That's an interesting comparision between Napoleon and Hitler.  I'd actually never thought of it before... very interesting indeed.

Well I do a lot of wargaming so comparisons between generals are quite common as are what if situations.(of course hitler was no general, but you know what I mean). That's largely where I get my knowledge of that period from as I have studied it a fair bit to know the strategy of the war.

I'm sure someone would say that's pure coincidence, but to hitler, a leader obsessed with such things as astrology, you would think he would have taken heed. Russia is/was far too powerfull and large to be wholly defeated by a country the size of Germany or France. The best either Hitler or Napoleon could manage was to smash the Russian army and hope they would come to a negotiated peace deal. Unfortunately both got tied down with their own petty ideals and as you said ego and pride they failed to see that the bigger picture was to smash the country and it's ability to defeat you, not to occupy every last inch of it.

True, but then again when you look at the 3 main Axis powers, it's not like Germany would have gotten much help.  If Italy spreads out its forces, it becomes vulnerable to Allied attacks VIA North Africa.  And there was no way in hell that Japan would have been able to help; they were just too far away.  So the Germans had to occupy key Russian cities, with Moscow being the primary goal.  But, the Germans just had to conquer every town they came near, which led to supply exhaustion, as well as damaging of troop morale and health.

That is precisely why an invasion of Russia is senseless to say the least. Hitler and Napoleon were at the height of their power when they invaded Russia, but both lost their power as an almost direct result of the invasion. Neither truly defeated the Russian army to such an extent of it being impossible for the russians to defend themselves. Hitler invaded at the best time he could, but to remain in power he should have never invaded at all. Russia and Germany were on reasnobaly friendly terms prior to 1941, with large trade systems and co-operation between the 2 at a high. Like Napoleon before him who also had no real need to fight Russia Hitler seemed to have fought the Russians on the spurious grounds of Lebensraum and simply because he could not abide the fact that there was a nation sitting so close that they could not defeat.

Had either of them left Russia be for the period they were in power then the Western World would have had a nightmare time defeating such forces as both could put together. The fact is that both threw away their power and control of Europe in a mad attempt to defeat yet one more country. For both it proved shall we say a Bridge Too Far

Did you know that when you mix up the letters of A. Hitler, you get "the liar"? It was the brits that found that AFAIK. And he was vegetarian, too!

The reason that not many people here are aware of the USSR's part in winning the war is because most of them learned history from American sources and it's obvious that those sources make the US seem like the country that played the most important part in the war. But it's not just the US - all the countries do the same thing. For example, if you read a Canadian history textbook you can almost believe that Canada was the most important nation in WWII! And in Russia they believe that the US did not play a significant role at all and the war would have been better without it. But you can't do anything about it because history will always be biased and getting the truth is very hard.

Yes that is the point, so whenever I read about history I like to read from all viewpoints. For example the battle of Waterloo, mainly fought by France, Britain, Holland and Prussia, so I have read british, german and French accounts of the battle (i've never seen dutch accounts). They all differ wildly on central points.

Most people aren't going to get far in life by just getting information from a singular, possibly biased source.  If I want to read up on a subject like WW2, I'll read several different books, encyclopedias, and internet sites about it to get a good feel of what the best information is.
