Heroes™ IV Mapmakers' Contest

Starting September 15, 2002, the Might and Magic® Guild will begin accepting entries for the Heroes of Might and Magic® IV Mapmakers' Contest. The 20 best single-scenario maps, and the 10 best multiplayer maps, as selected by New World Computing staff members, will be included in the second expansion edition of Heroes IV, and the creators' names will be included in the game credits. The following are some basic guidelines for map submission:

1. Small, Medium and Large maps only.
2. Story for the map to be presented in 300 words or less. This means that the event text in the map cannot exceed 300 words.
3. Allied (multiplayer) maps are acceptable.
4. Maps will be judged on passability, appearance, balance and story.
5. Winning maps will be reviewed and “beautified” by artists at New World Computing.

So fire up that map editor and get started! We will be providing additional information in September on how to submit entries, so be sure to check back to the site. Please do not send maps to mmguild@3do.com as they will not be accepted and we will not be responsible for their loss.

HAHA, selling other people's work, and a second expansion. Yep, that's the 3DO we've always known.

Seriously, I'm not paying for stuff I can get for free on the net. The EULA says you can't sell your maps for money, but apparently there's an exception if the money goes into 3DO's pockets.. The rest of the new features in the second expansion I can already guess what they are.

You are way too negative about this.

I mean. It's an oppurtunity to those who want to get their name mentioned in the game credits.

It will mean that those who buy the second expansion will get a number of good quality maps shipped with it. (Which is a blessing since I don't think the H4 Maps were all that good. Do remember that most people do not hunt for good Maps on-line, and even if they do it's not always evident which maps are good and which are a waste of your time.)

For those who are not map makers or do not want their name mentioned in the game credits it means very little. No need to rack down on 3DO for things that don't affect you, or for an oppurtunity offered to others.

No need to blame 3DO for giving mapmakers a chance to contribute to "a part" of an expansion contents.

It shouldn't affect the rest of the expansion much, and the effect may very well be positive because it gives a reason for the designers to produce fewer maps and do other more needed features instead. (But they probably will produce their own additional maps anyway.)

I thought it was kind of cool TBH.
Someone's gotta make the map's right? Why not us?
The fact that it's included in marketed software dosn't mean much.

I'm saying it's not a bad idea.
They're probably thinking,
"Hi, we're looking for great map's from different creative HOMM players. We think it would be bennificial to all (you and me) to get "good map's" from a world wide pool of intellegence.

What do you want us to do, put an add in the paper?"

Happy map making (for those who broke down and got use to the map editor lol)

--edit
Also.. Before anyone starts banging on more expansion's in HOMM4, look at how many 3 had

It's more of 3do thinking

"Let's fire our current employes, not pay them salaries and get the work for free."

They won't move their little fingers and they still want the money. It's not a bad idea. It's just a very cheap trick.

I mostly agree it will be good for all of us: map makers & customers. A little competition will force people to create wonderful maps or to improve near to perfection those yet made.

However there will be a serious problem with scenarios!

Many maps I downloaded have scenarios far from the HoMM world…and even incompatible.

The better example: Lord of the Ring… That map has no chance to be in the Expansion. I know: it’s an XL & it doesn’t fit.... But what a pity!
And it would be worth to just change the scenario with a kind of “Crag Hack destroys Evil with the help of his nice friends’ hobbits & elves”.

Most of the greatest maps we can find on the net are in the same case. How would they “review” them??? I’m curious to have deeper explanations about it.

Generally speaking, don't most expansions have about 30 single maps?  So if most of the single maps are made by fans, yeah probably better maps.  I like that idea, and I think I would be more likely to buy an expansion that was done this way.  But for crying out loud, they could at least give the winners a free copy of the expansion!  Or are they worried about losing those 30 sales?

Of course most people would want it if their map was in it.  And not like it would really cost 3DO that much.  I also hope Djive is right when she said it would give them more time to work on features (can you say random map generator?) if they had to spend less time on making maps.

Well, maybe I am overreacting.  Maybe when the further details are mentioned, we will find out that the intention all along was to also include a free copy of the expansion to winners.  And maybe 3DO actually thought of this idea on their own!

Um, actually, I've spoken with a person from New World, and they told me that the winners will, in fact, recieve a free copy of the Expansion.

So, with all three of those perks, I certainly don't think that 3DO's really getting free labor--and if I'm a winner, I'll certainly feel compensated

Yep

Yep, have to be a guild member. So you have to pay for doing work for 3DO. That and the 300 word limit is what means the maps I've been working on would never be submitted. I mean, 300 total words in events? That's nothing.

I agree that 300 words is very short - I probably have 300 words in one event sometimes.

What I *really* want to know about this contest is what the terms and conditions are.  Some people have expressed cynicism regarding the purpose of the contest - well, the terms and conditions may reveal much of that.  (Any restrictions on what the mapmaker can do with their own map, once submitted or selected, imply the cynicism is justified ... by contrast, what was *right* about HOMM2 Gold's extra maps was that they were already available to the net community, and the bundling brought those maps to many gamers who would not go seeking fansites.)

I'd like to hear things like when 3D0 will *stop* accepting maps, too.  It takes a long time to make and test one of the best maps - (Argh!  300 words!) - while many maps already made will fit the requirements, as it stands mapmakers won't know how long they have to finish their maps.
