enjoy!
