HMM V?!

Just reading an article in games magazine....very short article...here is the translation:

"Acoulpe of days ago, 3DO oficially announced the next episodein the TBS series Heroes of MIght and Magic. Heroes V will come out in the winter of 2003. Unfortunately, the producer didn't give any more details on the game. At the same pres conference it was announced the first add-on for Heroes IV, the date being set for march 2003"

That's the whole story....i'm gonna mail them for more details, but i thought i'd tell you about it...Oh, well, i'll be back with more details ASAP

I'm surprised no one's commented on this yet.

I think you messed up with the Expansion date, though--it's September 25. The Second Expansion is set for March 2002, along with a third Expansion sometime after that, and then Heroes V in December 2003.

*Dragon cackles with glee*

What magazine is it, by the way?

That new heroze should come with full 3d graphics, by using Latest Doom 3 graphics engine , with pixel-stencil-shadows and bumpmapping. Every hero should be made of ~3000 polygons at least, artifacts about 500 or so.. That would be nice to see creatures moving in battlefield by using skeletal animation technology

That would be nice when you notice that you will need a much better computer that you have now to run it(my case and a lot of other guys) and at least at GeForce 4 to process so many poligons at the same time...

I am tempted to call you graphic junkies some very unseemly things...

Do you think HOMMII was rated best strategy game of the year (and EVER!!!!!) because of splendid graphics? Are you slow???? Gameplay and atmosphere's all that matters. Give me Heroes 5 with Heroes 2 graphic and music, and I'll lick your latex suit all the way up to the groin (yuck! what am I writing here?!?).

Think well

3D graphics from 3DO

I don't think H4 needs FULLY 3D graphics & animation. Look here: Heroes IV was released in new graphic system but withouth multiplayer support. They didn't have time. But note that this graphic system isn't so far from the previous as from the real 3d. If 3DO decides to publish a game in full 3D then I'm afraid we'll get the main menu in original release; the first and second patches will solve he memory problem and in 5th patch we will finally receive a couple of single missions to play. First campaign will be released in the second expansion set.

during next some years 99% games will have 3d support. SO i hope 3do is going to licenze DOOM ]|[ engine for heroze to make this game spreeeaaad all over the world! Heroze IV had nice cute graphics, but it isnt nice for me, it looks kidish, i found herozeIII has much better graphics and animations! IMHO 3do guys was realy tired last year . (i wouldnt speak about AI & bugs, cuz it would be flame)

I don't think Heroes V needs to be all 3D. 3D graphics just aren't meant for strategy games--especially turn-based ones. While I do think that the 3D rendering for the art in Heroes IV was a good change, true 3D graphics, to tell you the truth, are rather sloppy. They're always too pixelish--especially when you get too close to something; you can see the objects individual pixels.

Also, most 3D graphics aren't even true 3D...you may have a 3D box that's supposed to be a building, but all of the individual doors and windows are simply flat and painted onto the side--it's only in the most advanced shooter games(which I have a whole separate tirade that I can go on, but won't in this post) that you actually have 3D graphics that are truly three-dimensional.

Furthermore, in the long run, gameplay is much more important than graphics--I agree with DonGio.

In the next couple of years you will be able to put on special eyeglasses, take a virtual sword and fight the enemies in 3d reality. But that would be another game entirely...

For the HOMM series, 3D would have better been left alone.
Here are some hopes that I have.
Hopefully HOMM5, when it (hopefully) comes out, will have nice and crisp 2D graphics and a gameplay at least on the level of HOMM3.
Hopefully the heroes go back to the incorporeal state and become less of a creature, more of a hero.
Hopefully the combat returns to the side-view of at least they implement the isometric view right. Changing of perspective was supposed to increase the battlefield, but guess what - it didn't.
Hopefully the creatures are larger sized on the battlefield. What's the use of good graphics if you cannot see the details? At least the size of HOMM3.
Hopefully the heroes get specialties and you get to learn them by heart once again
Hopefully the adventure map looks more like a forest/mountain/wasteland/lava waste again instead of the table with toys on it (that it is in HOMM4).
There is much more, but the main thing I hope that for HOMM5, 3do listens to their customers and spends the time and money necessary to develop a good game like some other companies *cough*Blizzard*cough do. That will assure money and glory well earned. Because the game can be a blockbuster and stay that way for many years. HOMM4 is not such a game.

As for your question. If heroes 5 builds on heroes 4 by reusing most of the animations (possibly improving some of them) and uses same concepts on many other things, then the time schedule is viable. You will on the other hand not be able to do a new game with new animations in the stated time period (6 months), so waht the time-table tells us is that a lot of things will be reused between H4 and H5.

Also the time period is between the last Expansion for Heroes 4 and Heroes 5. The time between Heroes 4 and heroes 5 is about 1.5 years.

If NWC spends the half year between H4 and H5 to improve game-play and resuse most of the mechanisms in H4 (of course with some reshuffling of spells, skills and creatures, but using the same basic ideas), then there is some hope that H5 will become everything we hoped H4 to be.

Anyway, I would be much more happy with buying a H5 with new improved game-play than the alternatives which they could offer like:

- Expansions with new Maps only.
- Expansions with only a few new features and the same game-play.

Seen from that perspective, I'd say that the right decision has been made.

I can't see 3DO/NWC include improvements to AI or game-play in the expansion. An expansion adds things, it doesn't change things. Patches can improve things, but it's not likely to affect some mechanisms.
