Random Basics 101

Hi there.
I´m sure most of you already know how to play randoms, but I thought it would be a good idea to start some courses on how to play them. This one is about the basics of a random.

The objective in a random, is to play well, win, and have fun. We will focus here on how to play well and win the game.

1. Randoms compared to fixed.
Randoms usually have less resources, and you will find that a large part of the game is looking for the resources you need to get a good build.

2. Getting the build.
On 80% to 130%, it is best to build creatures first, maybe on 100% you can think about maybe town hall day 2, and on 130% you should build it. on 160% and 200% I like to go for the gold (town hall, city hall, then creatures) but others disagree. This of course depends on the map. On rich maps, get creatures, on poor maps, go for the gold.

3. Playing the map.
The most commonly used tactic is using shooters to fight slow units, and to get expert earth and mass slow. This is how to fight the big stuff and get the huge power. Rampart is a good town for this, and any other town that has nice shooters.

4. The power
The power on a random, unless someone rushes, is found in 4 places:
1. Dwellings
2. Loose scrolls and artifacts.
3. Pandoras boxes
4. Dragon utopias

Usually you take them in this order, and then when you think you have an advantage, you attack.

A good build and good stats and/or good spells are neccessary to take a dragon utopia, but Im sure you know about that already. If not, you can always take the dragon utopia course that will be held later this summer.

Basic expansion:
1. Get your wood and ore mines
Use scouts for this, unless there is a slight blocking monster. The wood mine is usually more important than the ore mine.
2. Follow the road to find more towns.
The road leads to other towns. Follow the road unless its heavily blocked. You will need the gold from the other towns in order to win.
3. Take any native dwellings in the area. The troop increase they give you might be all you need to win the fight. 1 gnoll can make a difference..

This is the way to start a random in a good way. Then you have to play the game well to win. More on this later.

Now go out there and practice your randoms!

Nah, i doubt it.  If your opponent is `just learning' these strategies, more often than not you will win.

None of those strategies are new and are commonly know to random players.

Also you are leaving out some of the `really good' strategies, obviously saving those up...

IF you have to use conflux (don´t use it, its a cheesy town) the smaller the map, the better to pick ciele, the larger the map, the better to pick grindan. If you´re looking for a might hero, Monere is pretty good, but any armourer or offence spec is better I think.

Upgrade sprites day 1 unless its a large resource crazy map, and go out. Keep them safe, keep them suit.. they die like flies. get firebirds ASAP and then upgrade them as soon as you can. They are the source of your cheesy power. Try to find armageddon, or the grail to put the cheese to the max. Grindan gets expert slow at level 5 unless u get a really good skill with him, so use his powers..

But

*DO NOT PLAY WITH CONFLUX*

It´s a sure sign that you´re either a n00b, a dishonorable player, or just alittle off..

Choose rampart, castle, or dungeon. These are the towns of random power. Rampart for the elves, castle for the angels and the good setup, dungeon for the portal of summoning and the Shak attack.

Remember:  Be in the game, but not *of* the game..

champions be ruels

angels are very hard to build-for me. Because I play only at %160. U usually do not get to build em before week3 unless U hit some naga banks and/or several 10 vamp. crypts.
champions are easier to build in week1. and they rock. U can build citadel too in week1 if you are carful enuf. However, getting 35 wood is the trick for champions in week1. and of course the free upgrade of stables.

portal:

it be rocks too... funny xp: I once had a trog and red drag. dwellng. and the basterd portal never gave me extra red

mana vortex is a killa too.

other than all these, jebus gave all already.

my advice for randoms:
dont have a life, coz you will need a lot of time to spend to restart...and even longer to get a decent game on a playable map.
hope you are the guy with the tons of cons or the L7 dwelling or the 2nd matching town with fort in.
hope you are the guy that finds earth tome or red orb.

thats it

Mad: thats why you dont take the sucky dwells
Andi: maybe its just me but whats the use of both having earth book and red orb?

I had a game recently where i cleared 4 topes (had shiva as main) and got the following relics: red orb, thunderhelmet, spellbinders *2, res boots, angel wings (no fly rule tho), lion shield and cel neclace (which i didnt use since i had courage pendant) and except all of that i also had recanters lol...

kinda tough choices to make when you are up against thorgrimm with better stats, off course i did the wrong one thinking opp would have no good power spells. But my speed 7 dends saved my butt that game

Those tree´s are not to be underestimated!

Sir Stiven, you mention before in some other thread Shakti's ability to clear cons very soon. Care to explain that a bit more in detail? What cons are you attacking, ones with 50 griffins or others as well? A little detailed strategy if you're willing. Thanks...

Nebuka, with shak as starting hero you should have between 130-160+ trogs day1 (2 starting stacks+ and one native in tavern which isnt lorelei)...upgrade those trogs and you will have speed 7 on them with shak and underground bonus. Griffs only have speed 6 which makes this possible. You can take 50cons day 1 but i think you can take 100 cons too.

COnservatories and Shakti.

Although I am not a professional at this.. and I normally will end week 1 with say 10 trogs and 2 or 3 angels

For a 50 griffon conservatory, yeah with speed 7 infernal trogs, underground, and shakti about lv3 or 4 hopefully sporting adv or exp offense this is no problem, and with some luck should render no loses. (No magic needed)

For 100 griffons things get a little trickier.. For 1 reason  100 griffons would not be a big deal. But as we know any con with 100+ girffons is guarded by a "throng" and if that throng is 150 or 200 things might go badly for you. So having said that..

A conservatory with 100 griffons that when right clicked says "horde of griffons, Lots of Royal Girffons" is what we are looking for, and those pesky royal griffons cause us a great deal of trouble. THey move first and will almost always ont he higher difficulty soak up the retaliation of your trog stack.. if your lv5 or less and carrying 120 odd torgs, chances are this will die or almsot die, but now your down to about 110 trogs.  IN this situation, after out maneuvering driggons and such, maybe using a few single stack trogs to take attacks, you should come out with about 30 torgs total lost, without any magic.

With magic. THese 100 griffons cons are a peice of cake, haste, slow, bless or any combination of these spells is all you need to get out of this battle losing only the initial trogs that the royal griffons attack round 1.

For example if a griffon stack of 20 has what hmmmm 25 health each? thats 500 health. a stack of shaktis 120 trogs does something like 220-680 dmg or something like that. WIth a simple bless spell that stack of trogs becomes a small atom bomb capable of killing most anything in a single blow.  With slow you can position yourself so that nothing can hit you, and then use the wait command you should not sustain any loses.

Week 1 vs 150 griffons..

thats a tough one... and not one I'd prolly even attempt unless a few things all came together..

I have exp earth magic and slow.  a stack of no less than 140 Infernal Trogs.  A bless spell and even possibly haste. Also shakti will have to be at least lv6 or 7 and have att score of no less than 5.
Oh and NO royal griffons in the conservatory.

If these conditions would all be met, I think you could attack and win fairly easily without loss.

200 Griffons weeek1

Forget it your dreaming!

------------------------------

CAUTION: These strategies WILL not work with other heroes, SHakti imbues his trogs with a +1 speed bonus
Also these Calaculations are only for underground terrain.  Which donates another +1 speed to all dungeon troops.  And of COurse the infernal trog must be used, yes thats the upgraded version.

Wow i didnt know shak and con taking were a science

One thing i like to do when taking cons first week is to bring me some hags as bate. That way those griffins wont reach your important trogs for an extra round or something. trogs also works as bate but i like the 10 speed hags better since sometimes the griffs attacks them instead of your main trog stack too.
