Genaology

Just for free time (and to find holes in the sources of creatures) I've made this list. Would you please add what you can? People might be familiar with it, if only they visit the Round table Forums...
Heaven Town:
-Peasant, squire, crossbowman, crusader, monk, ballista, pikeman and Champion: Real Life
-Angel: Christian 'Mythology', messengers from the Christian God

Nature town:
-Wolf: Real Life, but if he was more powerfull, I'd say he coms from Scandinavia
-Sprite: Etymology dating back to the latin Spiritus, or 'life breath', 'spirit', 'soul', and a thousand of other meanings. European folklore
-Elf: Norse/ maybe celtic too, adapted by Tolkien
-leprechaun: Irish
-White Tiger:real life-a bit reworked, and a Chinese Symbol
-Satyr:Greec, followers of Dionysus
-Elementals: all made from anient greece Philosophy, the first element was earth/... according to the nature philosophists. Take this, and give it a representation, and you have elementals...
-Unicorn:Irish myths
-Phoenix: Greece (maybe Egyptian) myths. Universal mythological being and discussed in the creature cards (see Celestial Heavens)
-Waspwort: The carnivorous plant has always been one of human's fear. And you always have those few plants that eat insects...
-Mantis: Chinese, the 'large bug' has always been a human fear
-Fairy dragon: the Dragon, but a bit reworked. Previously encountered in Dungeons and Dragonds...

Chaos Town:
-Bandits: real life
-orc: Spirits that lived in forests, looked like a crossbreed of some vile animal and a human, gross and hated by humans. Made famous by Tolkien
-Pirate: Real Life
-Troglodyte: Just a name for early human beings
-Evil Eye: special interpretation of a curse
-Medusa: Greec Myths, 1 of the 3 gorgons, killed by Perseus
-Minotaur: Greec Myths, habitant of the Labyrinth, and son of 'a' bull and Minos's (the king of Crete) wife, a result of Aphrodite's boredom, the name means Minos' monster
-Troll: Norse Myths
-Efreet:Middle Eastern
-Nightmare: quite simple,2 joined words:night(darkness is associated with evil) and mare(a horse) and you get nightmare, seemingly. Maybe to european folklore? Add a question mark here please...
-Hydra: Greec myths, habitant of the swamp in Lerna, killed by Heracles
-Black Dragon: dragons are a universal appearence, they do not appear in the pre-colombian civilizations (they have flying snakes)

Necropolis:
-Imps: The general workhorse in most hell-like places, in Estonian mythology, also known as Pisuhänd,roughly translated, that means 'fire tail',an evil servant for greedy ppl or the devil himself
-Skeletons: universal human fear.
-Zombies: voodoo culture, people filled with narcotics who have no sense of existance anymore.
-Cerberus: Greecs, abducted by Heracles,
-Ghost: universal human fear/ Arcane
-Gargoyle: Ornamental Christian Beings
-Mummy: Egyptians and modern writers, preserved egyptian (inca) body
-Vampire: European/American Writers, actually from old mythology, originates from the Black Sea regions, the original vampires were not bloodsucking creatures but something that could draw life out of another human, also the teeth came later, probably modern literature, the fact that they could be killed with silver came after colonizing the new world, simply a hoax of the silver merchants to sell their huge stocks of silver. Seemingly also encountered in Chinese mythology...
-Venom Spawn: Looks like 'attack from Mars, but someone must know it.
-ice demon: Norse mythology had fire and ice demons and such
-bone dragon: a creation of the ppl that made the game, probably
-Devils: Bible, the evil in person

Academy:
-Dwarf: Norse, the smiths
-Halfling: Tolkien
-Gold Golem:Jewish Mythology
-Magi: any time, any place, men with magical powers
-Genie: Middle Eastern cultures, summoned via a lamp
-naga: Indian, actually were both male and female, not only female,a snakelike creature,in the mythology they weren't something like a human with many hands, that's a combination of Krishna and the naga
-Titan: there were 12 of them, children of Uranos(the sky) and Gaia(earth),banished to the underground actually by their own father Uranos, who didn't want them making a mess of the land, the youngest of them,Kronos, killed their father, later his own son,Zeus killed him and the other titans with the help of the evil cyclops,in real mythology, they did not use lightning, the cyclops did!
-Dragon Golem: self-made

Stronghold:
-Berserker: in fact real life!ppl that think they are animals and go around breaking things and killing other ppl, ancient chronicles claim that sometimes whole villages of ppl in Russia and Scandinavia went berzerk, often also used in the military: drug them without their knowledge, tell them the enemy has done somethin bad, and your soldiers will fight that hard they won't fall back when faced with a wound or so
-Centaur: ol' greecs, amost-always drunk, not so civilised. Half-men, half horse... The least refined phrieses on the Acropolis (in case you visit the Brittish Museum) are those of the centaurs, the centauromachy. Take note there are smart centaurs. Herakles got lessons from one, as did other heroes
-harpy:harpys stole treasures, they were ugly, gross, disgusting, dwelled in caves or nests and annoyed everyone that could be annoyed. Jason killed a few on his way to the golden Fleece
-nomad: Asian ppls, hunns, mongols and such, hostile tribes, had to move around very often to find better lands for the cattle
-Mermaid: sailor superstition, and the homm mermaid has some characteristics of the greec siren
-cyclops: brothers of the titans, knew the skill of forging lightning bolts,in real mythology cyclops, not titans used lightning!helped Zeus to defeat Rhae,Kronos and their brothers and sisters/ There are different types of cyclopses. This one is the mythological one. The epic one is the one Odysseus encountered on his voyage to ithaka. They are shepards, in general, and not really civilized...
-Ogre Magi: self-made after too much drinks. Or self-made by Gungeons and Dragons fans... adapted from the normal ogre- whatever it is?
-Behemoth: Jewish Mythology
-Thunderbird:Native american myth
-Sea Monster: sailor superstition.
Altough there are many holes to fill, it is clear the Norse, the celt, the far eastern and the Native american mythology can be a bit more present.

A few small corrections (great list, btw):

- I am not sure of the exact origin of the fairy dragon, but it definatly appeared before HMM as it is included in the AD&D monster manual.

- The vampires originate from Romanian, Transilvanian and Russian stories, but also exist in the chinese culture in a slightly different form.

- The Mermaid is probobly an adaption of the greek siren.

- Ogre Magi: just as the fairy dragon, it also appears in the AD&D manual.

a few tweaks...

Preserve:
-Sprite: european folklore...
-Elf: Celtic, adapted by Tolkien
-Elementals: generic fantasy I'd say... no elementals in Greek mythology/philosophy (what you said is another thing)
-Phoenix: Greece (maybe Egyptian) myths. Egyptian i'd say... with it's Greek name
-Waspwort: real life... sort of

Chaos Town:
-Bandits: real life
-Orcs: european folklore, adapted by Tolkien (NOT the HoMM4 ones though)
-Medusa: Greek Myths, 3 sisters, the mortal one named Gorgo, killed by Perseus
-Minotaur: Greek Myths, habitant of the Labyrinth, and son of 'a' bull and Minos's (the king of Crete) wife, means "Minos's bull"
-Nightmares: european folklore

Necropolis:
-Bone Dragon: NWC's or 3DO's idea of a death oriented dragon...

Academy:
-Magi: human history in general, men with magical powers

Stronghold:
-Centaur: my ancestors... first Greeks to use horses
-Ogre Magi: adaptation of the generic ogre (european folklore I guess)

Manticore/Scorpicore:

although Manticore appeared in Greek myths, it originally came from the Persians (some say they took it from India)

the Scorpicore is AFAIK, just a name for the HoMM3 upgraded Manticore... therefore, not part of any ancient mythology...

Manticore

Here's what i've found:

"The Manticore was a creature with the torso of a lion, the hindquarters of a scorpion and a head with human resemblance. It was typically blamed for the mysterious dissapearance of a person, since it was well known that it fed only on human flesh and ate even the clothing and possessions of its victim. While there are no tales that describe one, it was generally considered to have three rows of razor-sharp teeth and its scorpion like tail allowed it to fire poisonous darts. When a villager has completely disappeared, this is considered proof of the presence of a manticore. "
